One of the more recent ones would be recommended (a nicer interface, for a start), rather than 2nd+3rd or 4th+3rd.
I'd personally suggest starting with Masterpiece Gold.

MPG, MPS, V
I started with V and got to around the 50's range before moving on to a different one.

I would surely go for masterpiece gold.
many people suggested that I get V3 instead of MPG but I like both. mgp is more varied and looks awesome (not that this would be the criteria for choosing a game).
I personally like V songwise the most. But my first two picks I would take MPG and V3

Agreed, V is a great mix, but Masterpiece Gold and V3 have much nicer game software.
If I were starting anew, I would probably have gone for V after MPG (and before Masterpiece Silver, 4th+3rd, V3 and V2 in that order, and I wouldn't bother with Drummania or 3rd+2nd [mainly because it doesn't support MIDI drumkits, but also because they just aren't that good compared to the later mixes]).

OK, MP Gold seems to be the way to go for me. So, as soon as I get a NTSC-J formatted PS2, that's the first game I'll buy.

So I'm also thinking about getting into GF/DM, but I can't decide whether to get V, V3, or MPG first. I really like V3's interface, and it's got Venus, but V's got The Least 100sec. MPG, however, has a good theme too, and it's got Konoko no nanatsu no oiwaini. I really don't want to base my decision on just those three songs, so does anyone want to give their opinion on which of these three has the best songlist?

That's entirely a question of taste. For what it's worth, personally, I prefer MPG of the three, and then V (especially since "gently, the rain sings for me" f'kin ROCKS).
