"ARR JOO LEADY??" |
It only recently occurred to me - after binging a week on #SGDQ... what do you think of the idea of "speedrunning console DDR games?"
Don't get me wrong. I'm not talking about spamming the shortest song until the list is complete, and then AAing everything on it. What I'm talking about is completing the Challenge/Mastery modes as quickly and efficiently as possible.
But this means setting up an agreed-upon time at which "time" begins and stops. They usually have "any %" and "100 %" categories, and for DDR, I can see seperating controllers and dance pads.
But what else do you think should fit in this topic? Are there some games that just *can't* be speedran like this, such as DDR 2010, or the terrible-in-general Dice Master Mode?
And what of games without Master Modes? Would Course Mode in EXTREME or MAX 2 count as well? I know a lot of versions have progression in courses that are more direct than the typical songlist.

I think the problem is it would be finding the fastest song in the older games and there's really no way to go any faster than the song/chart is willing to go. You could technically do it but it would not make for a very good speedrun imo.

If there were some way to make all songs run like the "simon says" missions in SN1/2 I feel like that would make a speedrun more viable.

it's not like people haven't done it before; i know i've seen people doing stuff like "get x amount of A/AA/AAA's" before, but yeah it wouldn't make for a good speedgame at all and no one would take you seriously if you tried to flaunt around your "world records" or something (people even do that with game that are actually speedrunable)
i guess it would be better for racing, but even then idk

I don't think this would be decently entertaining on scales like GDQ or even SRL really; it's a very robust run that compared to other robust speedruns like Luigi's Mansion or Metroid Fusion or something is even more straightforward and barely offers much variety in the speedrun itself aside from changing the judgement arrow locations or adding mod effects (and I mean different songs I guess but idk).

I think the challenge, instead of clearing everything, would be AA'ing(the any% run) or AAA'ing(the 100%) everything in the mix in the fastest time as Dr.D did for DDRMAX.

The only two that would be interesting to see are DDR Extreme 2 and Supernova mission mode.

Yeah, I imagine the various mission modes would likely prove the best source for something like this. I don't recall finishing any of them myself, and they can get pretty brutal later on.

An SN one sounds more interesting the more I tihnk about it, finding the optimum path to unlock everything. The missions involving getting certain dancers to appear are all going to be horrific, though.
EX's Mission Mode isn't as bad as it could be, even with the hidden unlocks, the worst thing you have to do is A Paranoia survivor, I think?

I would rather speedrun Sonic Boom than DDR SuperNova. The mission mode in that is just... godawful.
