I have 2 questions about Beat Gather:
1: How exactly does the game keep track of custom beats made by people?
2: Is there something like a grid for the editor?

It has a database that lets you search for a song, iirc. If someone uploaded a chart for your song it will appear there.
The editor is kinda like using "record mode" in StepMania. The song plays and you tap along to it. I think you can go back and tweak it after. I never made any charts.
The app is free, you could have just downloaded it and checked it out yourself.
