Okay, if you sent your votes to Pandy, take a screenshot of your PM and send it my way so I can verify that it was sent before the deadline. He's not online right now so I can't ask him. Sorry about this!

Both of you better have voted for Instruction, or else... I won't complain and will accept the results.
I'd make a terrible villain, I guess.

OKAY WEEK 9 TAKE TWO I THINK
The Gangnam Avenue officially wins 1st with 33 points.
Gloss got 2nd with 30 points and still gets Cuzco into the VIP room. No hopes have been dashed today.
illuminate placed 3rd.
Updated results are here, go nuts.

Thank y'all for the love on the Gangnam Avenue! I honestly didn't expect it do that well when there were so many damn good files, so this was a super pleasant surprise. Maybe there's hope for sub-9 footers after all.

I'll be streaming [Starts with Vowels] reviews in ~5 minutes! Join the fun!

I hope you didn't mean to come across as hostile in that opening line because that's how it read. I'm also prone to overanalyze things, though, so maybe I'm just sensitive.
Not my intention, but sorry if it came out that way. I've been trying to make sure it's been fun this contest and not take things seriously to the point of being aggressive or anything.
Quote
Personally, I don't know if I have a "preference". I'm not particularly picky when it comes to music genres in general (my playlists are a mess), and I've stepped hard charts before (are we gonna act like Hypergore Flying Squirrel Stick Disappeary Genius didn't happen) and voted for them on many occasions. There are very few times where I've disliked files for being "too hard". However, there are plenty of instances where I've disliked files for being hard for no reason (i.e.: there's a rift between the attitude of the song and the intensity of the steps).
I could say the same in regards to preference. There have been many entries in this contest that won me over surprisingly, such as Lion Eddie, Touch My Body, and Crow (usually I'm pretty meh when it comes to Bemani and pop entries, and even more so to simfiles that try to be like older DDR mixes). Then there are those that won that I just never really got into even though the next week a similar entry pops up and I like that one. It's strange. As for not fitting the song, it varies. Very much preference here for sure, given there is no set way to chart specific genres. Then again, coming from Pump, I am kind of used to seeing harder-than-necessary charts.
Quote
I'm not saying files should appeal to everyone; I'm trying to say the opposite. I'm saying I wish contests like the SC were used as a time for exploration for steppers to push their boundaries and the boundaries of simming in general. Instead, we have weeks where 80% of entries are eerily similar genres (mostly of the electronic variety) with crossovers and jumps left and right, and after playing those for weeks, you can't expect those files to not feel derivative of each other.
I'm guilty of similar genres but it is most certainly due to coincidence, not because I'm playing it safe. I'm awful when it comes to song selection so pinning down specific themes helps me focus on certain songs instead of opening up my large library and struggling to pick a song. I don't think they are necessarily derivative of each other (especially true for me, the closest to that is Paripi Princess because I wanted something akin to Fire Fire for it), just a coincidence if that happens. For me, crossovers are fun as hell so I add them all the time. The only time I held back a lot was China Dress, and Tikal added more than I did in that chart. The other times it is simply because I want them.
And I'm all for pushing boundaries. Simfiles that have split timing, scrolls, speed changes, attacks, more than five charts, and alternate audio tracks will probably win me over more than anything else, but it isn't always a guarantee either.
Quote
Lastly, I don't doubt people submit fun charts for the easier difficulties, but you and I both know that most of the people voting for those 9-footers are not playing all the easier difficulties if any.
Sadly, the lower difficulties are where I experiment more, and it's something I've been doing since the Battle Royale this year. Disheartening too, but for some of my votes this contest many won me over with the lower charts while there have been times a simfile I thought was alright on one difficulty ended up having a lower difficulty that was just the same with some notes removed and thus affected my vote. If you weren't going to put effort into those just don't include them?Quote
Has anyone else ever started a file and either dropped it or didn't submit it thinking it "wouldn't get votes"?
Literally every entry of mine I thought would not get many votes... except Worker Bees. Every other file of mine has made top ten in votes and out of those only one did not make top 5. I definitely know why that is the case for that particular song and will readjust it sometime, but still kind of... odd.Anyway, I'm bad at explaining things.

Hi
apparently my long as shit file names don't let it load in stepmania (is working on my end, however this was a concern I had given the nature of the character limit), so I reuploaded it with shorter filenames in a custom zip, please redownload if you already did, or download that custom zip if you haven't downloaded it yet.
Thank you ddrstepper for notifying me about the issue

I got in VIP with only one file. I'm not counting the file in the week I failed to vote for.
... I can't believe it.
I don't know how but all I know, even though it was statistically improbable, is that I've been blessed despite missing almost every week.
Seriously though, thank you for the love for Gloss. Whether it was a +5 or HM. <:3
I may not have gotten into Vowels but the good news is now I have 14 days to finish my file for that week instead of potentially rushing it. I'll probably employ it for the first VIP round.
Feedback for the Deja Vu files should be up shortly.

