American Idiot / Green Day
Difficulties:

Qualifying lyrics
"The subliminal mind f*** America."
"Well maybe I'm the f***** America."
I hope you enjoy the charts! They should be very straightforwards except for one doublestep.
I left it it b/c it feels kinda natural tbh.
This is my only file for this week.
Good luck to everyone!

I don't think I can get anything done for the Passport week. Got too busy with school-related stuff and family things. I look forward to see what files you guys have on offer.

Okay, time for me to vote.
The fifteen lucky winners are...
Anklebiters
Kind Lady -FUTURE TRANCE MIX-
Common World Domination
Drop FM
ヘドバンギャー!!
サプリミナル・ダイエット
会社はワタシで廻ってる!?
Neon Twilight
Recorrection
Reverse
Run the World (Girls)
Suzy
Tears
Tomadoi Mischief
No Light, No Light
Here are my ratings (and explanations for them):
How did I choose the files to give points to?
1. Any 0-pointers from the .. to +! range were given first priority. (UPDATE: Looks like I gave away a point from 'I Want You To Know' to 'No Light, No Light'. Sorry, though I won't change my vote
)
2. All of the files with a +! were also given points.
-If I had more points to give, I would have drawn from the +? catagory. (In fact, one of the files, River, was moved from the +! to the +? catagory due to an influx of files that I couldn't find a problem with.)
In case you were wondering how some files got those ratings, it's likely because I based my ratings solely on the
/
(beginner/basic, as I called them) charts, as I didn't spend as much time on the reviews as I did last time. (I'm sure the others have the
/
difficulties down, but send me a personal message and I'll be glad to look at the other difficulties of your file.) I highlighted most of my expectations in my previous voting session, but I feel that it's important to add two things:
1.) Using an up or down arrow after a left-right jump can easily be ambiguous; the only way to avoid problems with this is to have a left or right arrow (in the direction the player is supposed to be in) shortly after the up or down arrow.
2.) To avoid being unfair to those with
charts, I expect the files that start on the
difficulty to be fairly minimalistic. Though I'm a little less strict on these than on
charts,
charts that have noticeably more difficult than necessary (Benpai's files are a good example) will be barred from the +! rating.
Here are the notes that I took:
And finally, the totals:

Here are my ratings (and explanations for them):
+! = A brilliant example of what to find in low level charts! Practically no flaws, or very minor flaws that could be easily overlooked. Equivalent to an A+
+? = Great charts, but either some noticeable flaws, or different styling from what I would prefer. Equivalent to an A or A-.
.. = Good charts, but definitely has some noticeable flaws that bring it down quite a bit. Equivalent to a B+ to a B-.
-? = Some good ideas, but multiple sloppy errors that can easily be fixed. Equivalent to a C+ to a C-.
-! = Please overhaul this immediately. In this instance, it’s playable, but has little cohesion, and would fit into the D+ to D- range.
In the future, I’ll probably split the + rating into +!!, +!?. +??, to better separate files of this caliber, with the middle being for mere stylistic disagreements or very minor flaws, and the latter being for an occasional flaw in an otherwise excellent file.
+! = Common World Domination, Drop FM, ヘドバンギャー!!, Neon Twilight, Recorrection, Reverse, Run The World (Girls), サプリミナル・ダイエット, 会社はワタシで廻ってる!?, Suzy, Tears, Tomadoi Mischief
+? = 2on, Bury It (Loved both charts, but the beginner chart has a minor flaw in it) Disco Night, Do It All Night, do the thing (feat. Kanae Asaba.), Hoshi Furu Yoru No Adenium (could use a beginner chart with such a difficult basic chart), Kind Lady –FUTURE TRANCE MIX-, Longin 4 U (again, great chart, but could use a beginner chart too), Paradisus-Paradoxum, Pick Me Up, Pokno2 Girlish, Portait of the Pirate F (English ver.), Problem, River, Stay Awake, TIEFSEE, Whenever, Wherever
.. = Anklebiters, Big Boss, Hung Up (mainly due to the beginner chart’s flaws), I Want You To Know, IGNITE (loved what was present, but obviously unfinished
), Ride (feat. Ludacris) (almost worthy of being in the ‘+?’ category, but the problems I had with this chart were amplified with the frankly boring nature of the song’s BPM (no offense))
-? = About to fly (cool rhythm choice, but careless errors!), Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (the beginner chart was more in the ‘+?’ range, but the basic chart has some careless mistakes), No Light No Light (Really between the '-?' and '..' catagory, but the song's inappropriately abrupt ending seals the deal here)
-! – Hello, Hello (The beginner chart is more in the ‘-?’ category, but the basic chart really drags it down)

