Comments | you know that joke character that suddenly shows up in a really hard rhythm game chart to become a boss? yeaa ,,. so. i hate DDR 19s. they usually do some combination of the following that really annoys me: - really sudden awkward earth power: tell jumps (hou), jump spam (endy, lach) - half speed gimmicks that suck to play (OtP, valk) - pitch irrelevant bursts (max 360, egoism) - ambiguous tech (prev) - streaming above 260 on DDR pad hardware (BtF, SfV) - boring footspeed check (volaquas, this one's like... a minimal offender though) that's not to be a complete spoilsport about their state in the game. there are definitely some elements that i like: - volaquas plays reasonably fair throughout its' 993 note runtime - hou is like, pretty A-tier as far as DDR boss songs go. memorable speed changes (plus the introduction of Constant), fun callbacks within the song itself - every single 19 is pretty memorable for its' own reasons (even if there's only 11 of them) so if i'm gonna write a 19 for a ziv contest, i'd like it to do the following: - not just be a simple footspeed check, that's too basic c'mon - play fair. give ample room to regain lifebar but also know when to turn up the heat and really force the player to lock in - be memorable and distinct from existing 19s. take full advantage of the stepmania medium to give undeniable 'boss song energy' - lots of one-off patterns to favor chart study - maybe make a reference or two. wink wink nudge nudge. so, i went with a super high tech approach. no brackets except a few cheatable ones to save energy. it's my choice to revel in the excess of what a 19 should be. don't worry, i won't be mad if you don't play the 19 (although i highly suggest you rate mod it to 0.7x). if you just want to look at it in a chart-editing software of your choice, i included little director's notes to justify every weird decision i made. plus, there's a wide spread of lowers for all skill levels to enjoy! mods scale roughly to difficulty so the worst of it won't appear in the 9-16. THANK YOU FOR { WATCHING IN AV } also thank you to sorae/tetaes/exsch for writing such good code for me to rip mega shout-out scrypts for debugging sprites on Starlight XX theme |
