Banjo Tooie

The sequel to Banjo Kazooie, in my opinion its better than the original. The music is better, it has more gameplay elements, and the stages are pretty creative. The levels interconnect and play off of each other in a great way, and the game has pretty good boss fights. The only grip I have, and many have it, is that the levels are too large and you will sometimes spend a lot of time running around unsure of what to do.

Tight handling, awesome soundtrack, cool tracks, and just like any other Ridge Racer, whipping around corners is fun.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1f/EarthBound_Box.jpg

Like a lot of people, I never got the chance to play this when it first came out (besides the fact that I was only 3 and a half years old at the time); I vaguely remember my cousin playing this on an emulator back in '99, and he was at the part where you went behind the waterfall and the password was you had to wait 10 minutes or something like that. I was confused at the time, and it wasn't until around 2006/7 that I played the game on an emulator myself. Needless to say, I fell in love with it. It inspired a bunch of like-minded games (including Undertale), and rightfully so. There's not a lot of RPGs that have Earthbound's charm, and I imagine it would be very hard to pull off, especially with a big publisher and especially nowadays when a lot of people want dark/edgy stuff in their games.

And that's why a lot of people (including myself) are fans of Earthbound; it wasn't hellbent on wanting to copy what was hip or what would appeal to your average demographic. Shigesato Itoi was freely able to do his own thing with the script, and the rest of Ape/HAL were along for the ride. It took them 4 years, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Mega Man X (X1-X4)

I love the first four Mega Max X games, all roughly the same although X1 or X2 are probably the best on a gameplay level. The original Mega Man games were phenomenal as well but I didnt grow up with those like I did Mega Man X.

http://www.iplayplaystation.com/wp-content/uploads/we-love-katamari-cover.jpg

I was a fan of the first Katamari game (and it also helped that it was only $20 when it first came out), and the sequel pretty much dialed the best parts of the game up to 11; it was not only a longer game, there was more level variety, more settings, an equally amazing soundtrack, and even some post-game stuff too.

I always like the simplicity of the American boxart, but shoutouts to the Japanese one too, because how often do you see a picture of people (assuming they're the dev team) standing outside Namco's HQ holding signs up, and have that be the cover of your game? XD

Okay so I didn't see this thread until the 22nd, but I really like it so I wanted to partake!

I think I gotta play catch-up, so here's a quick summary of 22 of my favorite games (in no particular order):

1. Jak II
My favorite game of all time by a longshot. It was one of the first games I played on the PS2, and was a bonding experience between me & my dad. I loved the serious setting and the way it developed the world from the first game, and the additions like guns and vehicles and optional challenges made for a lot of replay value. Maybe in the recap I'll go all-out on everything I like and even don't like about this game, but it's a real significant part of my life I think.

2. Game Dev Tycoon:
I'm an aspiring Game Designer (among several other lofty goals), and so that was the first appeal this game had for me. You take on the role of a dude living in your mom's basement making games in the 1980's, and you basically go through the history of the industry as you build your own company. Gameplay is really simple, and it's something you can do in the background. The real fun, it turned out for me, was making my own little franchises and getting imaginary feedback. It's passively addicting.

3. Half-Life
I didn't play many PC games until the start of 2015. Half-Life was one of the games that won me over as far as keyboard+mouse controls. It's aged amazingly well, and still has a lot of really tense and immersive moments. I like that the story is going on under the hood, and that your level of attention gives you a unique experience with it. It's easy to learn, rewarding to master.

4. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
I like to think I like a little bit of everything, but usually strategy games aren't part of that equation. The original XCOM games were stupidly complex and unbelievably hard, and I feel that Enemy Unknown is the best example of how to bring an older game like that into the modern day. The system and tiny details are completely re-vamped, but the general strategy and feeling is still there.

5. Grand Theft Auto V
I have played this way too much. It's not perfect, but the way they tell their story with 3 characters, the level of fidelity when walking around the city, and just all the possibilities in the game - it's near endless fun.

6. Silent Hill 2
I haven't actually played this all the way through (3spook5me), but man this is good game. It's a great exercise in atmosphere and really getting into the player's head. Everything is symbolic and lends itself to being both thought-provoking and genuinely scary. Also, for a 2001 title it looks insanely good.

7. Tiny & Big: Grandpa's Leftovers
*snobbish hipster voice* It's really obscure, you probably haven't heard of it
But yeah, it's a cheap little game on Steam that I found by chance, and it's a great callback to when 3D platformers when they were at their peak. It's short and silly, but also well-made and gives a lot of freedom to the player. It's a game where it's just fun to interact with it.

