I have IIDX 12th Style, and have NO IDEA how to play, how should I place my fingers to begin with, and what other tips can you give me to start off?

Key layout:

 [2][4][6]
[1][3][5][7]

This is my fingering which is a variant of the default finger positions (if playing with the turntable on the left hand side):

1 = Left ring
2 = Left middle
3 = Left index
4 = Left index/Right index
5 = Right index
6 = Right middle
7 = Right ring

The positions are default and should be your starting point. I still use this a lot.

When scratching (this may differ from player to player):

S = Left little/Left ring
1 = Left thumb
2 = Left index
3 = Right thumb
4 = Right index

As you get better, you might get used to other positions, which is okay. At the end of the day, play in positions that rack you up high scores and that you're comfortable with it. Smile

To be honest, it's kind of one of those games you have to learn yourself Confused At least that's the way it was for me. But the way I play is with my left pinkie running the turntable and my other three fingers running the 3 keys on the left end, while my four fingers on my right run the other 4 keys. I rarely use my thumbs. Just try low level stuff in Free Play and Beginner Modes. If you need help using the controls, that's not too hard either. The white keys are basically your select button, while the black keys are your back button. If you want to quit out of a song, hold both start and select buttons. If you want to change options, press start on the song selection menu. Holding select changes your equalizer settings. Also, while in the middle of a song, if a speed change is too rough for you, hold start and use the keys to change it (white keys down, black keys up).

Well that's good news that we helped! Keep truckin away, and you'll be at 5's in no time ;) Right now I'm stuck at the transition from 8's to 9's. I can do about 3/4 of the 8's and only about 1/4 of the 9's. And wow, playing a machine is harder O_o. Why does that turntable have to be raised???? Jeez.

If I could play on a machine, maybe I would be a lot more motivated to get better. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but sometimes it's downright frustrating. I can clear a few 10s, but I think I'm still pretty below average. Just play a lot (have more than 1 game available, even bmUS and any JP game could be helpful), watch videos of players and try to spot details in their playstyles, and of course, a lot of patience. Don't get mad when you can't seem to place your fingers where you want even when you can read the patterns, it takes time to get used to the IIDX controller. Also, choose the right speed for your level. And when you get better, Towel/Sudden+. Good luckBig Grin

I am going to stick to playing at home, as no arcade very close to me has IIDX, sure, one has a 5 key, but that is not what I want to play...

Are thumbs a big deal in improving gameplay?
I can't get used to incorporating them into my playstyle... Which is quite awkward because my fingers are all over the palce. And I'm curious if that's why I'm not improving.

It kinda depends. I have a friend who can do most 10's who started incorporating thumbs and now he does better. I would say just keep trucking away, cuz the farther you get, the harder the transitions between levels are.

What kind of a font is THAT!? Tempura Sans? Anyway, I have a question. In all of your opinions, which IIDX CS would you recommend for me (someone who's used to 7-9 - from what I've done on BePachi Music)?

Well personally, I loved DistorteD (almost nothing I dislike on that mix), but all I own is that, Happy Sky and BMUS atm... so I'd wait for like... Al's opinion since he owns a ton of them lol.

HAPPY SKY!!!!! Happy Sky is my favourite Smile It's always there for me when DistorteD owns my ass Smile Disorted has a pretty nice variety of 7-9s altogether, and HS seems pretty heavy on 8s to me.

Granted, i've only played those 2 and 8thStyle... So yeah, I've heard many good things about 10th Style.

And I think I will start to try using thumbs more... and tidy up my playstyle in general. Smile

I must be the only one who is not a big fan of Happy Sky. I love Distorted and 7th style. (Music wise).
