Spent over like 10 hours just trying to sort my sister's PC out and came to the conclusion it's the motherboard being a twat.
Random lockups resulted in me debugging the PC in a number of ways:
Try to reinstall Windows 7, locked up during installation.
Try to reinstall Windows XP, locked up during installation.
Taking out the graphics card, still locked up.
Taking out the second HDD, still locked up.
Taking out the main HDD, still locked up.
Removing all unnecessary components and peripherals, still locked up.
Changing various BIOS settings, still locked up.
Checking various cable connections, still locked up.
Swapping IDE cables, still locked up.
Swapping the PSU, still locked up.
Couldn't even update the BIOS due to the program needing a Windows OS to update it.
Moved the HDD to my old PC and lo' and behold, the installation and system works.
There's probably more stuff I've tried but just forgot.
I've never had this much trouble fixing a stupid PC, looks like the moral of the story is: never trust a motherboard that isn't a main branded one; always get ASUS, Gigabyte etc...
Anyone else had any sort of computer problems that they need to let steam off in this thread? Cos this has really ruined my weekend.

It might be just my computer, but I've always had issues with slow performance and crashing on Windows Vista.

Except for those occasional pop-ups and parental controls that suck and other few things on my end. ポスト #10 · 2010-01-11 08:48:06amにポスト 14.4年前

I used Vista for a good 2-3 years. Didn't really have too many troubles. Disabled UAC, disabled some other services I didn't use, choose classic theme, classic start bar setup, and I was good to go.
Just recently though, all of my programs started to lock up and it made it impossible to do anything...couldn't force kill any of the processes. I decided to just switch to 7 and things are working fine now. I like the way things work in W7 better too.
Vista isn't really that bad...not perfect, but not terrible as everyone makes it out to be.
On my laptop, I have Ubuntu 9.04 installed and I occasionally get random kernel panics. I think it may be a hardware configuration error since I know it's been a problem with 9.04...

I have a feeling most of the rage in this thread will consist of Vista complaints.
I have personally been using Vista for my main OS for about 10 months or so and there are things I detest about it and things I do like. Main thing I hate is all the pop-ups I get on the system nagging me about various things I SHOULD enable, but choose not to. Like UAC. It reminds me every freaking boot. I get it. Now shut up Vista. Next is some of the programs that I used like Picture IT '99 do not work due to its overprotective security. I am the admin on my PC. Shouldn't I be able to do things like certain programs that require Prompt to open? No. It treats me like a standard user
Now the only thing I actually like of Vista is the visuals. That's it.
My laptop is also somewhat of a pain. Even though it's one I bought in 2009, it's not the best. Processor speed is excellent, but not the graphics card. It's far from being that. Portal and TF2 are so laggy on my computer despite having every aspect of it set to low for video settings. Not to mention my laptop lags for 10 seconds every start up after I log in and Windows Media Player takes 10 seconds to load a song after a boot. What it's doing I have no clue. Lastly, it's doing something my old PC did: Take forever to load GimpShop. I literally have to wait 10 minutes or so
That's what happens when you don't look around and have a super tight budget

Surprisingly, Intel motherboards are actually good, though expensive compared to ASUS or Gigabyte boards of similar specs. I only built a machine with an Intel board once (in 2006) by request. Since then, I've used ASUS boards exclusively unless specifically requested. Also, after working with Windows Vista for 2+ years, I've grown to like it. That stupid User Account Control feature is annoying, though.

I've heard good things from Intel around the Internet. Laptops with Intel chipsets are not too bad either.
Windows Vista is only fine if you have plenty of RAM and CPU power to throw around, otherwise it runs like trying to run in snow.

Feh, Intel's motherboards are pretty bad for their value. ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI (MSI used to suck, now they're pretty much amazing) are pretty much the top tier brands (whereas EVGA is overpriced BS).
What processor are you using al2k4?

I'm using a 4 year old Dell with a Pentium D 2.80GHz, 2GB RAM, and an nVidia 6800GT. That being said;
Of course it wouldn't run Crysis at 60fps but I'm not a hardcore gamer.
For Picture IT, what exactly doesn't work? And for the 10 second delay on login, do you remember when this started? There's a bug in 7 that does this if you have no Wallpaper and are using a Solid Color. I think it's on some versions of Vista too.
-For everyone who complains about UAC-
It's true that UAC can be annoying, but you should really never turn it off unless your computer isn't connected to the internet. It's there for a reason. Yes, Microsoft is retarded for not including a way to exclude certain apps from UAC. I seriously hope this is released in Vista SP3 / 7 SP1 However, there's are workarounds.
An easy fix for this if you're on Vista still: http://www.symantec.com/norton/theme.jsp?themeid=labs_uac_download&header=0&depthpath=0
Install this UAC Replacement from Norton. It'll let you approve specific programs so that you won't ever see the prompts again for it. (Make sure UAC is ON before you install it!)
If you or anyone else is on Windows 7, sadly the above tool doesn't work and Symantec has no plans to create a 7 revision. For now, you have 2 good options:
1: (Perfect if you only run a few apps that prompt) http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/create-administrator-mode-shortcuts-without-uac-prompts-in-windows-vista/ (remove the shortcut quotes in Win7)
2: Be semi-unsecure and lazy - install this and use Quiet mode: http://www.tweak-uac.com/download/

UAC is a general nuisance to those who are already familiar with computers.
Like me, I turn it straight off on Vista and 7.
