Sonic Mania / Project Sonic 2017

So there were two announcements during some Sonic 25th Anniversary stream. One of them was dark, foreboding, and involved Modern Sonic AND Classic Sonic. Again. However, it wasn't called Generations 2, so I have no idea what to think of it. Whatever the case, I really do believe a dark Sonic game can be done, despite what Shadow the Hedgehog did to try and ruin that idea. Checkout the trailer here:



I found it kind of cool, but I don't hold my breath for anything spectacular.

H-O-W-E-V-E-R, something that I WOULD hold my breath for, is a retro Sonic game named Sonic Mania. It's a 2D game, and when I say 2D, I don't mean Sonic 4 2D, I mean Sonic CD 2D. (In fact, Christian Whitehead, the man behind pretty much every port of Sonic CD imaginable is involved in this game) Featuring the main trio of Sonic characters as playable characters, apparantly both "reimagined" versions of classic stages and all-new ones, and a fucking DELIGHTFUL aesthetic, this may actually be something worth getting excited over. From what I've seen with Studiopolis it feel like Sonic CD in design with Knuckles' Chaotix graphics.

Elemental Shields from Sonic 3 & Knuckles are back and so is the Eggman monitor.

The Combine Ring from Chaotix is a plus.

Im loving the soundtrack so far, i hope the other tracks are also good as Studiopolis Zone act 1

I'm pretty much at the point of...

Sonic Mania looks absolutely fantastic. It seems they might have been inspired by Freedom Fighters to take classic 2D Sonic out for another go, without it being Sonic 4... I hope it will have as many levels as Sonic 3 & Knuckles locked-on, with one half being new levels and the other half being the classic levels. Hell, maybe just have as many new levels as Sonic 3&K, and have the classic levels be a bonus.

Project Sonic also seems to be a step in the right direction, what with the Hedgehog Engine being one of the best things to come out of a 3D Sonic game. This is their chance to address some of the biggest problems that Sonic Generations had: too little levels, and stuttering frame rates. A 60 FPS 3D Hedgehog Engine game would be so exquisite... On consoles of course, since on PC you can already do this.

This has the potential to be the best 3D Sonic yet, so I hope they don't mess it up. Given their strong connections with the fanbase through social media, they should have a pretty good idea of what the people want to see in a new Sonic game by now.

Hidden Palace Zone? Michael Jackson? Sonic Xtreme?

Well I am beyond excited for Sonic Mania. In regards to remixed zones of the past, I would love to see anything from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Starlight Zone, Hill Top Zone, Mystic Cave Zone, Oil Ocean Zone, Tidal Tempest, and Quartz Quadrant (although I suppose it would only make sense for the latter two to appear if Little Planet makes some kind of appearance). Even though I doubt this would happen, I would even love to see any of the 5 Zones from Knuckles' Chaotix make a comeback. Remixing those shouldn't be too hard since each area has 5 different layouts to work with and any sections that required the Combi System teamwork could simply be edited or removed.

In other words go play Sonic 2 for android/iOS, no hope in hell for Sonic 3 & Knuckles on the retro engine and android/iOS, if you want Sonic Xtreme so bad then here it is http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_X-treme#The_Unofficial_Release (Yes we finally have Sonic Xtreme to some greater/lesser degree)

As good as the games look (and oh wow does Sonic Mania tickle my pickle), I'm amazed that they got anything out of that livestream. It was so wonderfully terrible.

Not gonna lie, this is the most-hyped I've been for a videogame since Smash 4. This is a day 1 purchase for me all the way.
