Week 5 - Flash Back 90 Entry
https://i.imgur.com/2jFTpQU.png
170 BPM
Beginner 4 / Light 8 / Standard 13 / Heavy 16

Song cut originally by Mr.Music; yellow arrow syndrome fixed. Intro is modified a bit but overall flow is the same.
Depending on my mood I might actually put a Challenge in the contest entry within the week.

It's best not to over-complicate things. Besides, "how well the steps fit the song" can still be a personal opinion.

Honestly though with the way this contest has been going I'm just about ready to drop out altogether...

To VanEden/tak... I'm begging you to reconsider making weeks be split into two parts. This, no doubt, is a giant factor in why people like Oni and HealingDMax and MANY more feel like their files are doing poorly than usual. It may be convenient to only play 22 files instead of 44 but it's not worth the drama it's creating.

It should just be one week, one pack: This is how it's been done for YEARS. The most files I've ever played was 45, with 2016's Mid Speed (not counting mine, of course), and I was able to get done voting in the first day. And this was with playing just Heavy and Challenge. If you only judged off of the hardest difficulty... well... 2:30, the longest time limit, times 50, is about 2 hours and 10 minutes, plus you can add probably an extra 30 or 40 minutes as breathing room. Three hours tops.

I think everyone judging all of the files that were made for the week is important. This is one contest going on, why does it feel like it's two?

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I don't see how that would work out, since with half as many people in the groups you're really twice as likely to place in the top 10 with 20 people compared to 40.

I understand your personal experience may be that you have time, but with so many people that have a lot going on outside of this contest due to work. school, or the state of the world currently, it can't be said about everyone. I know you can't see this, but if you knew how many votes we get sent to us last second you would understand how different it would be if they were in that same rush but had to play twice as many files.

Because there really is two tournaments worth of people competing. And it isn't really comparable to call it two separate tournaments as the random mixing for the groups means you have an entirely different mix of players to the two groups each time. Also as it was discussed when we first implemented the two group decision we made a point to say that the second a week gets less than 40 files, we would be doing one group for that week. Please understand with the number of people signed up, in order to make it accessible to everyone, it simply isn't feasible to have everybody go through that many files on a weekly basis.

I'm glad you're concerned about this, but seeing as we have already implemented this system for 4 weeks now with no major issues, I believe the change is for the better, but it can be taken into further consideration for next year or other future tournaments. Thank you!

tl;dr it's my own fault for doing bad, not the voters or contest layout

I actually completely get why I'm doing poorly. When I play other people's charts, a lot of the time they feel so much more flowing, creative, and well put together than when I replay my own and the results reflect that often. I just can't seem to replicate what I find really good in my own charts.

It sucks that a couple or few years ago, I used to have more moments of high placing, even getting 1st place like twice. I've been consistently charting ever since but I can tell I've gotten worse mentally on top of it being reflected in the results. I used to have ideas for patterns springing into my head for a song as I went along but now what I put down just seems coincidental and "I guess that works". I'm still trying to find that same creatively motivated mindset that I had before. A little dramatic for just making ddr charts but it's a big hobby of mine that's on my mind more often than I'd like to admit. I'll just keep trying and hope I eventually make things that click with both me and you guys.

I mean, I consider not being able to vote for my actual favorites something of a major issue. I would have loved to vote for Toy, Make it Werk and The Blue, but oops, I'm not in that group, guess I can't vote for them because that's the rule Annoyed

To be clear I still enjoyed all of the files I've voted for, I just think it's dumb that I can't show support for a file at all due to what's effectively a coin flip.

Concerning doing one big pack, I think it's a bad idea. I personally am able to play all of the songs within a hour currently. I don't know if I have two hours to go over files all at the same time. For voting I need to do them all as one to be fair. -- Eurovision has 40 songs and they put it into 2 parts as well. The qualifiers get to be in the final. ;)

Point wise, I moved from 5,4,3,2,1 voting to 3 being the highest for me so I can spread out my vote for more love. How people vote also goes into it.Puppy Face

I agree about two groups being a good idea. Personally, between being a full-time employee and finishing up grad school, I haven't had as much free time as I'd like. Even one hour can be difficult sometimes.

Yeah, that random mixing is exactly why people feel their files aren't doing well. You get put into a group after the file is made, so if your file is heavily disfavored by 25% of the contestants and you just so happen to be put in the same group as them, you are just fucked. Even if the entire other group would have loved it to the point of putting it at the top of the week, it means nothing because you aren't in the same group.

I'd rather be close to the top 10 among all files than place below the top 10 one week because I was put in a group that would have not voted for my file to begin with. I'm sure many others feel the same way. Placing 15th out of 40? Nice. Placing 15th out of 20 despite the other group wanting to vote for it? Sucks.

