ZIV Simfile League Week 1
Disclaimer: I won't be getting too overly specific for criticisms unless the problem is a really specific section. This is my general thoughts on each file, just remember I'm not the be all end all for making and critiquing charts, and it's perfectly fine to disagree with what I write for your or anyone else's file. I'm gonna try and be honest since I want everyone to improve, nothing personnel kid. Also this is my personal kinda stream of conscience so I apologize if I sound like a crazy person at times.
——————————
#1 hypnoticmarten77 VS #3 Gameoson
Forgetting Machine:
Overall solid file, great execution with no really noticeable errors. While the 16th note streams in the beginning were consistent step-wise, sometimes it felt like it didn’t match up with the music as well as it could.
Cosmic Wonder Revolution:
Really fun to play, lot’s of nice patterns. Near the end, foot placement in the crossover section seemed a little ambiguous (i.e. going from a left-right jump into a crossover), as well as the very controversial decision to end facing backwards, unless I’m seeing things incorrectly.
My choice: Cosmic Wonder Revolution. Felt slightly more polished and had more ambitious patterns overall. Though there wasn’t really anything wrong with either file. This definitely earned the ‘match of the week’ title.
——————————
CuzcoBlocko VS #5 FoRCeDNaTuRe
GIRIGIRI DADDY:
There are a lot of crossovers, which is not inherently bad, but in combination with the jack and step jumps especially at that speed means it’s much more challenging to resolve/step properly. Other awkward patterns I would say push the difficulty a little too much. However there were some other patterns as well as bursts using the 32nd notes that I felt hit the spot in terms of rhythm.
Unfortunately your opponent doesn’t have a file for this week so it would seem you’re off the hook.
——————————
Oni-91 VS K-Step
My Lucky Day:
Could use more consistency with patterns, things like placement of jumps or foot placement (like LR-RL vs LR-LR on the syncopated beats). Felt like there was a lack of a defined rhythm throughout which makes it easier to get thrown off while playing.
Klamstrakur:
The patterns, mainly some of the 16th notes seem over-charted and don’t follow the beat of the music. I also felt the mines were completely unnecessary, as well as the fact that they throw the rest of the pattern out of wack as far as foot placement goes. Some of the attempts to step over that man’s vocals fell flat, especially when they are freeze arrows which can hide the quantization on non ITG skins.
My choice: My Lucky Day. Despite its flaws, I believe it held up better than the other file in terms of playability.
——————————
Mr. Music VS #9 Nezemarth
Hydra: Definite overuse of jumps, mainly the many 8th note jump streams, doesn’t flow well at that tempo. By contrast, I enjoyed the 16th note streams a lot. Plenty of fun patterns with solid execution.
Too Much Christmas:
Chart was off sync (normally not an issue since I know everyone’s might be set a little different but for me this was extremely noticeable). Nothing too bad with the patterns overall except for the jumps which seem out of place, especially some jumps on the eighth notes and jumps requiring you to move both feet before and after.
My choice: Hydra. Better overall composition.
——————————
#8 DigitalBasic VS Braeden47
Bootleg Fireworks:
(God, I listened to this song all the time in high school). Pasting and mirroring patterns isn’t always a bad thing, in fact sometimes it’s the right thing to do, but for slower patterns like the long freeze arrow sections it’s slightly more noticeable. Many sections such as that and the last part of the drop could have been more fleshed out with some more arrows to go along with the backbeat of the song. Felt more like a 12 rather than 13.
Blackout:
There was a huge problem with consistency throughout the file. I personally could’ve done without the 15 or 18 charts. As the song progresses the notes don’t seem to ever stick to one pattern, even though the music is generally more repetitive. Even the little blackout effect, which I did enjoy, used different timings in regards to the stop/slow down each time it was used.
My choice: Bootleg Fireworks. I believe this chart had a clearer direction and better overall execution.
——————————
brunobg24 VS #7 hooky
Opening from Kid Icarus Uprising:
I’d say the song choice here let you explore plenty of different rhythms. Nice patterns throughout, I could only catch one misplaced arrow during one of the triplet runs. Good effort at handling the tiny slow down at the very end. Nice file overall.
Put ‘Em High:
At the beginning, you could simply switch left and right instead of mirroring to keep the pattern more consistent. Otherwise it does look a bit copy and pasted. Solid patterns throughout otherwise, save for maybe a few doublesteps. 16th notes near the end do seem over charted, but they flow pretty well and were fun to hit.