@DigitalBasic--point by point:
1) No worries, I just wanted to make sure there was no bad blood and make my intentions clear. The social anxiety and paranoia in me jumped out.
2) Yeah, I guess you're right that steps "fitting" a song is more of a preference thing, I suppose. One person could very well think it works while another doesn't. I think part of the reason I'm so adamant about songs mirroring their respective steps is because I've been treating simfiles like English essays since like 2015 or something. I know that sounds whack but if you read my spiel about Egoist, you'll understand But again, I can't expect everyone to think it's that deep.
3) Ahh, I understand. Personally, I know if someone mentions when posting their file that they're particularly proud of one of their lower difficulty charts, I'll take a look at it out of curiosity, and I'm sure others would to, so hopefully some of y'all can make a mental note of that.
4) OK yeah you and Gameoson mentioned that, and I've had the same experiences this year already, so I guess it just goes to show you gotta step for yourself first and foremost.
Totally forgot to post these, but...
Here were my rankings for [Deja Vu]

In a way, making simfiles really is just like an English essay. Right down to the part where everyone has different writing styles and everyone is going to have a billion different opinions on what's right and what's wrong. The way I step is also me just trying to mirror the song as best as I can, it's just according to my one interpretation. What might seem arbitrary to you might actually have a significant purpose to me.
...Or not. Crossovers are fun, sometimes I shoehorn them in just because.

There will be no more simfiles for the main contest.
There is still voting for the final round, Starting with Vowels.
After that, the contests will proceed to the VIP room, where only ohaiimian, Gameoson, ledgam3r1279, Feraligatr, ddrstepper, Daffa212162, DigitalBasic, DDRDAIKENKAI, me, TikalFan9000, djVERTICAI, and four other people (yet to be determined) can submit.

So I just noticed that I accidentally uploaded an OGG file instead of a PNG file in the jacket section of my file.
Would I be allowed to swap it out as long as I don't reupload the real audio file or the SM/SSC files?

