"Elsewhere known as borealis"
[Girls Week] File #1
https://zenius-i-vanisher.com/simfiles/Z-I-v%20Summer%20Contest%202016/%5BGirls%20Week%5D%20-%20River/%5BGirls%20Week%5D%20-%20River.png?t=1468352736
River / Bishop Briggs
BPM: 125 (with swells and stops)
Rated Beginner 1 | Light 3 | Standard 6 | Heavy 7 |
X-Rated Beginner 2 | Light 5 | Standard 9 | Heavy 11 |
A current alt rock hit, with a swing.
The file uses tempo swells and stops, all marked with mines.

Not around here too often anymore, but I still play DDR & maimai!
My final contest run was in my signature so I guess I'll keep it here for those who wanna play my last few charts:

So I found out the .SM file in "Hello, Hello" only has one chart and it seems the simfile uses Split BPM. This means only the .SSC file is saved and not the actual .SM file. This may not be a problem for those using SM 5, but it will be for those using previous versions of Stepmania.

Anyone know how to fix this issue?

UPDATE: Found the problem why it causes the split BPM to occur. I used Step Timing instead of Song Timing so it caused a mishap in the simfile. Will update the simfile now. Nvm did not fix it yet

I decided I'll just remake the simfile instead. I can't seem to find where the split BPM is initiated, even from looking at the raw files. I'll update it once it's done.

Suzy / Caravan Palace

Beginner 1/2 Light 3/4 Standard 5/7 Heavy 8/11 Challenge 10/15

Bonus points for a song title that's also a girl's name? Tongue

Anyways, for electro swing there's a surprising lack of swing in the steps. Just a handful of 64ths near the end (Challenge only) and that's it. I'm actually kinda disappointed.

Can we arrange it so there are weekly download packs? It will get tedious downloading files one at a time.

Also, is there a file size limit, such as for videos?

I can gladly offer to fetch all of the week 2 simfiles and put up zips of them (probably groups of 100 MB). I kinda agree that downloading the files individually gets pretty tedious.

Last night, I stopped right after Don't Let Me Down. Today, I resumed on the song right after, which is Give Me Up.

I don't know if it's my setup or what, but it felt a bit off. Maybe it was offsync, maybe it was some patterns, but otherwise the Expert chart is fine.

I tried playing Challenge and Edit, but I just couldn't. I think it fucked up my hand for the night. Maybe if I played using two pairs of letter keys rather than the arrow keys it would be fine, but still. I hope you weren't expecting me to play it on pad. Blushing

Sorry for venting, I just had to get it out. Not saying there's anything wrong with the file (besides the offsyncness- which might be me or my setup because everything seemed to be off, even my own file). I'm just saying I can't play it, and therefore I won't have a rating for it when I post my reviews.

Anyway, my votes should be coming tomorrow.

Alright, here goes (and thanks to brunobg24, mf32892, and hooky for the feedback Smile Great job to all the simfile artists!)

Votes:

+2 ID (ddrstepper)
+2 Let’s Celebrate (DDR DAIKENKAI)
+2 This Girl (Astroman129)

+1 Candy Dash (xXMokou98Xx)
+1 Castle of Dreams (Pandemonium X)
+1 Lato I Mori (Lisek)
+1 Like A Nameless Flower (mf32892)
+1 Let's Dance Boys! (The Legendary DJXYZ)
+1 PLS GO FAST (darkanine)
+1 PRIME (ddrstepper)
+1 ShibuyaK (brunobg24)
+1 Violent Arcade (Gameoson)

And comments:
Backyard Animals - some steps seem unplanned and lead to uncomfortable spins, feels late towards end

Baelfire - steps flow and sync nicely, especially 12ths and 24ths; expert is a whole different animal (not a fan of hands in general, but that’s more personal taste)

bassamenco - good gallops and overall sense of flow; the streams on expert fit nicely with the song as well

Blue-bird hansel und Gretel - good flow and use of trills, steps get early as song progresses; nice intensity on expert with the 12th streams

Candy Dash - great flow; streams and jumps fit with song’s fast pace

Castle of Dreams - great flow, danceable song, with nice 16th patterns sections

Cheat Codes - fun song, good use of gallops, jumps, and 16th patterns

Clear (feat. Mothica) - streams are fun to follow, and the freeze-while-you-step patterns and jumps go well with the song