Here are the notes that I took:
2on- The beginner chart is a tad unfriendly for playing in the ‘DDR helper’ style, but very good in its own right! The direction change in measure 23 had me on edge, but it ended well.
The basic chart was pretty nice too! The only weird thing that stood was the 8th left-right jump in measure 20; I would have preferred it was quantized as a 32nd jump to sync perfectly with the last syllable of the vocals (in “the feelings overtook”). Other than that, nothing to complain about.
About to Fly- In the basic chart, there seems to be a doublestep in measure 10, which could be fixed by changing the down arrow in beat 37 into a left arrow. (This might have been intentional, but I don’t like the considerable amount of facing backwards this entails.) Measures 56-57 also have doublestep, and I felt that changing the down arrow on beat 220 to a left arrow would have ended the spin better and avoided the issue. Finally, the final stream before the long series of jacks has confusing direction changes (some facing the player backwards for a considerable amount of time), making it difficult to play without doublestepping. Maybe switching the directions of the left-right arrows in beats 305-306 would make this play a little better, but ultimately, this stream needs some serious restructuring. I like the streamy nature of the chart, as well as some of the spins, but this chart feels a little sloppy at places. (Also, this is definitely at least a 5.)
Anklebiters- For the basic chart, I would have liked to see some 8th notes, such as in beats 53.5, 61.5, 69.5, etc., to go with the guitar. Also, I think measure 43 would flow a little better if beat 167 is made into a down arrow instead of a left arrow. Measure 53 feels like a potential doublestep that could be avoided if beat 209’s down arrow was changed into a right arrow. (The same can be said for beat 241’s up arrow, which can be changed into a left arrow.) The backwards finish was pretty interesting. Overall, there were some oddly placed jumps, such as in beats 52 and 208, but they are handled fairly well for what they are.
Big Boss- For the beginner chart, I felt that beats 86 and 94 should have been added to finish the up/down jacks, respectively. Also, as this is a beginner chart, I would have preferred that the triplet pattern in beats 173-175 were triplet patterns instead. Other than that, I couldn’t find anything wrong with it, and enjoyed it quite a bit.
For the basic chart, there seems to be a doublestep in measure 31, which could be fixed by changing the down-right jump into a down-left jump. That seems to be the only real flaw with this chart, though. I liked the streaminess of it, though mf32892 has a point when he took issue with this chart being ‘a long stream of 4ths’; a little more variety would have definitely spiced up the chart and show true workmanship with lower level charts, and, at 160 BPM, this chart could be considered a 5.
Bury It- I liked the beginner chart and its freeze-turns! Measure 27 onwards, though, would be bound to produce a doublestep for anyone who plays it like most other (harder) charts, not returning the feet to the center after every step. To fix it, you could make beat 100 an up arrow, or make beat 104 a down arrow.
I also liked the basic chart, and couldn’t find any glaring flaws with it.
Common World Domination- The beginner chart was pretty good, nothing to say about it. (It could easily be rated a 1, though.)
The basic chart is also very nice! I would have liked to have seen a jump-step pattern in beats 220-224, similar to the next difficulty up, but that is really nitpicking, as there aren’t any actual flaws in the chart.
Disco Night- The beginner chart has some patterns that may be a little unfriendly to the ‘DDR Helper’ style, and also has some interesting 8th notes, but it’s pretty good.
The basic chart was pretty fun too. One thing I would have liked to have seen were freeze arrows, particularly in the 4th-16th-8th parts where you only used 4th and 8th notes (beats 80-81.5, 88-89.5, etc.), to bridge together notes.
Do It All Night 2003- The heavy freeze note usage in the beginner chart is a little weird, but it works out moderately well. Also, starting on the up arrow can be an issue in the chart, since it is unsure which direction the player needs to be facing.
For the basic chart, starting on the up arrow isn’t as big an issue, since it starts off an up-left triplet, and most players would probably know to hit the up arrow with the right foot. I also felt that measures 28 onwards was a potential doublestep that could be eliminated by changing the down arrow in beat 107 into an up arrow, and changing the down-left jump that follows into an up-left jump. Other than that, I like the chart.
do the thing (feat. Kanae Asaba)-For the beginner chart, I’m not sure why the freeze arrow in measure 16 lasts only 2 beats instead of 3. Other than that, the chart is very good.
For the basic chart, I think it would have been cool to have freeze arrows lasting one beat at the arrows in beats 163, 167, and 171. Ultimately, however, it’s a good chart.
Drop FM (feat. Hannah Diamond)- The beginner chart was pretty nice, nothing to say about it.
The basic chart was also good with its rhythm selection.
Harmonia- The beginner chart was a little easy for such a high-energy song, but it works well. One thing I noticed was that measures 18 onward had an ambiguous pattern, one that tricked me into doublestepping; to rectify this, I would change the down arrow on beat 68 into a left arrow. Other than that, there’s nothing in this chart that I can take issue with.
As with it’s basic chart, I enjoyed it, but also was caught off guard with an ambiguous up freeze in measures 26-27; one possible way to fix it would be to move the jump up and 8th, then have a right arrow just before the freeze (and, possibly move down the freeze down an 8th).
ヘドバンギャー!!- My favorite basic chart so far, with fun 4th streams and tasteful use of 8th notes.
Hello, Hello- More copy/pasting? I hope you learn how to move away from this bad habit soon.
