I've got a couple of old Beatmania PS2 controllers (from the US Beatmania release), is there any way to connect these to a computer and use them with Lunatic Rave? (Or whatever the current Beamania simulator is called)

Obviously I'd need a PS2-to-USB converter, but is anything else required?

Nothing other than an adapter is required, though I'm not sure if any particular adapters are more or less ideal. I'm using a Super Joy Box 3 Pro from Mayflash, but that particular adapter is so old it doesn't have proper drivers for Windows 10 (but default controller behavior is good enough for a PS2 IIDX controller to work).

I'm also pretty sure that something about the voltage or something of the US Konami Official Controllers is higher than a standard DualShock 2 controller as well, because when I had a single adapter with two controller ports (from Mayflash as well), plugging two IIDX controllers would always result in rapid-fire button presses when holding a button (as opposed to it being really rare with normal controllers), so I got two separate adapters when that one broke, and haven't had that issue anymore.

SP 11* Clears: 132/150 (88.00%); 12* Clears: 23/96 (23.96%)
Has access to CS 9th-EMP+PB+US, uses extended KOCs.

So that's it, just the adapter? Nice. I won't be using two controllers, just one.

What simulator/emulator do I use? I don't really know anything about Stepmania equivalents for Beatmania.

LR2 is the closest thing to a Stepmania for IIDX. There's some differences here and there, but compared to all others out there it's the most accurate to the original IIDX experience if that's what you're looking for.

Something I ran into that you should be aware of is that with most (if not all) adapters, specifically the US version of the beatmania controller has inconsistent delay on PC. This is a result of konami deciding for whatever reason to change the circuitry inside the controller to interface a different way with the PS2 than a standard controller despite overall having very few differences to the JP version otherwise (At least that's all I could find online about the issue anyways.) I haven't found any easy workarounds for this, so you might just be best off sticking to the PS2 IIDX games or getting a Japanese controller or even a dao if you can afford the cost.

Ah. Damn. Oh well. I hate the US PS2 Beatmania, it only has like 30 songs.

If there is an inconsistent input delay on the US KOC, it doesn't seem to be unplayable, at least with my adapter. I've been using the US KOC for over 10 years and it hasn't seemed too inconsistent on PC (though my timing also isn't anywhere near great), so using it with an adapter isn't too bad of a choice if they already have the controller (though a DJ Dao controller is obviously a better choice if you can afford it).
