To me, it's not necessarily a terrible thing. Not as good as if it were farther, but not as bad as a newer game. Without speed mods, it's not nearly as bad, as the arrows are coming a lot slower for me, and I can recognize them better than if I used my usual mods. If this was a MAX+ machine, then I'd say it'd be pretty awkward.

Playing on machines that have the pad that close to the screen always seems awkward.
