(MODS: Feel free to move to a more appropriate forum if necessary)

Hey everyone, while browsing Facebook I found someone selling these dance pads (pictured below) which I have always seen about, but having never used one I want to know if they are worth picking up at all (for casual play) and how much I should pay if they are? I'm thinking they may be decent as they are hard, but the gaps between the buttons in relation to the rest of the pad put me off and I wonder how durable and responsive the pad would be. And for those who do have one, do they function okay when connected to PC through an adapter? I had a soft pad before that had issues responding to SM (reading left/right presses as both as well as latency) so I don't want to have similar issues as SM will be my main use for it.

Also please don't base your judgement when compared to a high priced metal pad, I know for some people a £400 pad is the only way to experience DDR but I'm not willing to shell out anywhere near that. Also the horrible cropping is from the guy selling it so sorry about that :^)

As a kid I had one of these, if you’re playing casually (like when I had mine I played old scale 7/8s at the very most and barely cared about scoring at all) it’ll suffice but the buttons take a lot of force to push down and sink awkwardly. It’s a step up from a soft pad but not by a massive amount, my one started to suffer with the switches sticking but that was fixed by opening it and applying wd-40 to each button. If you’re worried about the travel distance just by looking at it you’re probably at that point where it wouldn’t suffice for you, personally speaking anyway.

Also whether or not it works well with stepmania is almost exclusively down to the adapter you use, if you’re getting laggy inputs with a pad it’s more down to a cheap or poor quality converter.

I know people say you need a £400 pad or something to enjoy the game and that’s only true based on how good you get at the game, I can’t enjoy playing on a soft pad anymore as I need something highly responsive (and doesn’t break my feet which rules out my precision dance pad unfortunately now) , it’s ultimately down to how much you care or don’t care about the experience. If you honestly just have fun being able to hit arrows full stop then look for something cheap and cheerful, if you need arcade accurate setups then you’re gonna need to put the money into it.

Sorry if it seems a bit of a rambling reply but I was hoping it’d give you a bit of insight as to why there’s no real answer to ‘is this pad going to do for me’ without knowing precisely what you like to do.

If you're not looking to spend a lot of cash, just "wood mod" a soft pad. Wood mod being taping a soft pad to a large sheet of wood. It'll perform better than these dodgy plastic pads.

"Yuuki Mishima for Tekken"
I'd say if you can clear anything harder than MAX 300... no. If you're someone who isn't the best and like playing X-scale 11s and 12s, it'll certainly be okay.

How much are they asking for this? I'll be honest it looks like it wouldn't necessarily be more fun to play on than a soft pad and potentially would be worse, though it would break less frequently.

EDIT: Like others said if you're playing charts easier than classic 10s/X 15s it would probably be fine, given that the going rate for these things seems to be about $90 or so.
