Have you ever used some mods so much that if you don't use them, you start noticing a big difference in the way you play?
I just noticed that I have a major problem NOT using the Reverse mod. I can A or AA any song if the reverse mod is on but when I take it off, I start sucking badly. Occasionally to the point where I can't pass the song on Final or Extra Stage.
Thankfully this only applies to when I'm playing on the controller or keyboard. No reverse doesn't affect the way I play on foot (which is very, very odd).
Noticed this big time when I was trying to clear Boss Rush 1 on SuperNOVA CS. MAX300 (SMMM) hands me my butt every time >_<

I am so used to Rainbow and Note that I can't play well without them. Also I usually use 3x when I play ITG, so when I forget to turn my mods on or play Oni mode, I totally suck. You should be able to use speed mods on challenge courses--it shouldn't be a visual challenge.

but the whole point of oni mode is "regulation" play. no, i didnt pull that term out of my ass, go check endless mode.
anyway, i notice it in songs more than mods. for example, i normally play X3 solo/rainbow. i also play oni mode a lot, and as such i dont bother picking the songs in the courses i like because there is no point in playing them twice in one night. as such, i do better on the songs in happy hardcore(blondie girl, still in my heart momo mix, dynamite rave b4za beat mix, wakalaka, sweet sweet love magic) X1 vivid bar than i do X2 or X3 bar. i've SDGed blondie girl and dynamite rave in the course but cant get them under 15 in game mode. i have wakalaka under 20 in the course but not under 30 with mods, etc.
i guess its because i learn the songs the way i read them the most, because similarly to that, when i play courses i dont normally play with songs i normally use mods on, i get tons more greats.

I'm used to playing on Solo (Rainbow)/Note. I just do a bit better with them on.

I'm too used to 2x/3x speed and rainbow. That's why I always can't complete a challenge course (mainly due to speed mods).. >.<

I am too used to 2x and note.
But the note creates a problem when the background is red.

I can play with or without speed mods/solo, though it usually hurts my PA a little. There have been exceptions though, like the time I got 11g on Freckles modless or the other day when I AA'd My Summer Love on 1x Flat for the Extra Stage (lol). I used to have a 5th mix, so I had to learn modless play.
My problem is with Reverse, because I start misreading jumps and gallops... lots of good times at my old locked Extreme, trying to get to the halfway point in LOM ES and failing at around 30 seconds every time due to those gallops =/

Yeah, my PA becomes terrible if I don't play with x2. Or x4 if it's 100 or below.
And if a song has lots of 16ths, I have to use x3, even if it's at 150 or so, or I'll hit them at the wrong time, and fail if they're long clusters.
I also use Note, just because it makes it so much easier to predict the rhythm.
I think if I tried to do "Rhythm and Police" without x2, I'd fail. But with it, I can get an A. (always miss my combo somewhere random). The streams just get too confusing without x2.

I always use Rainbow and a speed mod on DDR.
On SM, I have to use Dark. When I don't have it on, the arrows seem a lot faster.

JunK: Stepmania has x4 as a speed mod. Also allows you to add any speed mod you feel like.
Lord Toon: I'd say there's nothing special about not using the bar unless you're doing 10s and above. I play 9's with no bar all the time, because I do not own a chair (I'm serious, I don't need one in my apartment, so I don't own one), and I don't go to the arcade.

difficulty doesnt matter, using the bar is a preference of play style and nothing more. i personally use the bar whenever possible, if you play for scores(which is the same as playing for fun if you find scoring fun, so shut up) youre stupid not to use it. there is nothing wrong with using the bar on a 7, there is no rule that it must be max300 or harder to use the bar. when i AAAed your rain on festival it was X5 bar. when i AAAed it on extreme US it was X3 no bar(cobalt flux for the lose). the faster speed and leaning back helped with my PA and my foot placement, i love it.
and before someone chimes in, i never played at arcades regularly untill after UM2 came out. i passed all the 10s released at that point in US, JP and xbox versions no bar on my CF, so i dont use the bar because i cant play, i use it because i can use it.
as for X4, its also in ITG. while ITG is just stepmania, its an official game and therefore you can find X4 in an arcade dancing game.

So, in stopping people insulting one way to play the game, you insult people who don't play like that!? Surely it doesn't matter how it's played.

I see using the bar (and my personal conviction as to why I use it or not) pretty much as n00b_saib0t put it, except I wouldn't have said it so bluntly. XD
I would say, it's a part of the game that's there, you can use it or not depending on how you feel. Someone who AAA's MAX300 is better than someone who black flags it without a bar, simply because the second person was dumb not to use the bar. Of course, it DOES often take more skill to play without the bar, but in the end your skill all boils down to that score the machine displays for 10 seconds after the song's over. The machine doesn't care that you would have barless AAA'd some song if it weren't for the 2pad misses, so we shouldn't care how someone else plays either.

Honestly, I do care how someone plays. If I see one person AAA a 9 or 10 with the bar, and someone else SDG (same song) without the bar, I'll be more impressed by the barless feat. I'll be impressed by both, but barless is more difficult, so it's more impressive to me. Same reason a stealth score is more impressive than a non stealth score (though not the same scale of difference).
That being said, I wish I had ignored it when the bar was mentioned. >_<
