Other Information
CommentsOnly a few points separate me and the cut-off for the V.I.P. Room, so for my final song for the regular competition, I am stepping “No Hagas El Indio, Haz El Cherokee” by “Cherry Coke”, which qualifies by using skin drums at 0:48-1:00 and chimes at the end. I do have a backup entry just in case this song doesn’t qualify, but I checked with TonyAkita, and he gave me the checkmark for this song.

Cherry Coke is made by producer Jorge Cubino Bermejo, who actually first started as a singer under the name “David Lyme”. After discovering Italo-Disco by accident after singing opera for a few years, he was signed to Max Music and released his first song “Bambina” in 1985. (check it up as well as other songs from David Lyme for some old-school Italo-Disco). The release was so successful, he would release many more tracks afterward, as well as 2 albums. While being popular across Europe, he would be most popular in Japan and the Philippines (he even performed in a Korean TV show). His style at the time was described as "Sabadell sound", a variant of the Italo-Disco sound. In 1990, he would leave Max Music for rival at the time “Blanco Y Negro” where "Perestroika" performed less than his other singles, which resulted in the end for his singing career, but he was far from done from music.

Around 1995, the Makina genre was booming all across Spain. At this time, very few singles were actually released in the country, and only Dance Maxi-Singles sold well. As such, Jorge in a collaboration with Coca-Cola produced “No Hagas El Indio, Haz El Cherokee” for both Cherry Coke commercials for the revamped image at the time, and as a single. This is a 160bpm Makina track with Indian chants, chimes, skin drums, and a juicy melody that captivated the hearts of the Spanish people. This song reached #2 in Spain, being blocked off by the debuting “Scream by Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson”, and ended up charting for 9 weeks in the Spanish Top 20. This let to the song later being released into other countries like Italy, Mexico, and the German-speaking countries (some packaging say that this reached #1 in Spain, maybe in terms of sales) , even charting for a week in the Austria Top 40 at #40 despite not having a known music video.

After this release, Jorge tried to pull lightning from a bottle once again with the Cherry concept “Cherokee People by Indian Cherry” and with the soda pop stick “Beba Sprite as part of Drink Team” the following year. Only a collaboration with Lollypop brand “Chupa Chups” would he score his final hit to my knowledge with “Banzai” (#19 for a week in 1996 Spanish Top 20). While he still produced music for a couple more years, westerners may remember him for writing and producing “Move Your Dead Bones” as “Dr. Reanimator”.

The legacy of “No Hagas El Indio, Haz El Cherokee” however still remains to this day in Spain. Even in 2021, Coca-Cola still promotes this song in their commercials for Cherry Coke. Though this song is primarily only known in Spain, I hope to spread the world of Makina for the newer generation with this song. If an anime would promote Cherry Coke, I wish that this song would be the song that would be used for the commercial. Now who would be a good character to associate with this song?

Shoutout to Kekkle for using my suggested song “Johnny Techno Ska by Paco Pil”, a banjo-filled Makina track that reached #1 for 4 weeks in Spain the previous year in 1994.

If I don't make it into the V.I.P. Room in the upcoming weeks, I just want to say thank you to everyone who has participated in the 2021 ZIv Summer Contest. I'm glad that this year's Summer Contest had a lot less drama than last years, and I hope that we can continue up this pace for years to come. Whether this is the end of the road for me or not, thank you for your participation in this contest and for the feedback that people have given me throughout this contest.

Update: Fixed a video error with the song.