Destiny Bond (Lavender Town Glitchhop Mix) - nice flow and gallops

Don’t Let Me Down - bpm changes are a nice touch, and nicely stepped overall

Give Me Up (Happy Grandale Music) - good upbeat song, and the hard steps bring me back to the MAX days - just good ol' 8th streams for most of the ride

I Just Wanna See You - well-planned steps with nice music video to boot, although it seemed to get late later in the song

I’m an Albatraoz - interesting song choice (dat bass tho); nice emphasis on the galloping beats, although I feel there's one mid section that’s a tad bit early

ID - the steady influx of steps go well to the song’s driving beat; this one garnered several plays out of me (those bpm tricks are tough, but go well with the song)

If the Rain Falls (red monster hyper mix) - great 8th streams, and the step-step-jump patterns fit the song as well

Is the Sunrise Coming - simple and clean, with some fitting 16th trills

It’s All About Me - well-planned chart with plenty of good freestyle opportunities, and a music video to boot

Lato I Mori - nice, steady flow of steps that match the fun upbeat tone of the song. Music video is great too

Let’s Celebrate - the steps and gallops fit tastefully into the song, and the transition into the music video is nice (also Ratchet and
Clank are welcome any day in my book)

Let’s Dance - nice steps that fit the funky beat

Like A Nameless Flower - it’s a tricky 8, but the steps fit and have a good flow (but the stop in the middle threw me off the first time aroundl)

Lush Life - Steady chart and good flow, and the beginning arrows fit the claps quite well

Maybe (We Should Call It A Day) - A good, challenging ITG-style 9, although personally I’m not a fan of steps that go too literally with songs with vocals - there were some that were stepped to a T with certain syllables that I felt weren’t necessary to step (the ones with the 12ths or 32nds)

MY D*CK - Great steps to a great song. That channel is underrated, btw.

七転び八起き - nice flow with fun gallops and evenly balanced on both sides; the expert chart has satisfying-to-hit streams for a nice challenge

Not Tonight (Ladies Night Remix) - laid-back chart with a good flow; could even be a 6

Oh My Darling Don’t Cry - it’s a nice change of pace; the chart is challenging and evenly balanced

PLS GO FAST - the steps and bpm changes fit the theme and mood of the song; pretty decent overall

PRIME - the steps flow well with the song and matches certain sections well (particular the parts with the crossover streams)

Revolution - nice flow and balanced chart; the streams and random 16ths on expert are a nice challenge as well

Schizophrenia - chart overall fit well with the song’s musical elements - particularly the freezes for the long held guitar notes and the streams for the drums and guitar riffs

ShibuyaK - great flow, and the step patterns fit appropriately with the music; loving this one

(hm)So Young So High - Step patterns and bpm changes fit nicely with the song

SQUAD - nice flow, with dem flavorful bpm gimmicks; nice incorporation of rolls and bombs in the expert chart

Stop the Rock - nice steady chart with good flow and fitting patterns; the expert counterpart is more involved with streams and adds a good challenge

Strapped For Cash - lots of effort put into its presentation (studying the crap out of how you did the intro for that); great flow and interesting patterns (like the freeze-while-stepping sections)

TRY - good flow, nicely balanced; the expert chart does a nice job of highlighting the more subtle musical notes/elements in the song

This Girl - really great! very balanced chart, flows super well, and makes great use of 16ths to highlight to guitar and other parts of the song

Time, Love, and Tenderness - nice flow for both hard and expert, although the steps feel early

Violent Arcade - this week’s boss song haha. But dang, did it wake me up. And tire me out. The bpm tricks fit the chart, although being able to memorize them is a story for another time. And forget about those trills. Overall a beast of a simfile.

(It’s) For Your Eyes - A nice challenging ITG-style 9; it’s balanced and flows nicely

If you're making a debut in a simfile contest it's actually a good start. Heck, my first three attempts ended with nul points for every file I competed with.

That being said, I don't think I can make a file for this theme... Sad

So, for today I'm breaking the rules.

No, not actually, but I'm bringing you a song with a totally opposite name to this week's theme:

http://zenius-i-vanisher.com/simfiles/Z-I-v%20Summer%20Contest%202016/%5BGirls%20Week%5D%20-%20Big%20Boss/%5BGirls%20Week%5D%20-%20Big%20Boss.png?t=1468445317

Big Boss - Big Boss

BPM: 163
Singers: Luca Torchiani (Not sure) and Stefania Martin
Beginner 2 / Light 4 / Standard 6 / Heavy 8

So... that's it. I'll try to focus on finishing my second file rather than voting since I actually don't know if I'll be able to continue submitting files. I reinstalled Windows and I forgot to save one of my music folders and I don't have any GFX edit program installed yet.
No signature. I forgot where I put the actual image.