The beginner chart has 8th notes unfriendly to the ‘DDR Helper’ style, and the parts at 120 are very bland, but it doesn’t play badly, save for the 8th note at beat 37.5 (which I would move a beat down). Also, I have no idea what the isolated 8th notes from beats 44.5-46.5 are doing there; I would eliminate them, and instead, place 4th notes in beats 44, 46, and 47.
With what you seem to be going for in the basic chart, I would add an 8th right arrow at beat 32.5, to go with the vocals. There appears to be a doublestep in measure 10, which you could fix by making the up arrow in beat 38 a right arrow. (Conversely, you could attach a gallop to the right arrow on beat 135, for more consistency with the rest of the piece.) I would also eliminate the 8th note in beat 44.5 and change the 8th pattern that follows to left-down-up-right. Furthermore, I would change the 4th note in beat 95 to face right instead of left. The slowdown with 8th notes also has a strange spin, though it does straighten itself out, to be fair. As a whole, I would consider this chart to be a 3 instead of a 2.
Hoshi Furu Yoru No Adenium- The basic chart was quite nice, though a little difficult, with no flaws I could find.
Hung Up- The beginner chart has a doublestep (for those note returning to the center of the pad after hitting each note) in measure 15, which can be fixed by flipping the directions of the jacks in measures 15-17, and changing the up-down-up pattern in measure 21 into down-up-down. The up arrow jacks are also ambiguous, which could be rectified by changing them to face right.
The basic chart was pretty good, and there was nothing to complain about.
I Want You To Know- For the basic chart, I think that beats 58-64 would have made for a fun ‘doublestep pattern, by repeating each note that’s present in this section. There’s also a doublestep present, which can be fixed by changing the up note on beat 80 into a down note, or by changing the up freeze arrow in beat 86 into a right freeze arrow. While I’m fine with the patterns from beats 114 to 143.5, they felt like they were placed without much thought put into it. Finally, there is the ambiguous up freeze at beat 206, which may be better off as a right arrow freeze.
IGNITE- No surprise, you did a much better job at me at this song! (Looking back, I’m surprised how well my rendition of this songs was in the Simfile Shuffle.) The basic chart was very tasteful and has an excellent use of 8th notes! I was completely pumped… right until the notes suddenly stopped well before the song ended!
Kind Lady –FUTURE TRANCE MIX—Compared to what you put out last week, I’m actually quite impressed with the basic chart in here! The rhythm choices were pretty good, albeit a tad weird in some places, and there weren’t any doublesteps, with ambiguous patterns (such as the up arrow in beat 200) being the closest there is to one. (Unfortunately, the heavy chart’s ending is a different story, but I’m not counting that one for my review.) As far as suggestions go, one would be to extend the 8th freeze arrow in beat 85.5 by half a beat to match up with the vocals. I would also consider adding freeze notes that are .75 beats long to the arrow in beats 90, 98, 122, and 130.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch- could use a little more amplification (in fact, 1.15 dB without clipping the audio), but the audio quality was good, which I like
The beginner chart had a very good sense of rhythm, and had an 8th note at the end, which, while weird and threw me off guard a little, is important as it announces the title in full. I thought the pattern in measures 18-20 was weird in facing the player backwards, but it ends relatively well.
As for the basic chart, there was a doublestep that could be fixed early on by changing the left-right-down pattern in measure 26 to right-down-up. Another one appears later on in the song, which can be fixed by changing the right note in beat 174 into a left note, and changing the left note in beat 176 into a right note. Also, I don’t know why 4th notes don’t have 8th notes attached to them, like the other notes in the section. I’ve also noticed some notes that are good candidates for becoming freeze notes, such as the ones in beats 210 and 224. Speaking of the note on beat 224, I think it would be fitting for it to end a down arrow jack that would begin on beat 223 and use 8th notes, as this is what the vocals seem to want in this case. Finally, I would move the arrow on beat 227 an 8th down so that it goes in sync with the guitar. Unfortunately, this chart is a noticeable step down from the beginner chart.
Longin 4 U- The basic chart is lovely, but there’s definitely room for an easier chart that remains unfilled.
Neon Twilight- The beginner chart is a simple chart, but a simple chart executed well!
Interesting to see a harder basic chart too, but it was also very fun! I would have preferred it a little more if you used all four arrows during the freeze patterns (such as left-right-down-up and up-down-right-left) instead of just left-right-left-right or up-down-up-down, but I had so much fun with the chart that I don’t care too much.
No Light, No Light- (appended 7/28: 22
The beginner chart has a doublestep (for those not returning their feet to the center of the pad after playing each note), which can be fixed by changing the left arrow in measure 8 into a right one. Also, I would make the single up arrow in measure 35 a down arrow. Though the left-right patterns are a bit DDR helper unfriendly, and though the patterns feel a little inconsistent, it's not bad otherwise.
As for the basic chart, there seems to be an easy doublestep that could be alleviated by switching the directions of the up-down freeze arrows in beats 138-139. Another doublestep appears, which can be fixed by changing beats 188-189 to right-left instead of left-down. Finally, I would change the up-left jump in beat 233 to a down-left jump to improve the flow.
