Hi everyone, I've been on here for a while but not much of a poster since I play more than I create. I had a problem that has been really bugging me lately which is the new Stepmania build not recognizing any of my controllers.
Now I am still using my Stepmania 5 preview 4 build because it works flawlessly with it, but I tried to upgrade and it no longer works even though the previous mapping auto configs to the game, it just doesn't recognize.
The converter I'm using has been reliable since 3.9 days and it is this EMS2USB Dualshooter found here:
http://www.hkems.com/product/ps2/ps2-usb2.htm
It is a great converter that has been working for years with no problems until now. When I plug it into SM5Preview4, it shows that the 2 PS2 DDR mats I have are plugged in, and it also shows Mouse and Keyboard.
In Stepmania 5 Beta 4a, it only shows Mouse and Keyboard, but doesn't show EMSJoypad1 or EMSJoypad2.
Can anyone help? I really want to play my freshly rebuilt game with all sorts of jackets and the look from DDR 2014 built by RISK.
1/3/15 edit:
Still no success after trying a buttload of so called "solutions". I don't understand how people use vJoy to map the buttons to the joystick, because Stepmania 5 Beta 4 recognizes the virtual joystick, but not the actual ones I have plugged in!
Seems kind of silly... I think I have to stick with SM5Preview 4 then, since it still recognizes my controller and I can play with no problems on it other than the occasional Stepmania lag.
If anyone plays Stepmania using DDR pads, definitely explain how you got it to work with Stepmania 5 Beta 4a! Thanks.

Are you using any Windows OS?

Yup! Windows 7 64bit Home Premium on a ASUS G73JH Gaming Laptop. It's not super new but still has i7 and ATi HD5870 so there's no problems there. Also 6GB RAM too. I just can't get this new Stepmania 5 to recognize the USB port like my older Stepmania 5 build :/

Did you see anything displayed in Test Input Screen when you press anything from your USB pad?

This post on the stepmania.com forums seemed so similar I thought you were the same person.

If you're not the same person, maybe you could try the same thing, using a powered USB hub instead of the USB ports you have been trying.
One thing I'm wondering is if you're running the old preview 4 build and the new beta 4 build on the same computer when you're saying one works and the other doesn't.

Yup I tried that fix and sadly it didn't work. It was cool that the USB Hub still worked with Preview 4 though.
And I don't see any inputs coming in on the Beta 4a build when I step on my pads @razorblade so I'm not sure why it isn't recognizing the USB controllers.
Also wondering, is it a problem that both builds are on the same computer? I have my old build, SM5 Preview 4 on the desktop in a folder while the new one is in the regular "Game" folder in the C: directory. I've done this multiple times when upgrading since way back in 3.9 days, then 3.95/3.9+ etc. didn't seem to have any problems til now :/
What I don't understand is why with every method I've tried, I just can't seem to get Stepmania 5 Beta 4a to recognize anything other than a Mouse and Keyboard when I go to the config menu.
In my Preview 4 build, once I disconnect, it will say "EMS2USB Joy1 and 2 disconnected" or something along the lines of that. It also tells me when I plug them back in too, so it clearly knows the controllers are there.
Beta 4a doesn't seem to do that so it's pretty frustrating. I don't know how to dig into the code since I only have small experiences in Scheme, Python, and MatLAB from school so I don't know how to find the source of how the program is going to recognize or detect controllers at the USB ports.
Edit: Oh and yeah I did post that on Stepmania haha yeah that's me! I forgot my name here on ZIV is pretty old, I usually go by WhiteCharisma on everything nowadays and didn't even realize that wasn't my name on these boards too!

Hm, dbelin was the one I was referring to when I asked if you were the same person.
Running multiple builds on one computer is just fine, they shouldn't interfere with each other. (much, both versions of SM5 might be reading their prefs from the same location, but that's probably not the problem here)
It's possible that your pads are ones that the devs had too little info on when updating the input code to DirectX 9, and that's why they aren't being recognized anymore.
I'm on Linux, and don't normally go near the input code, so there's nothing I can do to fix it.