If I wouldn't give points to it myself, I shouldn't upload it. So as a bonus track for [Girls Week], I'm uploading Fire Fire by Flyleaf to my dumping grounds.
Hold on, why would I do that to a good song? If you had no ideas for this week, go ahead and use Fire Fire by Flyleaf, it's sung by a girl and you'll probably do a better job stepping it than I did.

Anyway, here's my second song.
Bury It (ft. Hayley Williams) / CHVRCHES
BPM: 100
Rated Beginner 1 | Light 3 | Standard 5 | Heavy 8 |
X-Rated Beginner 2 | Light 5 | Standard 8 | Heavy 12 |
Doubling the girl power, Lauren Mayberry and Hayley Williams team up on vocals for this rising synthpop hit.
Standard and Heavy ratings are debatably higher. If you agree, please say so sooner than later.

Not around here too often anymore, but I still play DDR & maimai!
My final contest run was in my signature so I guess I'll keep it here for those who wanna play my last few charts:

I did my best to create that a classic old scale 7-footer feel on expert, but made sure challenge matched the swing beat of the song, so expect 24ths and more complicated patterns.

So, here's some feedback for this weeks' files. This more almost exclusively criticism, there were 44 files this week and, well, reviewing them all took a lot of time. As a result, I wasn't as nice in the writing because being nice tends to take more words (sorry I'm just super busy and really shouldn't even be here!), but this batch is much better than the batches I reviewed two SCs ago. Note that when I say "do this" or "remove this" I mean for them to be suggestions, it's just that writing "It might be a good idea" takes a lot of words and its easier to just make this note in this preface. Anyways, here's some reviews. My votes for this week are at the bottom. Reviews are for the hardest singles difficulty in any chart.

Backyard Animal:

Beginning at the last lyric of the first stanza is slightly awkward, there’s no clear reason for the song beginning at 16.000.

Everything up until 26.500 works until right then, because you follow a blend of the percussion and the vocals, but then at 26.500 there is neither. You seem to be stepping a string but this changes mid-measure and is hard to follow.

I like your use of stops.

The up hold at 32.000 could work if it were intended to be a 270, but the LDRULDRLD pattern ends up containing multiple unforced doublesteps. Then, at 36.000, one would expect a tap to match the percussion that you still follow until this point. The patterns following this hits either an unforced doublestep or a really complicated set of turns and twists by 41.000. There isn’t much else to say that’s new until 68.000 following this.

61.000, 65.000 and 69.000 and so on follow a clear instrument, but your hold at 67.500 breaks this rule. I think that this idea works but it needs to be applied in a consistent manner.

I’m not big on this down tap at 91.000. It starts with a jump, making the step ambiguous, and that would be fine if the next step didn’t potentially force a doublestep. It’s not a big deal since this song is so slow and there is so much time but it feels awkward to me.

Why is 98.000 a jack when no other ending note of these triplets is also a jack?

Attempting to follow the steps following M25 would force the player to trip by 108.000.

132.000 would resolve to a difficult 270 and that’s not too great here, even if a player did it they would have to do something to hit 134.000. All of the patterning here feels very improvised or random, and 149.500 has this issue as well.

So, in a lower difficulty this would be fine but 160.500 and so on should be at xxx.667, this is a 12th note swing and you may want to do anything you can to justifiably add difficulty when you have an expert chart that is an 8.

168.000 doesn’t go to anything.

These jumps in the M50s go on extremely peaceful notes, it seems like this is asking for more movement than the rest of the song despite having the calmest music.

That is about all I have.

Bassamenco

I don’t blame you for using the 12ths at 44.000, but they aren’t correct. Without going into sub-64th quantization, the closest that I could get was moving 44.000 to 44.125, leaving 44.333 where it is and moving 44.667 to 44.750.

I like the first staircase at 45.000 but I think that the patterning should be more varied to match the different pitches following about 45.750.

90.000 doesn’t sound right, you have your rhythms as xxxx-xx-xxxx-xxxxxx-x, I think that x-xxxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxx is more accurate. This applies to identical rhythms for the rest of the song.

