Would anyone else like the idea of potentially adding .smzip files for simfile packs on this site? Or would you rather use the old way of extracting them manually to the Program Files?

Personally, I like doing it manually. I remember downloading an .smzip that had one little thing wrong with it, so I tried to extract it but NO FUCK YOU HOWIE.

MANUALLY.
I use .smzip only for noteskins and some themes. So no (at least for me.) Post #4 · Posted at 2009-07-16 08:13:06am 15.5 years ago

.smzips really don't work when you have a copy of Stepmania that isn't installed and the account doesn't have administrative privileges.
Besides, it gets things confusing when all of the songs are in another (less commonly used) Stepmania.

It's just a glorified ZIP that saves me the two seconds it takes to navigate to my StepMania install. Seems rather redundant to reproduce it alongside the ZIP files.

well, we could always do both. it's easier for setting up cdtitles for simfile packs while downloading songs at the same time, or if you want to add in two different aspects of stepmania at once.

Personally, every time I get a .smzip file, I just rename the extension to a .zip since I find it easier. On top of that, all my Stepmania programs are not located in the Program Files and are not named Stepmania either since I organize my songs in mixes. I'm just not fond of .smzip files. But that's just me.

This is pretty much what I do. Except, I don't get simfiles from places that use smzip anymore, and my songs aren't even in a folder close to where the stepmania executable is.Plus I never figured out how smzip is supposed to work.
tl;dr:
I see no point in adding smzip to the site.

Personally, it's best to use ZIP files because, it gives you more options and choices. For example, with. A ZIP file, you choose which file directory you want to put the song, and with ab SMZIP file, the SMZIP file will put it in the folder the SMZIP's creator chose to where people install the song, which means you'll have a lot of junk folders and files if you continuously use SMZIP. Plus, if a person wanted to put a bunch of songs in one folder, he/she would have to do a little work and put the songs in one file. And ZIP files will allow you to find the song folder if Vista/7 users installed StepMania in Program Files, as with SMZIP, installing the song in Program Files would hide the folder and you would have to allow hidden folder view.

.smzip could be useful for when downloading packs.
