"now led_light for short"

Last updated: 2023-12-04 03:21am

After a bit of a delay, the fourth edition of the Freestyle Showcase is finally back! This is a simfile contest that aims to promote the freestyle/no-bar aspect of DDR, and where your chart-making skills will truly be tested across all difficulties!

TL;DR changes from last year's contest:
- New weekly deadline of Sundays at 18:00 UTC (instead of Tuesdays at 0:00 UTC).
- Implementation of deadline notification posts 7 days and 2 days before each submission deadline.
- Other minor clarifications/changes to rules and reworked FAQ text.

OVERVIEW
This contest consists of two (2) divisions: singles and doubles. Each division will consist of two (2) rounds, with participants submitting up to two (2) simfiles each round. After each round, the judges will review all of the submitted files, and the results will be announced at the end of each judging period. At the end of the contest, the participant with the two (2) highest-scoring simfiles wins.

THIS YEAR'S JUDGES:
Singles Division: led_light, RaverAce, t7r
Doubles Division: led_light, DJEmbrace

CONTEST RULES
1. There will be two (2) rounds in this contest, with each participant submitting up to two (2) simfiles per division per round. The submission period for each round will be three (3) weeks long; this should give everyone enough time to work on their files.
1.5. This means participants in both divisions can submit a maximum of four (4) simfiles per round or reuse the same simfile for both divisions, but they must specify the division(s) in which each simfile will be competing.
2. The judges will then have two (2) weeks to review the files and provide comments for each chart, after which the scores/results for all round 1 files will then be announced.
3. After the conclusion of round 2, the scores/results for all round 2 files will be announced, and the participant with the highest combined score from their two (2) highest-scoring simfiles across both rounds will win the contest.

SIMFILE RULES
1. For each division, you must provide at least three (3) charts in the Light-Heavy difficulty slots, with Beginner and Challenge being optional but recommended.
2. Charts must be rated on the DDR X-Scale (out of 20).
3. (NEW!) Charts should be synced to null offset. Any files that don't follow this rule won't be disqualified, but the sync may play a factor into judging depending on the severity of the issue.
4. Songs must be at least 1:00 and less than 2:30 in length (e.g. no "long versions" allowed).
5. Pad charts only, no keyboard charts.
6. Automatically generated steps are not allowed.
7. No rolls, hands, fakes, scrolls, or other gimmicks not found in DDR. Mines are allowed, but only in the form of shock arrows.
8. Split timing is allowed.
9. All contest charts must be new/unreleased for all divisions in which you are participating. Previously released simfiles that contain only singles (or only doubles) charts are still eligible for submission in the doubles (or singles) division only, provided that all included charts still follow the above rules.
10. Simfiles must be uploaded within the submission period.
11. Files must be uploaded to the simfile contest category using "Round 1" or "Round 2" as the section name when appropriate, and files must be named according to Z-I-v standards (e.g. if a simfile does not load in StepMania due to invalid characters, it will be treated as a non-submission and disqualified). See this handy guide by Ben Speirs for details on proper formatting (except for the username part unless it is required by the rules).
11.5. If two or more participants step song(s) with the same song title (across all rounds), the participant's username in square brackets must be appended to the song title when uploading files (e.g. "Party Rock Anthem [led_light]").
12. Graphics/BG videos are not required but recommended. If you do not provide your own graphics, I can make a set of basic graphics for you based on the song's official artwork for the final contest pack.
13. After the submission deadline has passed, making further changes to the contest charts is not allowed, but other updates such as fixing graphics or chart ratings are still permitted (but no later than the day after the round 2 deadline when the final pack is generated). Additional charts will not be judged regardless of play style.

SCORING CRITERIA
1. For each file, each judge will rate all charts on a scale of 0 to 10 (in increments of 0.5) and provide feedback for all charts in their division. The overall score for each chart will be determined by removing the highest and lowest scores among all judges (if there are at least 3 judges giving scores to that chart), and averaging the remaining scores. The overall score for each file per division will be determined by a weighted average of all charts in the file. The weights for each difficulty are given as follows:
Beginner = 2 (if stepped, singles division only)
Light = 4
Standard = 5
Heavy = 6
Challenge = 6 (if stepped)
2. If the scores of the Beginner or Challenge charts would bring the total average score for the simfile down, then the weights of each affected chart shall be zero (0) instead.
3. At the end of round 1, participants will receive a preliminary rank based on the score of their highest-performing simfile.
4. At the end of round 2, participants will be ranked based on the combined score of their two (2) highest-performing simfiles, regardless of the rounds in which those files were submitted (so both eligible files could be from a single round). The participant with the most points will win the contest. In case of a tie, the third highest-scoring simfile will determine the winner, followed by the fourth highest if needed.

DEADLINES
The deadline for submitting files (along with the announcement of results) will be on SUNDAYS at 18:00 UTC (for other time zones, that's Sundays at 10AM PST / 1PM EST, and Mondays at 3AM JST).

