You should really make a thread advertising them first. That’s really the only way we’ll know, nobody really checks the ‘last files uploaded’ list.

Also probably best to title your threads properly, the first thing we see is the title so it’s best that you sum up what you want to say in the title.

ALSO II: 99% of the people on here play Expert files. It’s surprisingly difficult judging files that are only at difficulty 1.

Okay, so just for the hell of it, I actually decided to download Breathe and offer some stepping advice.

The good news is, I've definitely played worse simfiles. You at least get points for doing an alright job of avoiding double-steps, which is a pretty common newbie mistake. The bad news is... everything else, quite frankly.

Let's start with probably the biggest eyebrow-raiser here; the graphics. I took a peek at the graphics for your other simfiles too, and... uhh.. what's with the Paddington obsession? Like, that's great and all that you have a favorite character, but the graphics should ideally have something to do with the song. Paddington doesn't fit this song. He definitely does not fit Reggaeton Lento(Remix). I mean, when I think of reggae, I think of the Caribbean, not an anthropomorphic bear from London.

Great, now I've got this weird mental image of Paddington dirty dancing on the beach with some girls in bikinis. Thanks a lot.

And why did you include both an .mp3 AND an .ogg? You only need one, preferably the .ogg. Including both just makes for unnecessary bloating.

From what I can see, it doesn't look like you actually bothered to take the time to sync the song properly. Yes, the BPM is correct, but songs rarely have an offset of exactly 0. If you take the .ogg an open it in a program like Audacity and look at the song's waveform, you'll see that the actual first note of the song is closer to the 0.05 second mark. Granted, I've seen way worse sync jobs, but the fact is there doesn't seem to be any evidence to suggest that you tried syncing the song in the first place, which just comes across as lazy.

Speaking of lazy, you do know you can adjust when the preview music starts, right? Leaving it as the default just means that the preview is going to start at a rather awkward point.

Moving on to the steps... Well, first off, 1-footers generally don't have 8th note clusters in them. Let's get that one out of the way. It's also general practice to have the hardest chart (or in your case, the only chart) to be stepped on Expert or Challenge, not Beginner. Beginner gives off the impression that it's... well, for beginners. Stepping a 1-footer on Beginner isn't going to get many people's attention, as Oni-91 said earlier. As for the steps themselves, well... Like I said before, you do at least avoid double-stepping for the most part, which is a nice start. The problem is that the patterns you actually used tend to be boring and repetitive. There's a HUGE reliance on stuff like "Up Up Up Up Up Up Up Up Up" or "LR Jump LR Jump LR Jump LR Jump LR Jump LR Jump". Stuff like that tends to get boring really quickly, and there's over three minutes of this kind of thing repeated throughout the file. Rhythm choice tends to be equally as lazy. Generally, what you want to do is have the steps follow the rhythm of the song. Other than the occasional 8th notes to "da-da-da", all you have here is 4th notes that don't really try to match the song at all. Then there's some oddly long breaks between notes that leaves the player standing there doing nothing, which is again pretty boring.

So, no, I didn't really enjoy playing Breathe. The whole thing just feels like you didn't put much effort into it. It was lazy, it was boring, and I will never look at Paddington the same way ever again.

Actually I do check the Latest 20 User Simfiles. It's just that I do not even consider downloading SIMFILES that do not even have banners.

We really appreciate your enthusiasm and the fact that you want to share your work with us, but please refrain from constantly bumping this thread asking if people are enjoying your files. If people want to say anything about your files, good or bad, they will post here, or PM you.

And just as many people have said, maybe I would have tried your files if the presentation was better, but none of your files have banners, all of them have a Paddington Bear background, and all have only a Beginner chart rated a 1. It comes off as unprofessional.

My advice to you is to improve the presentation. Make more of an effort to make your files look playable. Once you at least begin to rate your files instead of making them all a 1, you can improve on your simfile making capabilities. Don't be discouraged if people criticize your files as they only want to help you improve. Continue practicing. Just like learning to ride a bike, making simfiles takes practice.

I wish you the best of luck. Smile

Yeah, feedback kind of works both ways. You receive feedback, then you try implementing it. But instead of implementing any of that feedback, you've instead responded with this:

Quote: sarahoh
Paddington Bear is NOT going anywhere!

Which implies that you're really not interested in changing anything, which completely defeats the purpose of feedback. I don't think you truly want feedback as much as you want free compliments. By the way, nobody is interested in giving out free compliments.

Bottom line, don't ask for feedback unless you plan on actually using it.

Gameoson hits the nail on the head: Saying "I'm only asking for opinions and feedback, I've worked so hard." is utterly ridiuclous. He and 4 other people have given you honest feedback and brought up problems you need to address (extremely basic and uninspired 1 footers, missing banners, having both an .ogg and .mp3, what boils down to placeholder backgrounds, etc.) but even after they made their posts, you continue to upload simfiles with only 1-footer beginner charts and incomplete graphics, as if you didn't even listen to anyone's criticism at all.

This can make people stop caring to leave feedback (especially if they've encountered several people that don't seem to improve from their feedback), which can then leave other noob-level steppers that actually want the tips to improve in the dark and that's not good.

If free-style charts are what you want, I suggest taking a look at the simfiles by users ledgam3r1279 and chewi, their stuff is old-school DDR based, have tons of freestyle potential (especially any of the charts under a 6 footer) and are generally well-received by the community. Go through them. Find pattern choices that you like and try to figure out how to implement them into your files.

Also, your chart doesn't need to be a 1 footer for free-styling. As I said, ledgam3r1279 has some impressive free style charts on challenge or edit that go up to 5-6 footers (Special One, Too Funky, Diggy). The journey's just begun, but it shouldn't just stay there. Branch out your simfile skills a little bit, explore territory you never thought to go before. Take the criticism you've been given to heart and if you address the issues given out, a lot more people will enjoy your files.

I see that. Good job on using that feedback.

Now I have some more tips that will help you out. As I have previously mentioned, you should try to give your simfiles banners. These will help your simfile stand out and will make it look much more complete, especially when playing it within StepMania itself.

The next thing I would suggest is to not put your files on the Beginner (beginner) difficulty. It seems as though the charts you are making are intended to either be for Standard (standard/difficult) or Heavy (heavy/expert). If you really want to play it safe, put them on the Challenge (challenge) difficulty. Only use Beginner for charts that are intended for beginners to DDR or ITG.

My last piece of advice is to rate your charts. If you are having difficulty with giving your charts a difficulty rating, you should at least rate by the recommended level StepMania gives you. I used to do that when I didn't know how to rate my files. It should be a good example of how your file should be rated, at least with the level of stepping you are creating. Once you become more proficient and familiar with the difficulty scale and how files should be rated, you won't need to use that. However, for where you are you should try it out.

Good luck, and keep it up. Happy

It was an accident, I don't need it so I'm going to change things

Now these stepcharts can be used for freestyle tournaments if they were ever going to happen.

Will these stepcharts ever work in freestyle tournaments?