Paradisus-Paradoxum- The beginner chart is perhaps the most bizarrely fun that I’ve seen, which the minimalist steps styled with 2 8th notes and the 7-note jack at 201 BPM! Definitely a bit unbalanced, but doesn’t try to not be a beginner chart, so I didn’t mind too much. (I didn’t have a problem with it, but especially for a 1 footer, I’d imagine beginner players would be flustered with it. Maybe removing beat 156 to split the jack so that it only spans 5 arrows would make it a little more bearable for such players.) There is a doublestep in here though, starting at measure 21, so to fix it, would consider flipping the directions of the four arrows in measures 21-24.
The basic chart was also quite good! The measure of blank space in measure 25 after the speedup back to 201 BPM was a little strange, so I would suggest placing an arrow on beat 100, or some arrow in the vicinity to eliminate the emptiness. Also, considering the song, I feel that the triplet patterns from measures 26-30 should have been switched with the more simple patterns from measures 33-38, considering the song (namely the vocals). The rest of the chart was pretty nice, though.
Pick Me Up- The beginner chart had 2 patterns where 4th notes facing different directions were adjacent to each other, which places burden on those playing ‘DDR style’. Also, I felt that the single jump-freeze should definitely have lasted a beat longer, to better match with the music. Nothing else to say about it, though.
The basic chart was pretty nice, with nothing to say about it.
Pokno2 Girlish- The basic chart was very fun, but there definitely could have been an easier chart for the beginner slot.
Portrait of the Pirate F (English ver.) - The beginner chart is almost perfect, but there is a doublestep in measure 53. To be fair, this isn’t the easiest fix, as to do so without a substantial restructure would likely involve making beat 210 or 212 into a down arrow, and that could be negative on the aesthetic quality of the chart.
Of course, the basic chart is also very nice. Personally, I think that beats 358-359 make for a great place to use an 8th jack as an accent, and I also wonder why this and the beginner chart lack the final note present in the harder charts. Perhaps in this chart, the last note of it could be made into a freeze arrow lasting one beat long.
Problem- The beginner chart is pretty good, but that freeze arrow was oddly placed. I would replace it with 3 notes: one where the freeze notes begins, one where it ends, and one in the middle.
The basic chart was also pretty good, though the omitted note from the basic section (particularly the ‘One less problem without you’ section) stood out to me quite a bit. Maybe make the last note of each 4th-8th-4th pattern a freeze that ends on this bass note?
Recorrection- The beginner chart was great! I couldn’t find anything wrong with it.
The basic chart was also great and relaxing! Nothing to complain about.
Reverse- Was that autotune that I heard from the beginning? Needless to say, the basic chart flows very well, and there wasn’t anything to complain about.
Ride (feat. Ludacris) - The beginner chart starts on the ambiguous up arrow, but it’s hard to go wrong with the repetitive pattern you set up for this chart (save for the few jumps/freezes).
I don’t like how the basic chart faces you backwards until the second set of freeze spins in measure 9, but the rest of the chart is fine. It’s definitely an easy 2 at most, and could even be a 1.
River- I wasn’t a fan of starting with the ambiguous down arrow, but other than that, the beginner chart was nice.
In the basic chart, the freeze arrow in beat 198 that lasts only a ½ beat long was strange (and doesn’t seem to match up with the vocals), but otherwise, I love the chart.
Run The World (Girls) - Some strange direction changes, but I really enjoyed the basic chart.
サプリミナル・ダイエット – Perfection! Nothing I can say here.
会社はワタシで廻ってる!?- The beginner chart is pretty nice. Maybe some rhythm choices were a tad weird, but nothing concrete to complain about.
I also love the basic chart! Maybe some 8th notes used sparingly would work, such as in measures 40-41, but still a great chart nonetheless.
Stay Awake- The perpendicular directions the player faces (without doublestepping) before the left-right arrows in beats 76, 204, and 268 were fairly strange, and the arrow turns at 160 are fairly difficult to those playing ‘DDR Helper’ style, but the beginner chart is pretty good for the most part.
As for the basic chart, I wonder why the gallop pattern in measure 27 wasn’t repeated in measure 59, and the jumps near the end had ambiguous up-down notes, but other than that, the chart was quite fun.
Suzy- Loved the beginner chart, nothing to say about it.
The basic chart was great too, with nothing to say about it.
Tears- Nice ‘tears on my pillow’ reference!
Anyways, I loved the beginner chart, with nothing to say about it.
The basic chart was also great, though it could also be a 3 footer.
TIEFSEE- Great infusion of V in this song!
The beginner chart was quite nice, nothing to complain about.
The basic chart was very good too! However, I felt like the up jack in measure 52 was 3 notes too long (as the piano chord starts to descend then), that measure 54 could have had a down arrow jack, and that the left arrow jack in measure 55 overstayed its welcome by 2 notes (I would have made the left note in beat 219 a right note here.). In other words, a disagreement over how you stepped the ‘V’ piano part.
Tomadoi Mischief- The basic chart was pretty nice, nothing to say here.
Whenever, Wherever- The basic chart was quite nice, except for ending a little early (like all of the other charts). If the final triplet can’t be synced correctly, then I would expect that the final freeze arrow be lengthened by a beat.
I feel like there's a threshold between "this file is good and it should've have points by now" and "this file has 0 so it should immediately get points"... Not directed to any of the files that previous had 0 in particular, but just in general...
That's just me though.
This is also why I like to vote early, so that my opinion on files don't get thrown off by other people's comments.