SCHEDULE
22 Oct: Round 1 Submissions Open
30 Oct: Judge Sign-ups Closed
12 Nov: Round 1 Submissions Closed
26 Nov: Round 1 Results, Round 2 Submissions Open
17 Dec: Round 2 Submissions Closed, Participant Sign-ups Closed
31 Dec: Round 2 Results

Reminder notifications will be sent in this thread and on the contest's Discord channels 7 days and 2 days before each submission deadline.

SIGN-UPS
Sign-ups for submitting simfiles are open all the way up until the end of the round 2 (but preferably at least 24 hours in advance so that I can add you to the contest category on time). Sign-ups for judging, however, will close after the first week of the round 1 submission period (so that the list can be finalized and participants have enough time to tailor their simfiles around them). You can sign up by posting in this thread or sending me a DM on Z-I-v/Discord; please say which division(s) you want to participate/judge in when doing so (and your Z-I-v username/ID if on Discord).

For more contest announcements, extended discussions, or to just chat with me and other participants, feel free to join the contest channels in the Z-I-v Contest Discord Server (but it is optional and not required to participate in the contest).

FAQ

Why this contest?
As someone who has been been making and reviewing charts over the widest range of difficulties for years now, I wanted a contest where all difficulties actually matter as well. But, only a small fraction of the simfiling community actually plays or reviews all difficulties, so a judging format only makes sense to me in this case.

What makes you qualified to be a judge?
I am a 3-time winner of previous Z-I-v simfile contests, as well as achieved Kaiden rank on both singles and doubles. And although I may be proficient at the highest difficulties, I still have the most fun playing the easier charts, both in terms of getting MFCs and in terms of finding the freestyle potential in them (here is a more recent example of this).

Is there any prize for winning?
No, but what you do get is guaranteed feedback that you can use to improve your simfiles in the future. Whether or not you decide to apply them is up to you, of course, but at least you get some free insights from someone who loves the freestyle/no-bar aspect of the game (and possibly others like me as well).

Are judges allowed to participate (submit simfiles) in this contest too?
Being a judge and a participant in the same division is not allowed (so a singles-only judge can participate in the doubles division and vice versa).

I want (or am eligible) to participate in only one division; can I still submit charts for the other division and receive feedback on those charts?
Yes, you can include charts in other play styles or even edit charts if you wish, but all charts must still follow the contest rules. Each judge is also free to provide additional scores/feedback for those charts as well, but that is completely optional (contest charts take first priority).

Is everyone eligible to be a judge?
Technically yes, although if there are too many sign-ups for judging (say, more than 6 per division), I may vet only those who have the most experience making and playing charts of all difficulties. Also, be warned that judging is a serious time commitment (perhaps even more so than being a participant), with around 12 hours of work per round (and that's just for singles). I would advise only signing up if you are willing and able to put in the time and effort into thoroughly playing all contest files; any scores I do not receive before each round deadline will not be factored into the final scores.

What exactly are you looking for in a good submission?
Short answer: new-school DDR charting style, but with old-school DDR difficulty curves. Old-school DDR charting can work as well with the right execution. [Or at least, this is what I'm looking for. Other judges may have slightly different ideas.]

Long answer: As long as the above rules are followed, almost anything goes, really (it's in the name of the contest). You can make each difficulty as easy or as hard as you want, but harder charts will naturally be harder to perfect with more steps to scrutinize. Personally, I tend to lean towards charts that are playable (but especially more fun to play) without the bar. I also like to give the player creative freedom to perform the steps in different ways, meaning that "ambiguous patterns" (while they may be discouraged in other play styles) can actually be a benefit in this contest. You can even include as many crossovers, spins, etc. as you want (even doublesteps/slides or steps that don't always go with the music), but perhaps the most important factor regardless is applying and executing these patterns appropriately. If you need any references, there are plenty of good simfiles out there to start with, including recent official DDR charts, winning charts from previous years, or maybe even the majority of my recent simfiles.

Do the judges have to adhere to some specific criteria? What do the scores mean in terms of chart quality?
No, and the specifics can differ between each judge, but this scoring system by Telperion from FS2020 is a good place to start.

Grading Criteria (roughly)
Repetition: Similar parts of the song are stepped similarly (but with variation to prevent deja vu or subconscious repetitiveness).
Pattern Variety: I don't want to be facing forward the whole time. I also don't want to be doing spins the whole time. Or any (insert specific motif here) the whole time.
Movement Comfort: Don't throw me around the pad like a sack of beef, or make my center of mass stop-and-go.
Density-to-Intensity: More exciting parts of the music get more exciting parts of the chart.

