Declan is protesting - through song - about the governmental corruption that is largely ignored in favor of sports, an escape from reality. When I was a junior in college, the university appointed - quite bluntly - a corrupt president (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Harreld). Less than 5% of the faculty believed he was qualified to lead the school, but through secret meetings and lots and lots of money, he was appointed to the position. Many of us fought back. I protested a lot during college. This incident was the first time I remember wellness being neglected for money. And - just like in the song - our protests were drowned out by the Big Ten football games. |
