5.1 Beta 2 is here; most of the changes are bug fixes over the first beta, but the new default theme did get a major visual overhaul after some consultation.

here's the combined changelog of 5.1 B1/B2:

Player-visible changes
*New default theme
*The DirectInput handler for Windows now supports XInput.
*Make announcers repeat their lines less
*Add connection timeout to StepMania Online sockets
*USB custom songs like ITG r21

Creator-visible changes
*ImageCache functions.
*Lots of new ArrowEffects, mainly ported from OpenITG and NotITG V1
*Fixed handling of ThemePrefs on themes that are children
*Make getenv() and setenv() actually get and set the current env
*The ScreenFilter env will be nil sometimes, catch that
*Improve DrawQuads batching in the font render
*Distance field effects and fonts.
*Sprite:Load function can set additional texture hints by setting a second argument
*New noteskin NoteColorType ProgressAlternate; notes on a frame boundary (for example, if there are 4 frames, notes at 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 0.75 beats) use the previous frame instead (more like actual DDR vivid)
*Additional functions and Lua bindings for online mode, including song file and chart hashing, keyboard scrolling for chat, ability to implement basic mouse navigation, etc.
*Ability to reload preferences from the debug menu. Some preferences are only checked at startup and are unaffected by the reload.
*New SetActualDancePoints and SetPossibleDancePoints functions
*Noteskin names may contain spaces.
*GetNumCourseEntries function.

Bug fixes
*Moved display zbuffer clear to after notefields are drawn
*Initialise variables to ensure input thread is started
*Preserve event timestamps in X11 input driver
*Corrected Lua documentation for SONGMAN:GetCoursesInGroup()
*The ScreenEdit notefield now scales on themes with internal resolutions higher than 480p.
*Bug fixed where player difficulty meter and/or color inside MusicWheelItem don't update when switching between difficulties
*Exclusive and borderless fullscreen modes avaliable on X11, and issues with fullscreen fixed on macOS
*Coin count is now saved to a file in the /Save folder.
*Unselectable trails are pruned from course selection when AutoSetStyle is active.
*Turn lights off on exit

Compilation
Fix compiling on Linux by updating the libmmmagic binaries.

I gonna guess this will effect themes that will not be compatible with it, other than that the new look is great.

the whole point of 5.1 is not to break SM 5.0.12 stuff

A useful PR that supposed to fix gameplay for WINXP users (and sometimes for win10 users too) where the whole screen freezes after at least 50 minutes haven't been merged in this build yet.
