It's really not going to be something to congratulate, the government successfully conned a country into believing that their problems were the fault of the boogeyman of the EU.

It's too early to call, and there's no sign what we're going to do once we're out, but I think we're probably fucked.

Well, I hope you guys in the UK are able to manage this. The pound apparently dropped in value by 11%, becoming less than what the US dollar is worth.

So, can I ask why UK wanted to leave the EU and how it all started?

There's a party called UKIP who work under the pretence of wanting Britain to leave the EU, whereas in reality they're just a bunch of old racists wanting to purge the country of foreigners, which they say are let in freely by the freedom of movement guaranteed by the EU. They're politically right like the main party of the UK (Conservative) and quite a few Conservatives had defected to UKIP before the most recent general election (2015). The Conservative Party, needing a way to court back support from UKIP voters in order to gain a parliamentary majority, promised an in/out referendum on EU membership if they were elected. This despite the fact that much of the party's leadership, including Prime Minister David Cameron, did not want to see it happen and actively campaigned against it. In fact, Cameron announced his intention to resign after this result went through.

UKIP is 90% bankrolled by Conservatives, so it's effectively a Trojan Horse party which surprisingly the lower class vote for because the leader drinks beer, smokes, and doesn't like foreigners who aren't his German wife. And thanks to the majority of print media (which is still a BIG thing here) being owned by people with their hands in the pockets of the Conservatives, the spin that's painting them as politicians that actually care about people who weren't Oxford educated is laid on so thick it's kinda impressive how many people they're managing to con. So whenever there's an election to change that, the newspapers band together to lie to the public and they get put in again to strip more money and rights from the people.