8. Driver: San Francisco
When you think Racing Game, I certainly don't think "clever mechanics and really good plot" but that's what this is. It's also really funny. On top of all that, the actual racing is still fun.

9. Defy Gravity
I like random little indie games on Steam. This is a 2D platformer where you navigate a level with Gravity guns. It's the same train of thought as portal, and it goes from very easy to unbelievably hard.

10. Undertale
Anyone sick of hearing about this game yet? It's one that might very well go down as one of the best in video game history. I won't bother blabbing about it since others have already done so.

11. LYNE
When I was thinking about all the games I liked, one common thing among a lot of them was a game with a small set of controls that somehow still let you do a lot with it. LYNE is a puzzle game where all you have to do is connect different shapes with a line, and the amount of puzzles you can make out of that is staggering. It's like sudoku or solitaire, but even more accessible.

12. Persona 4
This game took over my life for about a month. It's such a good murder mystery, and it somehow coupled well with a slice-of-life anime vibe. I loved the characters and the way you get to know them, and just getting to really know the town of Inaba.

13. Portal
I mean, it's Portal.

14. Fallout 3
I played this game about 50 hours, which I get is barely a sample for some, but for me that makes it one of my most played games. It's so cool getting to explore and piece together all the little stories that the world leaves behind.

15. Cave Story
This is such an addicting game, and it always provides a new challenge just when you think you're at your best. It's also a great example of game design and getting someone to git gud, so there's that.

16. A Story about my Uncle
If you've got a sense of adventure, this one's for you. You get a pair of rocket-boots, a suit that lets you survive a fall from any height, a super-advanced grapple-hook, and a massive cave full of floating rocks. Go.

17. Guitar Hero 2
I think this game started a long transition that got from wanting to be an elctrical engineer to wanting to make music for a living.

18. DDR Extreme 2
This game specifically was the only one I ever owned as a kid, so it's the one I'm most familiar with. I recently picked this game up again over the summer, after like 10 years, and I got right back into the groove. As a bonus, it led me to finding this site!

19. Minecraft
The quintessential sandbox. I've spent so much time tinkering with redstone, building entire cities, and living off the land in survival mode. My time spent playing probably quadrupled when I found out about servers.

20. Grim Fandango
Probably one of the funniest games I've played. It's also a really cool mix of Film-Noir and the Day of The Dead. It's got all the downsides of an adventure game, but it more than makes up for it with the story and the charm.

21. Hotline Miami
You will never get a more satisfying adrenaline rush that when playing this.

22. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
i cri evrytim
This is probably the best example I can think of as far as melding gameplay and story together. It's a wholly unique experience.

I thought about putting Super Mario World here, but then I thought "eeh, seems a bit cliche.", so I picked Splatoon instead.

As Nintendo's first-ever third-person shooter, it's a very fun game with a very hip aethetic; they pretty much proved that you actually can make a shooter that doesn't have the usual M-rated stuff on there, and look good doing it. A pretty fun single player with extra stuff here and there to unlock (especially if you happen to have some certain Amiibos at hand), and a very robust multiplayer made it one of the better games of last year, hands down. The only thing missing was Hideki Naganuma making the soundtrack. ;)

Dark Souls

I played this game for the first time just this last February and it scores this high on my list. It is THAT good. I loved everything about this game. Its extremely challenging, completely not following the trend of modern games of having low difficulty. The music is amazing. The game has no cutscenes so it maintains a quick sense of momentum, yet it also has one of the most in depth and complex backstories/lores of any game I can think of, it just forces you to do some research if you want to learn the whole thing. The second game was not so good. The third game which recently came out was great but not quite as fantastic as the original one.

Everyone should play this game, even if they cant beat it. Just get used to seeing this screen:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/24/Tales_of_Xillia_Cover.png

I really loved this game when it first came out; it wasn't like your typical Tales game, because you had Milla as one of the 2 playable MCs, and she was smart, yet acting like an alien who crash landed on Earth at the same time. ;) The chemistry between her and the other characters are amazing, and I did not once skip any of the skits. Plus, the overall plot didn't feel like it was a cut-and-paste story that Vesperia had.

The beginning can be a bit of a grindfest, but once you're able to progress through the story, you have a very live world with a colorful cast of characters; it's not like Persona 4, but it's definitely one of Namco's best stories for an RPG.

That, and you have the fighting-game-esque battle system that's very fast-paced, which I sometimes wish more JRPGs would adopt, and you have a game that's up there with one of the better RPGs you'll play in recent history.... oh, and of course, Teepo. Without Teepo, there's no hope.

Shadow of the Colossus

I love the feel of this game, and there's no greater sensation than hanging off of a giant bird-thing as some of the most epic music ever written is going on in the background.