There was a baseline standard I established in the first place. (Otherwise, I would have given a point to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.) The files that I gave points to were all files that I generally liked, and weren't the kind that I think deserve 0 points.
To be fair, though, I probably being too lenient on files without points. Maybe next time, files with my .. ranking won't be considered for my vote... it depends.

There's also I Want You To Know, the only other file without any.
The reason why I ranked 7/42 files with bad grades (higher radius than 5/44 last round) varied... Some of the files might not be that bad in the end, but my reasoning was either doublesteps all over the place, bad song choices or cuts, lazy or inconsistently stepped charts, difficulty spikes, or certain things (like the 16th step-step-jump bursts at a high BPM in Longing 4 U, if I remember correctly) that don't seem to belong in pad files. This is also most likely the reason most of them didn't get any points prior. Or a combination of a lot of these (very bad).
In addition to Gameoson's explanations about doublesteps, the thing I've personally noticed is it only takes about 3 or 4 doublesteps for the average stepartist in these contest to lose faith in the chart and doublestep legitimate crossover patterns. Because at this point, how do you know any crossover is going to correctly be resolved and where should you doublestep to avoid facing backwards? Not to mention it's likely the accidental doublesteps might not even go to the music at all. They CAN be pulled off tastefully, however I would just avoid them altogether.

Arizona Cowboy

SN2 Rating:

X Rating:

10
Old Korean Pop. Released in 1959. Country music. I don't know why they connected 'Arizona' and 'Cowboy', but they imagined the American Old West. BPM isn't constant so I changed it often, but I'm not sure the sync is totally correct.
Anyway, this song is Old Korean song about America.
My ratings:
+1 Common World Domination
+1 do the thing feat. Kanae Asaba
+1 Hello, Hello
+1 Hung Up
+1 Look Alike
+1 Neon Twilight
+1 Paradisus-Paradoxum
+1 海賊Fの肖像 (English ver.)
+1 Reverse
+1 Ride (feat. Ludacris)
+1 Stay Awake
+1 Suzy
+1 Tears
+1 Turn it Into Love
+1 Whenever, Wherever
HM Harmonia
HM Ponko2 Girlish (feat. Nanahira)
HM River

Coming to you live from my place of employment. AVI has just been added, so if you have downloaded the last ZIP and would like an AVI to accompany the file, feel free to download the AVI and the new .SM and bring those into the existing folder.
also someone may want to fix those last totals...i already spot a handful of errors :^o
