"Let's Do the Rain Dance" |
So, one of the issues that's recurred in the 2 and a half years of DDR A discussion (Wow, I can't believe it's been that long) is that sometimes there's just not much to discuss about the new mix. There's droughtful periods aplenty, and even when there's a big event, so many people will have already thrown their hat in the ring that your own opinion may seem trite. Most of us love DDR and especially talking about DDR, but when not chomping at the bit of the cutting edge, there hasn't really been a proper avenue for talking about the vast rest of the series here. Old mix threads are locked as they represent just the contemporary thoughts, and Let it Out has never given off the vibe for such discussion, welcoming instead more personal topics and humor. As such, I think now's about the time to rectify that: let's have a thread that can serve as that outlet to forment healthy activity on the forums as we do what we do best: chat about the series!
So that I don't end up doing basically nothing with this first post, I came prepared to shine a spotlight on some elements of the series that don't get much love or notice nowadays:
- Now that the smoke's cleared on the phone games, and they are for the most part discontinued, what are our thoughts on them, namely S+ and Dance Wars? Did their unique content and swath of ports and new licenses impress, or was the core of the concept flawed with the method of control?
- As DDR mixes have become more online-dependent, the lifespan of the mixes and their methods of dripfeed have slowed and altered. Which modern mix did you feel pulled off the anticipation and deliverance best? Personally, I'd say 2013 was one of the more enticing, with a healthy start, an unlock system to sink teeth into immediately, and plenty of exciting events over time.
- What was the best mission mode? *Is* there a good mission mode? In my opinion, the better modes seem to still have one of three major failings: whacked out difficulty curves (Extreme 2 has some very cruel missions scattered about that make the end-game bothersome), grinding (Ultramix 4's system would be almost perfect were it not for the excessive accumulation you have to do to get the boosts on songs/videos [of which there are about 700!] to get a proper completion of the game), or a lack of engagement (Hottest Party 3 had a fine mode and some cool cutscenes, but the actual gameplay didn't provide much in the way of challenge or objective).
I'd love to see what all of you end up discussing, hopefully in the long-term of the future!

In retrospect - since I never really did much arcade playing until Ace (I definitely had played on an EXTREME or two, and X2 in Disney Quest but that was few and far between) - I'd say of the modern mixes, X2 really delivered. It fixed all of X's biggest problems, including moving beyond the songwheel many may have nostalgia for but really did not suit such a large library of songs. It feels fun and bright to play, the songs really banged. I wish I could own specifically an X2.
Mission modes got more annoying as time moved on. X's mode is all of these ridiculous cutscenes just to play level 1 songs. Nothing good comes until hours and hours of playing stuff way below most player's level.

Fine I'll keep it short and sweet.
UNIVERSE2 is one of the greatest CS titles. Not many other games come close.

I think the Dancing Stage series gets overlooked a lot. There are actually some nice bangers to be found in Fever and Fusion such as Good Luck, Freak Like Me (...eh), SEXIEST MAN IN JAMAICA, Sunlight, Cool for Cats, and The Boys are Back in Town.

Agreed. IMO in terms of console titles it's
Universe 2 > DDR III (Wii) > Whatever PS2 title you grew up with

I really wish X2 PS2 was a better game. The Dice Master Mode was pretty bad to be honest

X2 was okay. Had potential. Glad to see some of those tracks finally making it to US shores, like MARS WAR 3 and the iconic remix of MY SUMMER LOVE. Plus DMM was an interesting concept. But overall X2 was just kinda mediocre. Also had many questionable omissions and I'll never wrap my head around a few of those revivals.Nowhere as bad as people make it out to be but a very sad ending to the chain of great PS2 titles.

But I don't quite think the DDR A thread is suitable discussion for older or underrated DDR/Dancing Stage mixes. Especially with drama such as the iamchris4life outrage sweeping by every now and then. .-.

Never played Universe 2, but damn I'm high on nostalgia for Universe 1 and miss a lot of those songs. How do you think UM2 compares to that?Post #19 · Publicado en 2018-08-29 01:40:21am Hace 5.7 años

- S+ was fun, just couldn't ever get used to the janky timing. Never got to play Dance Wars but I thought the concept had a lot of potential and it's unfortunate that it didn't last long.
- I only got to play it once, but I feel like X2 AC was extremely well rounded.
- I didn't like anyone of them to be honest, but Extreme 2's and Supernova 2's frustrated me the least if that counts for anything.
