StepMania 5.1.0 Alpha 2 release notes
Bugfixes, NewField improvements, and a new fullscreen backend for linux.
StepMania 5.0.11 release notes
This will probably be the last release in the 5.0.x line. Maintaining two separate branches is a hassle, and the 5.1 branch is in good shape.
If you downloaded 5.1.-2 before this post, you have a version with broken autogen. Turns out it was broken for 5 months and nobody noticed.

That SSE2 exe is a few versions outdated because non-SSE2 support was dropped. The main exe is the SSE2 exe now.

Hope I'm forgiven for bumping, but I have a question about SM5. Is there a metric option to sort songs in a customized way? As it stands now, obviously putting songs in a folder, it just sorts in alphabetical order:
A
ABSOLUTE
Bad Routine
CANDY
However, what if we want to sort songs differently, like having licenses first, then originals in the same series folder, like:
CARTOON HEROES
La Bamba
WE WILL ROCK YOU
321 STARS
PARANOiA Survivor
SAKURA
Not sure if that was asked and/or answered before, but interested in utilizing such a feature if available. Or do we have to change the folder names to be have numbers and be in numerical order to sort that way?

Inside your Themes/[Current theme]/Others folder, edit "SongManager PreferredSongs.txt" with notepad.

example:

DDR 2013/BRIGHT STREAM
DDR 2013/Burst The Gravity
DDR 2013/Choo Choo TRAIN
DDR 2013/JOKER
Save afterward.

I recommend editing the "SongManager PreferredSongs.txt" file located in the Themes/_fallback/Other folder so that any theme that doesn't have this type of file can use it by default.

To whoever made the Edgy noteskin, it looks very cool. I think it should support dance and techno modes too.

add a "/" at the end of each line. I looked through my waieiGroupSort (which is a variatation of PreferredSongs.txt) file and all of the lines in the .txt (save for the folder names, obviously) end with "/"

Still no dice for me. It now reads:

And they're still appearing in alphabetical order. Does the SongManager file need to be renamed, or some other metric changes so that it reads it?

hmm... thats strange...
EDIT: Ah, what am I doing, its probably using the current theme's SongManager files for sorting instead of the _fallback one. Copy and Paste the sort there and see if it works. The Waiei, CS8/CSLA and D3NEX Themes will use their own version of the SongManager files so don't always expect the song sort to carry over those themes.

I tried that as well. I've altered between putting it in the _fallback\Other folder, and the theme I'm using \Other folder. I've also altered between using either "/" or "\" in the file, because I noticed the example that was in the PreferredSongs file in the theme when installed.
As it stands now, the PreferredSongs file in both _fallback and theme are identical. Still not sorting in my custom order. And we are sure that it's the PreferredSongs and not PreferredSort, right?

Still nada. This may be a silly question, but was this feature broken in a previous version. I'm still using SM5.09a2 from last year, and I wanted to at least see if I could get this sort working here before upgrading to SM5.1.0a2.
If not, unless I'm doing something wrong, the sort isn't working, at least not for me... I've put entries in the PreferredSongs and PreferredSort files in _fallback, Theme, even the default locations...

Upon searching for other threads related to the PreferredSort.txt file, the feature might be broken/outdated as the file goes all the way back to 3.9/3.95... I never really used it back in the day to find out how it works. Then again, it said that it didn't work in 3.9/3/9+.
Well, it was worth a try though. I don't see any other working way atm other than using the #TITLETRANSLIT trick or Waiei's Group.ini feature to sort the songs.

Hm, I wonder if the group.ini thing works solely with waiei, or can it be configured to work with other themes. Can you give an example of what the group.ini file looks like and/or how it's configured.
Also, what about the #TITLETRANSLIT trick? I only know that to change how SM reads the song itself, but that'd be useless if I were to have a song like Curry Up have a #TITLETRANSLIT to like xCurry Up, just because I want it to show towards the end of the folder....right?

Group.ini, according to waiei, only works with 5 themes at the moment: Waiei/Waiei2, D3NEX and CS8/CSLA. Basically, The Group.ini file's main purpose is to set/customize extra folders and sort songs, along with menu colors and meter type. However, their functionality between these 5 themes vary, which is why I just use Waiei because it uses most of the commands. A typical Group.ini can start like this:
Quote
#Name:z5l1; < Name of folder
#URL:http://abc.net/def/ghij/klmno/; < one of the many optional functions. These are cosmetic and does not affect the folder itself.
#COMMENT:5l1n65h07 test folder|hithere; < same one as above, except for misc. info. using the "|" symbol puts it in the next line.
#METERTYPE:DDR X; < sets the threshold meter for boss songs (11 for DDR, 17 for DDR X, 13 for ITG)
You can sort songs using either #SortList_Rear or #SortList_Front. These will make changes to the aforementioned GroupSort file in the theme. To do this, put the following in the .ini:
#SortList_Front:
<Folder Name for Simfile Goes here>:
#SortList_Rear:
<Folder Name for Simfile Goes here>:
There's other commands to put in there as well, but explaining it would take up the entire page, but you can look it up in Waiei's Theme website.
Also, the #TITLETRANSLIT trick isn't really recommended anyways since it always screws with the ABC Sort and wastes the slot needed for songs that don't have translated titles yet. Of course, you can switch the #TITLE and #TITLETRANSLIT around to get a similar effect that can be still ABC Sort-Friendly, but it still leaves the untranslated titles.

Finally figured it out; got razorblade's input as well. There was a change in the metrics.ini file that also needs to be edited to get it to sort this way. Basically added "Preferred" to the MusicWheel section.
Never mind, I feel stoopit -- I figured out what I was doing wrong. Jackets in the song group folder....duh....