Remove 151.250 and 166.500.

These 16ths at M43 and M44 are nifty but the transition with the holds is rather rough, try transitioning to a different instrument to make this flow.

At 250.250 you start doing improvised gallops. Listen to the music slowed down and you’ll find that a lot of these taps don’t have any sounds to match them, even if it really feels like they should.

There are a lot of cool rhythms in here but I think that rhythm fidelity and using more varied patterns than staircases are the biggest points of potential for this chart.

Hansel and Gretel

Missing tap at 28.500. Same for 32.500. Some missing 16ths as well, such as at 90.750. There are many good ideas in this chart but I think that they could be improved if you made sure that you stuck to percussion that you previously stepped.

I think that there’s a doublestep somewhere around 127.500, you definitely can’t hold this crossover and hit 129.500 (at least, you’d be asking a lot more out of the player than you had been for the previous 45 seconds).

Not big on the ambiguous steps at 148.250 but I’ll credit for using stomps!

Using holds to accent the… cries of children (???) was a nifty idea.

I don’t think that 206.750 goes to anything.

232.500 doesn’t really work as a jump or a stomp. A crossover stomp involves turning a heel something like 200 degrees and the natural inclination of a player exiting a jump would be to hit 233.000 with the right foot, and it needs to be the left foot for anything afterwards to make sense. Same goes for 241.000 and so on.

Candy Dash

This starts out really hot but 36.000 should have a step.

The jacks at M33 work because the pitches of the notes are the same, but at M35 this isn’t the case and using different directions may be better here.

Taps at 152.000, 155.000, 226.000, 280.000, 312.000 and so on?

295.000 is ambiguous in a manner, the player will want to use their right foot to hit 295.500, and that will result in an extended crossover and then a doublestep.

Sometimes you use the same two jumps in a row, such as at 309.500, even though they go to notes with different pitches.

Castle of Dreams

I have no complaints regarding rhythms, but I have concerns regarding patterning. Sometimes the steps require little motion, sometimes they require a lot of motion, and it is never really clear why the amount of motion being called for is what it is at any point of the song. For example, at 231.500 and on you face right a lot, and there is little motion, but at 244.000 you start having crossovers and changing directions a lot, and the music in these sections is basically identical. I’m glad that you did such a good job following the rhythms – and you had the very rare, actually justifiable 16th note gallop – but I could not spot the rational behind the rhetoric of the steps.

Cheat Codes

The rhythms are good but the step rhetoric is inconsistent at places. I really like how you use jacks on steps like 106.000 but, just previously, the 102.000 both was not a jack and entered a crossover. The amount of motion being called for, in instances like this, doesn’t match the music. You employ pitch relevance well in some parts, such as the crossover 166.750, but other parts could be improved.

The rhythms after 145.750 are incorrect, although close. Be careful and slow down the music if you have to, because beginning at 145.000 the rhythm is actually x—x-xx-x.

Not sure what is going on at about 156.000, but 158.000 you enter what becomes an unforced doublestep and this doesn’t seem intentional.

Not big on how 160.000 and 159.000 are both down notes when the pitch of the notes is so different, consider moving 160.000 to the left arrow and adjusting the steps accordingly, maybe you can still salvage the crossover.

While I won’t provide any specific recommendations on stepping the ending, the percussion at 190.000 is simply too aggressive not to be stepped.

Other than this, you used crossover, footswitches and the like and that’s cool. Surprised this was the first Nitro Fun upload.

Clear ft. Mothica
I see why you have a down-tap at 27.500 but I advise against it, what you’re doing at first isn’t obvious and, honestly, I’m not sure that emphasizing a shriek like that is a good idea.

The repeated down/up steps in M12 doesn’t really match the changing pitch of the music here.

53.750 and similar steps don’t go to anything, while there are missing taps at 66.250 and other places. I would slow down playback and listen really carefully to this section. To be perfectly honest, 75.000-76.000 are particularly egregious, and many of the rhythms following it seem improvised.

142.000 is particularly awkward because you spend a lot of time previously doing down-left crossovers, and this jump may lead the player into an erroneous crossover.

Colors

Normally I’d ignore doublesteps in such slow charts, but the one here at 88.000 is a problem because you lead into it with a hold.

I do suggest making the player move more when the pitch changes more, and less when the pitch changes less. For example, 98.250 and 99.000 are both down notes, even though they have noticeably different pitches.