My choice: Kid Icarus Uprising. Neither file was bad, but I think this song went a bit higher in terms of creativity and enjoyment.
——————————
#4 VanEden VS #10 vonafora
Wowie Zowie:
Alright, I won’t lay into this file too hard since I am your opponent this week, but there were a few things that need to be brought up. I felt there needed to be more variety, as many sections of the chart were copied and pasted as is (i.e. without mirroring or changing up any arrows). Also the second stop/speed up section at 512 comes in too fast to react too. I actually enjoyed the gallops during the drop, they were unique and went well with the rhythm. Unfortunately the most serious issue is the second to last note, due to what I can only assume was a mistake while moving notes up or down, is actually two jumps one 192nd apart, meaning it will always result in a miss.
——————————
#6 talkion VS Sigrev2
Milky Way Galaxy:
Some of the step jumps during the buildups are questionable (a la Unreal). The speed gimmicks worked really well, however you can also manually specify the tempo to 175 to correct overcompensation for anyone (me) using M mod, since the first time I played through it was twice as slow seeing as the game expected the max speed of 350bpm. (This is literally the most nitpicky thing I could ever come up with). Great patterns throughout, awesome file!
But of course in the end it doesn’t even matter since your opponent does not have a file this week. You’ll get em next time.
——————————
TonyAkita VS #2 Pandemonium X
Audio Attack:
Some unique rhythms made it fun to play, save for a few instances where it didn’t feel like it aligned with the music as well as it could. The gradual slowdown was a bit rough around the edges, but returned to normal without any mistakes. Not bad overall.
The First Step:
A few weird patterns near the beginning seemed like unintentional double steps. Good rhythms throughout, although arrow placement could’ve used a bit more consistency. One rhythm during the second drop had a slightly incorrect rhythm. Otherwise very enjoyable.
My choice: Audio Attack. This was an extremely difficult decision, but this file edged ahead just a bit.
——————————
djVERTICAI VS HealingDMax300
YUMETSUTSU:
Triplets may have been more in sync with the rhythm than 16th notes. Composition wise this file was put together extremely well, but maybe more complex patterns would’ve fit better with the song. It’s not bad in any sense, but it would’ve been nice to expand and see more of what you already had, which I guess you could say is a good thing.
Perverse Weapon:
Very exciting chart, probably one of the most fun to play this week, but there is a lot of time spent crossed over, combined with the 16th note streams in my opinion pushes it as a 16. There were some missed rhythms during the solos, as well as a noticeable error during the triplet drum fill. One of the mine foot switches wasn’t as clear as the other ones, but that could be my personal taste.
My choice: YUMETSUTSU. While both were great to play, this file from a technical standpoint outpaces the other.
——————————
mikeintyo VS SomethingRandom VS ohaiimian
Shakunetsu Pt. 2:
Consistency was a big issue for this file. The patterns overall were very hit or miss, and the little stutter stops could have been left out. I don’t like to throw around the d-word very often, but there were a lot of doublesteps which for an 18 takes away from the playability of the song.
Kiss Me Kiss Me Babe:
The notes didn’t match the rhythm up well as they could during the 16th note runs, and could’ve been more diverse in the beginning instead of just drills, which is remedied near the end. Nothing stands out on either extreme in terms of quality, but some patterns in the verse do have a nice feel to them.
Look At Her Now:
Selena Gomez, totally in control of me? Yes. Let me tell you why. Uh, anyway this should certainly be half the bpm, admittedly it doesn’t really change anything except for the colors. Overall consistency is on point, but the choice of patterns (jump streams and some step jumps during the end) are a little questionable.
My choice: Look At Her Now. Again, consistency in the patterns and solid execution put this file ahead of the others.

Another bad week to work on things because of overtime (thanks, holiday season) but I squeezed something out. Hopefully this week I can actively work on something throughout the week and not be exhausted rather than have to get something out the last minute.

Week 2 - VS FoRCeDNaTuRe
5 / 10 / 13 / 17
Been wanting to release this one for a while. I think this'll be the hardest chart this round?
Also would like to say thank you to VanEden for providing detailed feedback to everyone's file. I plan to post feedback for the files as well soon; I just didn't have the time to write it while I was voting this week.