Grading Scale (roughly)
10: Absolutely blew me away. (Exception: I award this to Beginner charts with no glaring flaws.)
9: Really good - I would consider it a standout.
8: Solid chart. May have a few taste nitpicks but mechanically sound.
7: Good, but wouldn't take much to push it up to "great". I would tweak it here and there.
6: It's fine. Maybe boring, incohesive, or directionless. Maybe suffering from mechanical mistakes.
5: I didn't hate it but I won't play it again.
4: A few redeeming qualities, but serious issues. Would consider scrapping the chart and starting over.
3: I'm not feeling this at all. Needs a re-do.
2: I sense effort, as if a slight odor of simfile permeates the room, but cannot pinpoint its origin.
1: Didn't read the assignment.
0: Not actually a simfile. Might be three da-dons in a trenchcoat.

Count me in as well! Doubles division as usual.

I think you're about an hour early to the submission window, but either way, I'll allow it.

But as I was going to say, file submissions for Round 1 will be officially open in less than an hour! Although, since I've given an extra week for anyone to sign up as judges now, I would personally recommend not submitting your files just yet until the list is finalized, but whenever you decide to submit is still up to you. So far, t7r and RaverAce have returned for the singles division, although no one else seems to be willing to step up for doubles. Not that I mind holding all the power this time around, though, but y'all better bring your A-game if you're going to stand a chance of winning. Smile

Also, here is the list of participants I have so far, all of whom should be added to the category by now. Let me know if that is not that case for you, or if you're listed in the wrong division(s).

Singles-only participants:
- chrononical
- eataninja
- Venomothim (Astroman129)

Doubles-only participants:
- Braeden47
- Karl with a K (SirDj0nt)
- RaverAce
- t7r

Both:
- Ben Speirs
- extraordiberry
- forcednature
- kaya (about:blank)
- kaystar (Mrsmash64)
- MEGAtive (CLOUDIO)
- MuineliM
- P1989

"now led_light for short"

Last updated: 2023-11-10 06:01pm
Announcing a slight rule change/clarification due to a question that has recently come up. This simfile rule:

Quote
9. New simfiles only. You can't re-release a simfile you've already published (i.e. made publicly available for download).

has now been changed to:

Quote
9. All contest charts must be new/unreleased for all divisions in which you are participating. Previously released simfiles that contain only singles (or only doubles) charts are still eligible for submission in the doubles (or singles) division only, provided that all included charts still follow the above rules.

The previous rule was originally intended for the entire simfile to be brand new, i.e. any bonus charts must be unreleased too, but after a bit of discussion, I think a bit more leniency can be allowed in this regard. We'll see what happens in the coming weeks, but I don't foresee that this will affect the contest itself very much.

There is now just one week remaining to get your Round 1 files in! If you wanted to submit something for this round but haven't yet, I hope you've at least started working on it. No pressure if you can't, though (unless you want to submit more than 2 files to the contest as that's the limit per round/division).

Oh, and for all of us Americans in the contest, I almost forgot that Daylight Saving Time has just ended, so please re-check the OP above!

Just 48 hours left to get your Round 1 files in! Submit now or forever hold your peace.

EDIT: the pack is now updated with all of the custom ZIPs and Revolution's BGA included, please re-download if you've done so already (the links above are still the same)!

Also, one more new rule has now been added:

Quote
13. After the submission deadline has passed, making further changes to the contest charts is not allowed, but other updates such as fixing graphics or chart ratings are still permitted (but no later than the day after the round 2 deadline when the final pack is generated). Additional charts will not be judged regardless of play style.

2023/11/24 UPDATE: Due to the sheer number of entries this time around, the Round 1 results have now been postponed by a week in order to give all the judges enough time to review all of the charts. If I receive all of the scores earlier than that, I will announce them as soon as possible, but one week is the latest until which I will accept them at this point.

Keep in mind, however, that this does not affect the Round 2 schedule for now. Round 2 submissions will open in 48 hours time as usual, and I imagine two weeks should still be enough time to make any adjustments based on the Round 1 results as desired.

After a bit of a delay, the Round 1 results are finally here!

Closing Thoughts

In the singles division, venomothim takes the award for "best file of the contest" for the second year in a row with the amazing Dschinghis Khan! But remember, the contest isn't won with only one file! This year, the honor goes to P1989 with two very strong files in yellow head joe and wish!

For the doubles division, Round 2 is insanely stacked with the median score being a staggering 9.23! Everyone pretty much leveled up across the board from Round 1, and that includes kaystar who somehow managed to one-up themselves even further to take a resounding victory!

Honorable mentions goes to everyone from 2nd to 5th in both divisions, as the scores between them are so close to the point where it is practically a tie. But really, everyone should get a pat on the back for making what is by far the biggest and strongest pack to date!

And huge thanks to t7r, RaverAce, and DJEmbrace for taking on what has certainly been a daunting task this year! I'm sure it wasn't easy going through the record number of files this year, and I certainly didn't expect the contest to grow this much either! As previously announced on Discord, these are the proposed changes for the next iteration of the contest to ease the workload on the judges:

- No. of total rounds: 2 -> 3
- No. of submissions per round: 2 -> 1 simfile per person per division
- No. of weeks in each submission period: 3 -> 2
- No. of gap weeks between submission periods: 2 -> 1

Thank you for playing, and see you next time!