The holds at 183.000 and 187.000 work because they go to one held note, but 191.500 would be better off stepped because it is not the same here.

Destiny Bond

Holy **** this is actually a thing haha

Glitch hop like this can be hard because there is little difference audio-wise between a 4-note 24th trill and an x-xx gallop. 33.667 should have a note, for example. More pertinently, I’m not sure why segments like 34.833 aren’t gallops, the percussion is a lot louder than many other instruments that you stepped, such as 37.333. There isn’t much else to say about this, I can’t really follow how the rest of the song is stepped in this regard because it seems to change regularly. That said, the end has noticeably less missed percussions. The only different piece of feedback that I have is that I’m not sure what 12.750 goes to.

Don’t Let Me Down

You start off by blending percussion and vocals, but then 15.250 and 15.500 are unstopped, and this is puzzling.

These five notes from 55.000 to 56.000 sound like they should have four notes, with one of them being a separated 32nd. Same mistake at 151.000.

Move 67.250 to 67.750.

These 8th notes starting at 77.500 are RLRL, even though the pitch changes with each note.

Missed note at 81.500 and, well, many other places in this section, such as at 102.500.

After the speedup you seem to start using jacks, crossovers and jumps in random locations, with no consistency or rhyme to them, and it makes this part of the song seem rather chaotic.

Nearly all of the last four measures of the song face to the right exclusively, the chart would feel more balanced if you changed directions somewhere in the middle of here (M53).

Give Me Up

Honestly, I can’t review this in full so I’ll just give snapshots representative of what I object to.

58.000 leads into a doublestep. This could be resolved as a crossover footswitch at 59.500 but that would be ridiculous given how straight-forward everything prior to this random moment would be.

47.500 to 48.250 constitutes a candle, even though there is no change in the pitch of the instrument. That the motion required of the player doesn’t match the pitch would be more ignorable were it not for the fact that the rhythms don’t match the song either. 66.500, for example, should actually be at 66.750. Streams later appear in random places. Chorus streams aren’t always a bad thing, but they should be applied consistently; there is no reason to have a stream at M23. You later start copying and pasting streams, which does work when the streams match identical parts of the music, but these copied sections are too long and the result is a series of streams that don’t bear any relationship to the music.

Lastly, there is no step at 284.000 and this seems to be an accident. Please double-check charts to avoid simple mistakes like these.

I Just Wanna See You

Possible missing tap at 51.250, 55.250 and so on? Same for 63.250. These do seem to be relatively consistent but they are pretty blatant vocals and ignoring them breaks the flow somewhat.

Why does the hold at 102.000 cut off before 103.500?

128.000 is a bit ambiguous but it’s likely to lead to a doublestep. Moving the tap to the right column might help here.
Some of the steps get questionable after 112.000. For example, 116.500 might be more fitting at 116.667. The synthetic instrument is quiet but I think there are some swings in here.

The twists at 178.000 are the best thing I’ve seen this week so far (and I review these in alphabetical order). Very nice!
190.500 lacks vocals and, while it has percussion to match the step, a lot of the other percussion is unstopped. This seems slightly arbitrary.

I’m not sure what 224.500 is meant to go to, same goes for 228.500.

Move 230.250 to 230.000. Same with moving 234.250 to 234.000.

Remove 237.750, 238.250 and 238.500 and just add one tap to 238.000.

I’m an Albatraoz

Why does 39.000 not extend all the way down to 40.000?

There are a number of doublesteps, but they’re generally forgivable given how easy the song is. That said, there are also some ambiguous steps. The best example is at 138.000, which will make the player do a doublestep if they don’t telegraph the implicit footswitch beforehand. The section beginning at 236.000 is also very ambiguous once the 12ths start.
Some steps seem a bit deaf to the pitch. 164.667 and 165.667 have different pitches in the locations where the gallops are, yet the RD pattern repeats.

Why is 273.000 not a jump?

I think that 80.500 and 81.500 should have steps, because you layer in the vocals all up until this point and then you stop right before the stanza ends.

Why do these 16ths stop at 126.000? Shouldn’t they extend down to 128.000?
Missing tap at 129.000.

Cool chart overall!

If The Rain Falls

I have very little to say about this chart, really. There are some ambiguous/doublesteps but they’re all fair for the difficulty and relatively slow tempo. That said, a lot of the sections felt improvised. For example, 173.500 lacks a note when equivalent sections have a tap there, and the same rhythms/instruments are inconsistently stepped in the same sections. 208.000 also looks like it engages the player in an extended crossover, but they are eventually forced to doublestep by 214.500 and its rather jarring.

