.dwi and .sm are totally different files, but .dwi's are better because they are smaller. Bu i you want an .sm instead, just go in to the edit mode and pick the song you want an .sm for and re-save it, and an .sm file will be created this way. If you want to put them on a USB to play on another computer, then the file type shouldn't matter, but if you're going to play on an ITG machine, then you will need .sm's.
