I miss the old days, where nobody had any clue what the titles of Pump songs were, and when people wanted to talk about a certain song, they'd refer to it by any random English word that showed up in the background video.

You could tell the maturity of a Bemani community back in the day by whether or not they called Sakura "Revenge."

I used to call Sakura "S" waaaaay back in the day just because it was in the S folder and that's the only way I knew to refer to it.

Remember when everyone used to name random techno songs they found on the internet "DDR Remix" even though the techno song had nothing to do with DDR?

But I was actually wondering if there's a controls/requirements "101" guide (in English) somewhere for DDR 2014, e.g.:
- what's needed to use .25x speed mods
- do you still hold the start button for mods
- what are the extra stage requirements
- is there a list of how to unlock songs

-You need Paseli to access the .25x increment speed mods.
-I believe so.
-Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's the same system as previous few mixes, minus event songs. You need Paseli as well to access this.
-Just read through this thead, you'll find the answers.

All this talk of classic DDR memories reminds me of when Butterfly beginner was the hardest stepchart on DDR Extreme (it still is the hardest stepchart ever, IMO).

I usually got help from Remywiki or by searching multiple threads here. A full guide for those not used to the Japanese menus would be nice.

As for the .25 speed mods, I think you need Paseli if you're in Japan. I'm in Korea, so we just have them by default. I set them with the menu buttons as the song begins.

EDIT: Oops, I got beaten to the punch.

My classic DDR memory is constantly getting a D on After The Game (Of Love) on Konamix. I was 5 years old too.

When I visited the arcade today, I made a quick list of the sorting options for those that can't read Japanese (like myself)

Light Blue: Sort by genre
Purple: Sort by popularity (Machine Best, etc)
Dark Blue: Sort by difficulty
Orange: Alphabetical sort
Green: Sort by personal best score
Pink: Sort by first mix the song appeared in

The other sort options have Roman numerals in them (BEMANI Series, BPM, etc). Maybe that can help when you're making your guide.

Okay so let's see...

there's two mode, PREMIUM MODE and NORMAL MODE. in Japan, PREMIUM MODE is accessible with PASELI only. elsewhere, PREMIUM MODE is available at a higher price in comparison to NORMAL MODE.

what do you get for playing PREMIUM MODE:
-access to various new options
-ability to gather stars and therefore, EXTRA STAGE and consequently EXTRA ATTACK. X3's ES accessing system is still in effect here, excluding groove radar bonus star.
-ability to play songs you unlocked via EXTRA ATTACK (yes, they disappear in NORMAL MODE)

then, the song select screen → http://p.eagate.573.jp/game/ddr/ac/p/images/howto/song.jpg
at first, you get the display like the left one. press 00 on the keypad to switch it to the right one.
1 → difficulty list, 2 → groove radar display, 3 → scores list (personal, machine, area, eAmuse bests + rival scores)
unlike X3/DDR2013, you don't have to close the current folder to open another folder. but you get to access other sorting methods without hitting ◀+▶ (so it's like IIDX without the whole hiding other folders when a folder is open).
some of the sorting methods: ジャンル (GENRE), ヒットチャート (HIT CHART aka play count list), 曲名 (song name), バーション (series list) and others like difficulty sorting, BPM sorting, rival score comparison sorting, etc. you can still change sorting with ◀+▶.

you can open the option panel several times (still by holding start/center button). either when you select the song or when you select the difficulty. you can change the difficulty with ⇧⇧/⇩⇩, but you're always presented with the option to change it after selecting the song (and also in the options panel). if you hold the start button when selecting the difficulty, after confirming your options, you are returned back to the select difficulty screen.

here's the option list → http://p.eagate.573.jp/game/ddr/ac/p/images/howto/option2.jpg

from top to bottom, they are: SPEED, ARROW MOVE (OFF/BOOST/BRAKE/WAVE), APPEARANCE, TURN, DARK, SCROLL, ARROW (VIVID/FLAT/RAINBOW/NOTE), CUT, FREEZE ARROW, JUMP, SPECIAL ARROW (NORMAL/X/CLASSIC/etc), SCREEN FILTER, GUIDELINES, HARD GAUGE.
the new things are
[SPEED] 0.25x, 0.5x, 1.25x, 1.75x, 2.25x
[GUIDELINES] OFF, BORDER, CENTER
guideline border:
http://puu.sh/aIApI.png
guideline center:
http://puu.sh/aIArQ.png
[HARD GAUGE] OFF, LIFE4, RISKY
LIFE4 uses the usual EXTRA STAGE lifebar. you don't get to continue to the next stage if you fail while using LIFE4 so be careful. RISKY is the previous RISKY ON option.
the new speedmod options and LIFE4 are only available in premium mode.

new result screen → http://p.eagate.573.jp/game/ddr/ac/p/images/howto/result.jpg
use ◀/▶ on the corresponding side to change the pages: clear status, detailed results, rival scores, calories burned (in that order)

currently the songs unlockable on EXTRA ATTACK are the TAG's birthday songs, current EXTRA ATTACK songs, Idola (have to unlock from BASIC~CHALLENGE, one difficulty per credit)... not sure about BEMANI Stadium but IX Challenge is there. Past event songs (BEMANI Gakuen, Triple Journey) are unlocked via play count, one song per credit, then the challenge charts (per credit too).

if you play the "SEALED" difficulty on EXTRA ATTACK, your "SURVIVED" gauge gets filled up to roughly how far you got in the song (half-full if you failed right in the middle and so on). the number of lives you have is irrelevant (i.e. clear the song in one try with one life left = directly unlock it). fill the gauge completely and you unlock that song's difficulty (and all difficulties below it if you haven't done so). SINGLE and DOUBLE are separate.

let me know if i missed anything or if anything's unclear.

At least i'm not the only one today who can't read most of the actually kanji they have for the DDR Machines herte in japan. I do wish I can read them all. Espically to choose another character

you do this after you sign in to your card (the screen when your dancer name, enjoy level etc shows up). if you press the center button it'll bring you to select play mode. press left/right to access other options like rival/play area browser/character select/calorie settings.

on top of what ICNH mentioned, playing with RISKY or LIFE4 nets you additional stars, and playing with another person (i.e. VERSUS) makes it easier to reach EXTRA STAGE. details are yet to be known.

Oh that's what everyone on Twitter was going on about? I heard something about stars being placed differently on the results screen or something, and also something about versus, but I wasn't sure exactly what people were talking about.

realistic note i'm honestly surprised this is going to get on DDR, and really I have no clue what to expect from the chart.