Is the Sunrise Coming

This is hard to judge because so much of the song is really quiet but there are some notes like 74.500 that should be moved up a quarter beat.

This isn’t criticism, but one way to add a tiny bit more variety is to put jumps on harsh percussion in sections otherwise surrounded only by whole beats (such as 133.000).

It’s All About Me

Missing tap at 54.750. Same for 118.750.

Shouldn’t 62.500 be on the vocal at 62.750? Same for 126.500 and so on.

There isn’t really much that I can say about a six but there were some cool ideas in here.

Iya hon no uchuu

I get that you want to start stepping the more complicated percussion at 58.000 but, right then, you also start stepping the vocals. Given the… really easy nature of the previous three measures I think that this sudden switch is excessive.

Move 121.250 to 121.000. Same with the congruent gallops later.

I suggest moving 132.000 to the left column but this is really nitpicky.

197.000 should have a hold to remain consistent with the hold four measures earlier.

Pretty nice job, this has some interesting rhythms.

Last Mint

Why are 147.500 and 163.500 unstepped? The instrument you were following is just as audible here.

A lot of this chart make the player face right for an extended period of time. You may want focus more on what direction you are calling for the player to face and writing steps accordingly.

Lato I morza

Move 95.000 to 95.500.

The patterns at 48.000 and 144.000 are identical, and the pasting/mirroring was already obvious from the pattern at 32.000. I don’t have a problem with this technique but I would take the patterns at 48.000 and swap the up and down columns. This would be the most effective way to mask the copying.

Other than these two things, the chart is pretty well done albeit a bit repetitive.

LET’S CELEBRATE

I’m not quite sure what is going on with the holds at 88.000. How the rhythms are stepped as a whole isn’t really clear in many sections of the song, but to illustrate, shouldn’t there just be one long hold from 87.500?

144.000 will lead the player to step with their right foot, which will lead to a doublestep. This part seems a bit ambiguous as a result.

199.500 and 200.000 force the player to make a 180-turn in a small amount of time and this seems quite difficult compared to the rest of the song.

Let’s Dance, Boys!

I think that this chart gets a bit happy on the holds. 56.000 makes sense, because the sax (?) clearly has a held note, but the same cannot be said for 56.750 and 57.500. Then there is 59.500, and I’m not sure why that isn’t a hold, since it is the longest-held instrumental note so far.

Missing tap at 83.500.

129.750, 132.750 and so on don’t really go to anything. Same for 185.750.

Like a nameless flower

Move 72.000 to 72.500.

Why does 106.000 extend past the next hold, but 108.000 doesn’t extend down to the next note and 104.000 ends right at 106.000. How are you determining the lengths of your holds?

Missing tap at 171.500? That vocal is pretty loud.

Move 229.000 to 228.500.

Lush Life

Remove 40.000 and add taps to 39.250 and 39.750 if you want to match the vocals. Same thing in M14.

M18 doesn’t really follow anything consistently. It seems to most closely follow a blend of the vocals and keyboard but it still misses a lot of notes while adding superfluous one. That is, I’m not sure what this triplet at 74.500 goes to. Another example of this problem can be found at 104.000, where the xx-x-xx-x-x pattern doesn’t go to anything, but xxxx-xx-x-x would blend the vocals and keyboard perfectly. Then there is 147.750, in which you follow the vocals and then the whistle, but this note is left unstopped for no apparent reason.

Maybe

These 12th notes in the beginning should actually be quantized as 16ths, you had the right idea later in the chart.
Everything up until M29 fades in and out of following whatever instrument. That is, you change what you follow mid-stanza and the chart becomes hard to follow because it becomes detached from the music to a slight degree. For example, you follow this bass at 98.000 but then stop following it and fail to step it at 100.500. There is also the stream ending at 147.000, which ends even though the instrument it follows is still playing. On a similar note, you have this forced doublestep from the hold at 198.000 and I like this technique but, well, the riff actually doesn’t extend beyond the next note. Next there is this hold at 231.333. Personally, I would let the note extend down 2/3rds of a beat and abandon the jump at 232.000; that way the riffs here are stepped consistently.

My D_ck

This video encoding crashes sm3.95.