It is supposed to be a fun contest and I'm seeing a lot of people here not having fun with this. Clearly something is wrong.

yeah, im not a fan of being randomly placed in a group that-generally speaking-doesnt like my charting style, and thus doesnt vote for it. that fucking blows man. which leads to my files doing poorly, i feel like an idiot, and contemplate quitting

TBH I think we overthink stuff with the addition of split group of contestant for the sake of lighter evaluation loads and with repressing the feedbacks in order to keep the voting healthy. The change from public voting to private voting itself I thought was another overthinking case, but I think it's not a big deal since it happened because of some cases happening beforehand regarding the voting and people still discuss some stuff afterwards. With the current changes (two big changes simultaneously that mostly happening without any discussion), I just think the contest became too strict, which most of us probably didn't want to be constricted by too many rules to begin with.

My suggestion is, maybe for the next two or three weeks try to keep the submissions not splitted and see how it works. IMO If it's not broken, then we shouldn't fix it.

This.

As much as I understand the complaints about splitting the files, some people simply don't have the time to evaluate that many files while still having to make their file for the current week, on top of anything else life throws at them.

Since feedback during the week of judging isn't prohibited, I've decided to give some short reviews on my group as I play through and vote. But to avoid influencing other judges that happen to glance over it, I'm "anonymizing" the files by replacing their names with the number of jumps + mines in the hardest chart. I figure that anyone who's going to the trouble of reversing that is probably just looking up their own file Smile

50: Super solid file with a retro charting feel. Careful not to face right too much!
51: Good, clean, easy fun. A little obvious copy-paste-mirror action but it doesn't worsen the chart any.
62: This feels like a good file on the cusp of becoming great, but you gave too little attention to the 16th rhythms (first half) or the patterning (second half). Nothing I outright didn't like though.
62: Reminds me of old ITG custom charts. It gets the point across well! It's a bit repetitive, but I also feel that's due in no small part to the song.
67: Really good, thoughtful incorporation of jumps into a solid chart. Probably should bump the rating up though, this is HARD for what it's at now
70: Cute use of shock arrows. I think the patterning needs a bit of work but, with as easy as the file is, it still works well enough.
71: Cheeky use of the attack! Super quiet, hard to hear what rhythms you were following…I think a lot of them may have been made up.
72: Cute and fun. Be careful how you leave LR or UD jumps - there were a couple places where the leading foot was ambiguous.
75: Technically sound, but a lot of the jumps felt "stapled on", added as an afterthought. Also be careful not to fall into karaoke stepping when it's not the most forward element…
77: If you're going to chart a BEMANI track I expect a lot more than steps to the leads. No free clout. If you wanna step the wobbles, at least be consistent. Not sure what's going on with your patterning, either - most of it faces right and there's a lot of doublesteps to force it into that. Drills are in vogue right now for official DDR but I need to see a lot less of them.
84: Extremely uncomfortable to play. It's very DDR-authentic, but I can't imagine queueing this up willingly, and it's way too much for the chillout song it's set to.
89: As the player, this chart kinda feels like you're just going through the motions for two minutes. I can't fault almost anything about the chart itself though, it just doesn't have much pizzazz. Cute use of the backward crossover unraveling thing to accent though
100: When the actual jump sections hit, they were cute, but I can't abide this quantity of karaoke stepping to a jungle track. It's a waste!
101: If you're going to chart a BEMANI track I expect a lot more than steps to the leads. No free clout. The jump placements don't complement the song, either?
176: Played it veeeeeery safe with the rhythms - I'm not sure this is to your benefit. Great foray into what I'm led to believe are brackets, but make sure you leave room for the player's foot to *release* as well! there are a lot of overlapping incidents.
179: I have no idea what you intended with this chart. The patterns don't make any sense and aren't consistent.
240: …this is SO GOOD. You need to bump the rating up by one or two but otherwise you've made your case for this theme flawlessly.
306: I had the distinct sensation I was playing a GuitarFreaks chart at first. The shock arrows are way too close to the jumps to not drift into them by accident on pad. Switches in and out of following the vocals at will. The BPM gimmicks are cool but not consistently applied and often disorienting. Crossovers are great, I love crossovers, but they happen so often and without much purpose. Lots of good ideas...no glue.
375: I'm sorry. I don't have anything nice to say about this one. I suppose it might fit in the DDR X days when they had just invented shock arrows and were sussing out how to use them.
477: You've got great taste in music! But please listen to it while you write the chart. A lot of wrong note placement, and unbelievably cumbersome patterning.

Personally, I feel like it's not just personal opinion of simfiles ;)

Back on DDREvolved.com, people were allowed to enter the friendly competitions anonymously so that nobody would be biased to each other, which would make for a few nice little surprises, as certain people would copy each others graphical styles, I entered with a Hello! Project file once and people thought it was Sanchny's because I made a video banner in the same style haha! but we'd also arrange a date, gather on AIM (ugh I feel old) and discuss each file in a pack, though I agree with whoever said 40 files is a lot of files to go through, and yea... personal opinion could mean anything, that means weebs could be biased to anime files, EDM lovers biased to house/trance/hhc and so on.

Maybe it'd be worth finding 3-5 trust worthy judges? people you know ain't gonna vote for their bff's Tongue find different aged people too, someone from max-ex days, someone who joined in the early 2010's, and then some millennial who loves A2O

I'd be down to help judge something like this, tbh. But maybe not if contest placement is a prerequisite... :v
