I'm in
Theme ideas:
Slow song theme. Songs must be under 100 bpm
Fast song theme. Songs must be over 200 bpm
Boss song theme. Song must be a "boss song" style, rated 9 and up (old scale).
TV theme week. Song must have been popularized or created for the theme of the television series (NOT Japanese animation, American animation acceptable).
Classical/Orchestral song theme. Song must be a cover or remix of a classical or orchestrated song (see Turkey March, V, Polotsvan Dance and Chorus, etc)
Challenge chart theme. Edits of DDR songs that were given a rating of 7 feet or below (old scale, 10 or below new scale).
Amateur dj theme. Song must come from an amateur DJ that has not had any major releases or media appearances (i.e. Darwin and DM Ashura re not acceptable, DJ Bouche would be).
Gimmicks done right. Chart has to be gimmick based, speed changes, pauses, mines, rolls, hands, anything that's not "standard" DDR fair.

Don't be! Talk to a few of the other authors, and I'm sure they'll be able to give you tons of advice. I just entered my first contest, and even though I didn't really get much feedback on any of the files, everyone was happy to explain things like crossovers and double-stepping to me. I'm certain that my songs got better and better each week, and that's all thanks to people taking the time out to give me tips and advice along the way.
I've noticed that the rounds which let people copy songs from an OST without cutting them always get a higher number of entries than other rounds, so in order to get in as many entries as we can, I will cut songs for anyone who cannot do it themselves. Just PM me a link to the song you want to use, and I'll try and get a cut back to you ASAP.

It must have single- and single-, doesn't need anything else, although people sort of expect single- as well.

Obligatory I'm in from me.
No theme ideas for the moment as all the ones I could think of have already been stated. Do like the gimmicks done right one though.
Also major thanks for the advance notice that you will cut songs for us Tyma. I will definitely be using that since I suck at cutting songs.

Don't want to join in, sorry but i just don't seem to do the "simfile" thing
BUT, i can suggest themes:
Meme week:
Choose a "memetic" song and step chart it. As a bonus, add some magnets (mines or random shock arrows) for added effect.
Old-School Week:
Choose songs (hits or unheard) from the 80's and 90's and step chart it.
New Trance Week:
Pick any trance song that was released from January 2011 till May 2011 and step chart it.
Z-I-v Records Week:
Choose songs from our very own Z-I-v artists and step chart them (if that hasn't been done already).
Go GaGa Week:
Choose any Lady GaGa song and step chart it.
The Mau5 Week:
Choose any Deadmau5 track and step chart it.
Around The World Week:
Pick an international song and step chart it.
The Flying 50's Week:
Pick a 1950's song and step chart it.
Do You Remember....Week:
Choose a song from an artist(s) that no one remembers now, but did remember at one point, and step chart it.
Saturday Morning Tunes Week:
Pick your favorite Saturday Morning Cartoon Intro or Outro Song and step chart it.
New Artists Week:
Pick an up-and-coming artist, choose a song, then step chart it.
And now for a slight "twist" in themes:
Replicant-D-Zenius Week:
Choose Any RDA (or you can also choose a IIDX or DDR Boss song) and re-edit the step chart or create your own step chart. MUST INCLUDE CHALLENGE STEPCHARTS.
EVOLVED Week:
Choose any song, make three versions out of it, and step chart each version.
Can You Pass This? (a.k.a The 20 Footer) Week:
Choose any song and create the most diabolical step chart you can possibly imagine. HAS to be passable on pad (could be a problem though seeing that we have NO idea how bad and awful a 20 Footer would be...).
And that's all i can think of for right now, pick and choose, pick and reject, or pick and build upon the idea for that week's theme. Not going for a "GH DJH" week again, although it would be nice seeing that they won't be making anymore games, at least a "Hero Homage Week" to pay homage to "America's" best music rhythm series...and have songs from GH:WoR and DJ Hero 2 (DLC is acceptable too). But i know no one would give a rat's ass about it :/

The video game BGM theme all entries must be from another video game besides DDR or ITG.
(example: Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, or Whatnot, it can be anything other than DDR)

I don't have any specific themes to add, but I will add the general note that themes should be very wide. One of the problems with last year's contest was that we had generally wide themes that were offset by incredibly narrow and niche themes. If the contest is to be successful (assuming we correlate success with the number of participants), then a vast majority, if not all themes, should be very wide.
Examples of wide themes would include:
Free weeks (obviously)
Licenses
Non-English Songs
In addition, there are wide themes that actually don't encompass many songs, but still have enormous drawing power to people who would be entering the contest. An example would be BEMANI crossovers. While the number of BEMANI crossover songs would not even begin to reach the number of songs available for the themes above, those participating in the contest would be familiar with and, given that this is a BEMANI game fansite, actually like the songs.
Examples of non-wide themes would be pretty much any of the ones that Max proposed.
When thinking of themes, one should ask themselves "Does this theme include a vast enough array of songs that it would be relatively easy for a participant to find and select a song?" and "If this theme does not include a vast number of songs, would the theme have enough appeal to the participants to draw in as many participants as a theme that did include a vast number of songs would?". Remember, if someone skips one week, it is more likely for them to skip other weeks as well. We don't want to repeat the disaster of last year's contest, where Round 1 (DDR Edits) had 40 files and Round 2 (Video Game Remixes) had 11.
By the way, I would also suggest limiting the number of entries per round to one file.
Anyways, just my two cents.
