Important Announcement!
Please make sure you read this. After much discussion, there will be a new change to how this tournament will be operating. We're super excited that so many people want to participate, however it may not be feasible for everyone to play through all the files that we've received at such an unprecedented rate. Tak and I have agreed on a new rule, and this affects everyone immediately moving forward:
In the case of 40 or more files being submitted in a single week, they will be divided into two groups. Two packs will be available for download, and will be voted on separately. You will only be voting on the songs in your group.
Think of it as two half-size summer contests happening at the same time. This means that this week will have 20 point scorers, the top ten from each group, as well as the 2 winners qualifying for the VIP room. Files will be divided alternating by song name, since it's essentially random and the most feasible way for me to organize everything.
There's still about 30 minutes left in week 1 if you want to make some last minute changes, or if anyone else wants to add their song to the pile. Once time is up, I'll upload two different packs and announce who is in each group. I understand this is a sudden change, but we believe this is the best way for everyone to keep their sanity and still be competitive. This week will pretty much be the test run to see if this system works, so all I ask is that everyone cooperates. Any questions and feedback are appreciated. Hopefully this will help things run smoothly.
Tak will be announcing the theme for Week 2 at 1PM.
Thank you!

Who discussed? I don't really like this new rule.
Post #185 · Posted at 2020-06-07 04:56:15pm 5 years ago
I agree, it seems a bit sudden and could be unfair.
Anyways,

Click to go to the simfile page. ITG-sized graphics on the comments.
Steps for each difficulty (with jumps): 93, 150, 242, 300.
It's nice to get back to simfiling, and the theme did its job in easing in for the coming themes.
Had a few selections but decided that this is the most catchy.
File has 64ths swing because 16ths and 24ths seem a tiny bit off. The scroll bits in SSC are represented as a stop in SM because they're functionally the same here.
Can't wait to play the files!

I understand this change with the amount of files, but I don't know if it'll paint an accurate picture of who really has the best of the week, because it's entirely possible someone will want to vote for stuff outside of their group - that said, I'd have been fine with this if it was announced earlier in the week as opposed to this close to the deadline.
Why not just increase the amount of points allotted?

I would be much more comfortable with this rule change if it were committed more than 20 minutes before the first week’s deadline. Why change it so abruptly giving zero time to the participants? With whom was this discussed anyway?

On of one hand, I get that there's a lot of files this week and it's time-consuming to play them all, but on the other hand this rule coming at almost the literal last minute seems a little messy. I'll play by the rules if that's what's decided, but I just wish this had been thought of earlier so it didn't come as such a shock.

In response to the rule on splitting the contest files: This rule change was discussed by VanEden and I; I brought it up to him after seeing lots of scattered comments complaining about how difficult or boring it's going to be to vote this week. I don't blame them; we're over 50 files at this point, and they're all on the very easier end in difficulty. This change was the most we could do to solve both the issue of giving points to more people and reducing the burden of voting while retaining the structure of the contest.
In future weeks, we may explore some more flexible options for voting and make changes as needed. As VanEden stated, this is essentially a test run.
Anyhow, I realize I've made a post about my Week 1 file but haven't even introduced myself to everyone playing here. I'm talkion, and I'll be helping VanEden out with the contest this year. Since it's Week 2, an even week, the theme will be provided by yours truly. And without further ado...
I know, I know! ZIv contest veterans may recognize this theme as a contentious rule from past contests. (So what's it doing here as a Summer Contest theme?) But there's a twist!
That's right. It's not BEMANI... but at the same time, it is BEMANI. Think PARANOiA Revolution. The general wording isn't just for the sake of being general; you can take from any chart in any BEMANI game, not just DDR (although that's probably the easiest option). If you choose to borrow from another game, you must explain how you translated the chart's patterning in either your simfile page's comments section or in a forum post on this thread.
Since the idea may not be very clear, look into this document for examples on translating patterns from other games.
Of course, if you choose to sample DDR charts, you can disregard all of this. Just make sure to indicate what charts you pulled from in your simfile page's comments or on this thread!
Some miscellaneous clarifications:
- Empty space can count towards your four beats. I won't be picky as long as there isn't patterning not originally in the chart you're sampling from in that one measure.
- Mirroring of patterning for flow is permitted.
- Criteria for what's considered a BEMANI song follows the same rules as when it was previously enforced: BEMANI originals are prohibited. Licensed songs featured in BEMANI games are permitted. Any song (even by a BEMANI artist) not featured in a BEMANI game (including remixes and mashups) are permitted.
Good luck, and don't be afraid to reply with any questions!

BEMANI songs are prohibited from selection. However, a section of at least four beats long from any chart in a BEMANI game must be included in your hardest chart.

^ This is pretty much how I feel. Theoretically speaking I could end up in a group with nothing but files that I thought were average to bad while the other group gets all the files I actually enjoyed. No doubt there's a massive number of files to look at but I'd rather be able to give points to the ones I genuinely feel were the best that week.

I rushed through it but I finished my file.
A.M. - Lonr
(Only one chart, 12 Difficulty)
https://zenius-i-vanisher.com/v5.2/viewsimfile.php?simfileid=41577
Criticism is extremely welcome because this is my first time ever uploading a simfile publicly.
I can't wait to play everyone else's files they look so smooth just by the graphics!

Interesting theme, goes full Para Revo.
Also, two Groups in a tournament? You know what that means!

Can't say I'm a fan of splitting the group, especially if one of the reasons is because all the entries are on the easier side. Sounds more like not planning the theme in the right week than anything.
Also literally changing it moments before the end of the first week without any input from us is a bad move, and now we are stuck waiting to even play any of these because we have no idea how the group is split up.

I checked the file when Asgoods posted and it was submitted prior to the deadline, perhaps the timing is a little inaccurate, but it's good to go. Why does it matter anyway? It's a simfile contest for fun. Let it in!

To everyone addressing their concerns and complaints on this thread:
Apologies for implementing this rule so late. I understand it's overwhelming and it may feel unfair for something unprecedented for Summer Contest to be announced so suddenly. However, the rule wasn't implemented because this week was easy. YMMV when it comes to this, and I'm sure there are many people that would enjoy judging for this theme a lot more than me. It mostly came down to considerations for the burden of judging and the sheer number of entrants.
As VanEden stated above, groups are split by alternating order by alphabetical listing in the category. Essentially, evens and odds. If you want to start judging now, you can do so by locating your file and downloading all of the files in your group individually. VanEden will have his pack downloads up soon as well.