This x-x-x---x pattern at 22.000 doesn’t really follow the vocals, the vocals follow a pattern of x—x—x-x. There isn’t anything in the music at 22.500, for example.

All of the percussion before 64.000 is stepped, so having this unstopped breaks the flow of the chart.

The gallops end up being pretty fun in the second half of this song.

Nanakorobi Yaoki

78.667 doesn’t really go to anything in the music, even though all of the other 12th gallops do. Same for 80.667.
Move 94.667 to 95.000 and 95.333 to 95.667.

I know that 118.667 goes to the percussion, but this is being stepped selectively and you’ve been following the vocals for a while up to this point, and it may be better to remove it and mirror 119.000. Same goes for removing 145.667. 211.333 also doesn’t go to anything, but the rest of this guitar solo section is really good!

In the end, however, you start stepping the percussion more regularly, so I’d suggest putting a tap on 315.667.

Not Tonight

There isn’t much to say, this is a very easy song and I think that it’s very reasonable. One small change that you could make, just to add a little bit more variety to the chart, is to add jumps to lone 16ths on the harsher percussion. For example, 93.000 could easily be a jump, and it would fit because 95.000 is also a jump on the same percussion. 91.000 has that percussion but it is exiting a 91.000.

Actually, I realized later in the chart that you do this sometimes, I think it should be done at every opportunity, though. Really, this is well done for what it is. Good chart.

Oh My Darling

This chart has some fun sections when it follows the vocals accurately, but there are bits and pieces—such as at 68.000—where you seem to abandon following the vocals and step something else. It breaks the flow, and that is pretty distracting in a song with a lot of background noise and complicated vocal lyrics. The crossovers are pretty good in places where they are used consistently.

PLS GO FAST

Missing tap at 21.500.

That’s really all I have. Good speed changes, the section with the 24ths was cool and there was some good crossover usage. Nice work.

Prime

Move 60.500 to 60.250.

These 16ths at around 118.000, 134.000 and 151.500 are super quiet but if you are following it then perhaps you could put notes on 151.500 and 151.750 as well? Same for 167.500 and so on.

I think that the end could have more movement involved (ie. keep the taps and jumps but face different directions and such)
Overall this a pretty technically flawless simfile. Good work.

Revolution
Move 45.000 up to 44.500.

Remove 105.000.

Move 118.750 up to 118.500. Move 102.500 down to 120.750, 120.750 to 121.000 and remove 121.250. Same goes for the later gallops at the same rhythm.

Nitpick but I suggest moving 130.500 to the left column.

The vocal at 188.000 starts on beat, but this hold at 190.000 would then match a vocal that really starts at 190.500.

The rhythms at 196.000 aren’t really correct, the synth at 196.000 goes x---x—xx—xx-x, so on and so forth.

Not sure what 230.500 is following, unless it’s some faint background feature.

Schizophrenia

I don’t hear anything to match the note at 32.500. Same for 40.500 and pretty much every 8 measures onward.

It sounds like you should have a tap at 197.000 to keep up with the guitar.

228.000 is doable but it’s harder than anything else in the song. It’s even more demanding than the streams.
There isn’t anything audible at 289.250.

The percussion at 306.750 is stepped but there is a lot of other percussion, such as at 305.750, that is unstopped.

ShibuyaK

The beginning of the chart is consistent in how it follows the music right up until 102.500. This and 103.500 follows the base, but the base is ignored at all other times. Removing these steps may make the chart flow better.

Remove 116.750.

Consider removing 132.500 and making 132.000 a measure-long hold.

There is a lot of good stuff in this chart and little to complain about. Good work.

So Young So High

This twist rather comes out of nowhere. This is already the hardest part of the chart for the 16ths alone, making them twist as well makes for too much of a difficulty spike, in my opinion. That’s really all I have to say though, you did a fine job following the music, being consistent and so on.

Squad

You make your jumps pitch-relevant, you used mines well and my only complaint about how you followed the rhythm was that there were some bits where you used 16ths to mark extremely quiet percussion. Your use of rolls and stops were good too. My only real complaint is a vague one, and that is that your hold usage is a bit excessive. I know the temptation but 113/484 is a lot of holds and they generally did nothing but impose a cosmetic effect. The result would be score inflation, and I think that you could use less in order to make the chart stronger and less busy.

Stop the Rock

Adding holds to the end of 8th note bits such as at 83.000 would add some variety to the chart, which is important since the song is overall highly-repetitive (although somewhat fun, good work).