Here's my Deja Vu ranks and feedback.
Don't be afraid to toss your rankings and any comments you had about the files (if any) into the ring too. I do like to know what people thought of my files and even what they thought of other people's files: Feedback has started to feel very elusive lately. ;)
+3 Don't let it go
+3 Flow (The Acolyte's Zero Tolerance Remix)
+2 The Gangnam Avenue
+2 Dirty Little Pop Song
+1 Instruction (feat. Demi Jones)
+1 Tsukiyo LOVESONG
+1 illuminate
+1 One More Lovely
+1 Let's Have A Kiki
HM Papaoutai
HM Destiny Bond [Lavender Town Gltichhop Mix]
HM Kicky Kemari Kicker
HM Tori-no-kimochi
HM Wrecking Ball
HM Problem
HM Night Sky
.. Everybody (Backstreet's Back)
.. Lean On (feat. MO)
Almagest
I played the hardest chart for everything except for One More Lovely (I can't fairly judge 14s, let alone 17s), where I went for standard. I also played the challenge chart for Flow.
Almagest: Jesus Christ. Are you actually play-testing your files at all? I mean, I'm sorry, but fucking seriously, how did crap such as b272-276 slip past you?? Also the freezes during b188 and onwards are unfun, song didn't feel engaging in general... I'm sorry but this was a disaster. .-. There ARE somewhat decent files I've played from you such as (in my opinion) BAILE LA SAMBA and marigold but this one just didn't work at all.
Destiny Bond [Lavender Town Gltichhop Mix]: I think I would like this more if that stream at b68-76 was toned down to rolls or something. As it is, it seems like a really, really unnecessary difficulty spike.
Dirty Little Pop Song: Generally pretty fun! Why were there no spins at the "spinnin' in your head" section though? That was quite a missed opportunity. (They appear to be only present on light)
I actually never played Lisek's version so I'm un-biased here.
Don't let it go: I think this was perfect! I can't think of a single thing to complain about here and it'd be a blast to pad.
Everybody (Backstreet's Back): This is actually the first contest file I've played from you. Unfortunately, you have botched the cut. Or the person that stepped it in a previous Summer Contest did, but you still could've improved on that. It starts off about a 32nd note early, then there's a really jarring cut at b128 (1:11 in the song) and suddenly the sync is more spot-on. As for the steps, there were I think a couple of double steps but they didn't seem that glaring. What was glaring were freezes such as b113. I think the freeze-forced candles don't fit the song, I'd alternate between LDL instead. The jump stream at b104-110 seems a little too much for this difficulty. Also please use .ogg files. Trying to nitpick things in the SM5 editor is a pain because VBR .mp3s don't play well with it.
Flow (The Acolyte's Zero Tolerance Remix)
: Probably one of your best files yet. :3 I'd switch some of the down/up arrows at b33, 35, and 37 because the whole section notably faces right. Maybe make all of them up arrows? Or b33 up and b35 down? That way, you'd get every symmetrical mirror of the LDLDU pattern. The 24th bursts seem kind of... off. I wouldn't have one at b79, but instead at b80. I'd also have the 24th burst at b95 be at 95.5 instead, and add note at b94.75 and 94.25. I find it interesting how in places like the chorus, you had the rhythm of the steps compliment the song instead of actually following it. I think it works, it just the 24th bursts I'm more picky about.
Flow (The Acolyte's Zero Tolerance Remix)
: Loving the side-footswitches near the beginning! The rest of the shock arrows are pretty well-utilized. I found the laterals such as b148-151 kind of bizarre but I guess at a song this tempo it's not a problem. The note at b130.5 would probably be better at 130.75, and same goes for the similar notes.
illuminate: There was one thing I didn't really like: The rhythms during b146-148 and b168-176. I know what you're following but it just didn't feel natural, b146-148 seems more like a solid 16th stream and 168-176... I would've followed the record scratching instead.
Instruction (feat. Demi Jones): I love the left/right/low/high gimmick going on here. :3 Can't remember if Astro's take on it did that. I would probably move b176.250 to right if 16th jacks are gonna be used there.
Kicky Kemari Kicker: I guess pitch relevancy simply isn't a thing in your files. :P Which is fine, as much as I like pitch relevancy I thought this file did good in somewhat standing out with pattern decisions.
Lean On (feat. MO): Eh. Well, at least it's not completely broken like some of your other files. I think you should've not used jumps in the almost-entirely-vocals section of the file. And maybe branch out your rhythm choices a bit more. It's okay to step other things when what you're following (in this case mostly the vocals) takes a break.
Let's Have A Kiki: I guess you just simply got bored with the graphics? :P The skittles were... interesting. I think this started to drag on after the two minute mark. Not that this harmed it that much, a lot of the given chart was good.
Night Sky: Some parts of the chart didn't match the intensity of the song consistently: The mostly vocal sections such as 100-164 are generally stepped on point, but the more interesting parts of the song such as b68-100 seem to be almost all 4ths. I guess this is the fault of the song more than you but still, jumps at least would've spiced that section up. I like the cute "hey" gimmick at b171.
One More Lovely
: Hey... this actually wasn't notably flawed. Unlike your past couple of submissions, I couldn't find any particularly noticeable (accidental) double-stepping present, which benefitted this chart. I think the very final ending stream could be toned down a bit, it seems a bit overkill for the chart given most of it plays out in all 8ths with tiny sprinkles of 16ths. Actually I think this chart seems like a borderline 9 or mid-10, not really an 11.
Papaoutai: Can you expect mf32892 stepping Pentatonix to go wrong? :P I don't have any gripes with the file at all. It just works.
Problem: I remember NuVirus' take being kind of fun to play but it's been a while since I looked at it. Hmmm... I think the rhythm choices for this one felt a bit fudged, but I can't exactly pinpoint where. I can pinpoint, however, that the spins didn't make any sense (it was in a quiet part of the song) and genuinely felt shoehorned in.
The Gangnam Avenue: I like what you're accomplishing with the mines, it added dynamic to the chart and its purpose. This is really good.
Tori-no-kimochi: Interestingly structured... I like crossovers and I'm fine with 3-note 24th bursts at this speeds. Combining them both (b187.667)? Hmm... I don't know. At that speed that's faster than the doublesteps in Almagast (198 BPM 16ths). Maybe it comes down to personal preference. 150 BPM 16ths is probably as high as I would tolerate on pad.
Tsukiyo LOVESONG: Believe it or not I also have an edit for this (for mu-box's cut) sitting around in my StepMania. I wonder if I should employ it someday... somehow... somewhere. We're gonna-- magic in the air. Definitely unique! I'm still trying to figure out how to make lifts work myself (and this simfile told me the noteskin I use didn't care enough to account for them LMAAOOOOO) and while I couldn't help but find some parts confusing, I thought this simfile on the whole was pretty fun.
Wrecking Ball: I don't think this chart came into the top of my rankings like a wrecking ball (I'm so sorry). I still found it pretty good, but somewhat unremarkable. I think notes b39-40.5 are unnecessary. I don't think the very final arrow (b197) was necessary either, I would've ended both of the freezes there.

Flow (The Acolyte's Zero Tolerance Remix)

illuminate: There was one thing I didn't really like: The rhythms during b146-148 and b168-176.

Don't be afraid to toss your rankings and any comments you had about the files (if any) into the ring too. I do like to know what people thought of my files and even what they thought of other people's files: Feedback has started to feel very elusive lately. ;)
