I held a tournament with all the people that I know, and I won! I also need advice on the matter...

Too bad only two other people came DX

I sent out invitations to all my acquaintences for a tourney at our local Extreme arcade. The other two guys were both "skrubs" though... how do I get more people into the game?

Host events for it more frequently, maybe some local players who didn't know you simply weren't there to see it.

Tried putting fliers up at the arcade? How much notice was it? How much did it cost to enter? What was the game?

Zero experience running a tournament (I put the amiibos on a game pad for an amiibo tournament is all...), but I'm curious for pointers. Would like to have a scrub tournament here because the local tournament scene is being plowed by pros who will shell out their wallet for winnings. I just want to play people. D:

But seriously, holding a tournament (especially for the first time) can be hit or miss by 573 miles; you'll either get a group of people who can play 15s or higher, or get a few people who got DDR HP1 a few years ago from the clearance bin at Walmart, haven't touched it since they got it, and still return their feet to the middle after each note. IMO (this is coming from someone who's never held a single tournament for anything, and has only been in one DDR tournament, mind you), I think you should keep having tournaments as regularly as possible, reach out to people you know in your area who you think would be interested (you could start by finding out if anyone on this site lives nearby), and just keep trying until you're able to get a large enough group of people who are at least decent at DDR.

Pfft rude. I would kick their butts, thank you very much.

Erm. But I wasn't paying attention; if this is about a DDR tournament, attracting people is very tough. We had a local group set up because of a video game meetup at an arcade. Afterward, they set up signs by the DDR machine to join a Facebook group and we had meetups for a while. Then the group sort of split into the casuals and the... not so casuals, I guess? Well, trying to cut the story, I think it boils down to finding out what kind of players you have around where you live and what they like to do. The tournaments we had ranged from Extreme PAs to mod gimmick nightmares.

The other problem with DDR tournaments as opposed to something with multiple setups is they can take forever. Or so it seems like most DDR tournaments I see are double-elimination and run alongside some other tournament where the players keep going back and forth. Dead; A smooth one with like 15+ people still took hours, but you don't have that many yet, so you might be good?

My recommendation for the 'taking ages' argument, run the tournament single-bracket style. Best of three random songs, winner progresses.

Alternatively, you could sign up on AIJ (another rhythm game forum), and create threads for your future tournaments in their Tournaments/Events section: http://aaronin.jp/boards/viewforum.php?f=12

Yeah... If it's the same situation as in my town your lucky if there's even a DDR Extreme machine left. Heck you're lucky if you can even find an arcade still in operation left. Everyone here just wants to stay at home and play call of duty and watch sports. Laughing Out Loud

I feel you though, I'm lucky enough to have gotten my hands on one of the machines for myself and converted it into a stepmania cab so I can play 16+ stuff (and ITG). I tried doing tournaments myself but found only a couple of other people who were all too far apart difficulty wise for it to be fun. Thinking about it now if I do a competition again I'd like to try putting skilled players on the same level as less skilled but having them use lots of mods. Might be hard with the lack of options on an extreme machine but maybe if you can think of some type of handicaps that could level the playing field a bit it would make it more fun for everyone Wink