Strapped For Cash

This chart is pretty good, but some of how you stepped different instruments seemed to drift. For example, you step the synth toward the end, but 183.000 is unstopped. Similarly, you stepped a lot of the percussion that was close between vocals, but not identical percussion outside of vocals.

TRY

63.000 is a bit awkward unstopped because the percussion is audible and already in the middle of being stepped.
Not huge on this crossover at 24.000, there isn’t anything wrong with it but a player may be inclined to treat it as a doublestep and then be forced into a spin.

With crossovers, 64ths, footswitches and jump-holds, you do a lot to make this chart varied despite the music not having much going on at first glance. Great job!

This Girl

Missing vocal at 52.500.

Remove 130.500.

There isn’t anything else to critique in this chart, well done.

Time, Love and Tenderness

If 22.000 is a jump then shouldn’t 19.000 be a jump as well?

There isn’t really any reason to cut the hold at 30.000, it could extend down to 31.000. Same for future 3/4ths-beat holds.

Stepping 66.250 is probably not preferable because there are so many other instances of percussion being ignored now. That said, if you do then I wouldn’t make 74.500 a crossover. All of the other 16th-note triplets are simple relative to this one, and there isn’t anything different in the music for any of them.

Move 106.000 to 106.250, the rhythm is the same as at 110.250.

Violent Arcade

I’m doing this review differently than the rest and applying a much greater level of scrutiny because, well, this chart really deserves it. This is fun and it fills a good niche by being a more forgiving version of Winnipeg is Fucking Over, which is a great chart but which is also really hard. So…

Review Key: H1=Horizontal 1, H2=Horizontal 2, V1=Vertical 1, V2= Vertical 2, where H1 and V1 are the first horizontal and vertical columns used, respectively, and H2 and V2 are their mirrored columns.

These first patterns are cool and the fact that they resolve so that you can have all four possible combinations of H1--H2-V1-H2-V1-H2----H2--H1. This is cool but it leaves 35.000 and similar percussion unstopped. One way to step this would be by making the pattern H1—H2-V1-H2-V1-V2—H1—V1—H1 (for the first pattern this would be L-RDRDU-L-D-L) and applying this for future steps. This adds percussion and makes the low synth at 35.500 and similar locations call for more movement.

Optional steps could be placed at 57.500 and 58.500.

Remove 102.750 and place steps at 102.250, 103.250 and 103.750. Remove 183.250 as well (I think).

126.250 is quiet but it sounds like it contains the same instrument as all of the 16ths following it.

The wooshing at around 143.000 would be a cool place for stop gimmicks, as would all future wooshing sounds. Totally a cosmetic option, though.

152.250 and 152.750 sounds like they could use steps, but I’m not 100% sure what you’re following so I could be wrong.
Nitpick, but move 172.500 to the left column to balance the stream and just be slightly more forgiving for the following jump.
I like the gimmick at 197.000 but it’s really easy to screw up, I think indicating some of these gimmicks that change timing with something would be a nice gesture, but also a cosmetic one. That goes triple for the stop at 201.750 and somewhat less for 259.000. The breakdown after that could use some other form of indicator as well, because there is no way to sightread this at all and that isn’t everything, but it’s also a bit more cumbersome to learn than charts like Dancingbox (r21freak r2112). Silikon (also r2112) had this issue and the chart doesn’t hold up as well as a result.

I’m not big on the pattern at the start of this stream at 213.000. Most of it is fine but leading into it with that URURU pattern just after up and right arrows faces right a bit too much. There are a lot of different ways to resolve this but it’s not a huge deal. Same thing does happen at 362.750, however.

This stream pattern at 239.000 is super good.

Possible missing tap at 325.250. Same for 334.750. 398.750 doesn’t quiet sound like it goes to anything when slowed down.

Missing tap at 430.750.

The final bit is a bit unbalanced. Between 426.500 and M110 you have four LDUR sweeps, changing the patterning a bit to have some sweep left across the pad (RUDL) would fix this.

Good chart.

(It’s) For Your Eyes

The rhythms you use start being somewhat “feel the notes” at 44.000. You step the vocal samples but the claps are stepped only sometimes. 114.750 is another example, where the step doesn’t seem to match anything that had been previously stepped.
200.000 all the way to 209.000 faces right, I’d suggest changing directions up a bit because facing the same way too long gets distracting when the rest of the song is well-balanced.
