Eurovision 2014

Well, I'll be

Since Emmelie de Forest won hosting rights for Denmark in last year's contest, Eurovision 2014 will be held in Copenhagen next week. There are 37 countries participating this year, and the official Eurovision YT channel is again curating entries:

＊　Semi-Final 2 (May 8th)
＊　Grand Final (May 10th)


I'm not as blown away by this year's crop, but there are a few I do enjoy:
Hungary (soft spot for D'n'B, not sorry)
France (too catchy!)
Armenia (could be my #1 if it had better structure)
UK
Iceland (cheesy but fun)
Switzerland (because I am so wet and dirty)

Meh, of course Poland had to fuck up. First time we had decent song (that I even considered simming at one point) but no. Let's use English version of the song which has absolutely no power, is bland and the text is pretty much flattened. The parody theme of the song is really hard to translate into English and I think that they failed miserably...

As far as I know, they will use a bilingual version.

Speaking of screwing up, Sweden was SO close to do it as well (*cough* Ace Wilder *cough*), not to mention that our best choice didn't even make it to the finals!

Anyway, this year there are three countries I'm rooting for, and they are Hungary, Norway and Finland.

This was my #1 choice for Germany <3 But Elazia is ok too I suppose

This might be the first semi I'm not pissed off at.

Who got in:
Armenia (dubstep-ballad, no wonder it's one of the big favourites)
Sweden (obviously. Can't really say I like it, but...)
Iceland (pop-punk, I actually love this, not lying)
Russia (there were boos)
Azerbaijan (ballad, probably bought *satire klaxon*)
Ukraine (nice enough pop, if they didn't get in Moscow would have just been on fire)
San Marino (about DAMN time. Shame it wasn't the 2013 song which was imo better, but still, nice)
Netherlands (shocked about this one. I REALLY like this one too, it's not your usual ESC fare)
Montenegro (ethno-ballad, first Montenegro finals appearance, not really memorable)
Hungary (drum and bass, oooh yush. It got in, and that restores my faith in Europe)

Latvia, Estonia, Albania, Belgium, Moldova and Portugal got the boot. It's amazing how the Moldova album cut was brilliant, but live...oh Jesus no.

I agree that this is a semi in which I was happy with the results:

Montenegro (First time for them, and they deserved it)
Hungary (Yes!!!)
Russia (Ooooh, the crowd did NOT like that)
Armenia (And that was expected)
Azerbaijan (That too)
San Marino (That was NOT what I expected! Though it's the first time for them as well, so I'm happy for them)
Ukraine (Expected, even though I didn't like it that much...)
Sweden (YES!!! (Yeah, I feel like I want to root for my home country a bit at times))
Netherlands (Wow, it DID make it.)
Iceland (With its message, it deserved it. Though I didn't expect it would reach as far as it did in the beginning.)

Considering how BRILLIANT San Marino 2013 was, maybe their inclusion in this year is a bit of a sympathy vote?

Also regarding the Russia / Ukraine thing. They both could send anything and get through. Even if one country hates them, there's a lot more that don't.

I believe so too. This might be an example of a phenomenon I've noticed in recent years, when an artist participates with a good song, and doesn't really make the grade, and then they come back the year after or so with a song that doesn't really hold up to its predecessor and succeeds, as some sort of sympathy for the last time's failure.

Examples being:
Dima Bilan (Russia). Second place in Eurovision 2006. Won in 2008.
Trackshittaz (Austria). Came second in the national preselection 2011. Then they win in 2012.

Maybe also Eric Saade in 2010/11? If Manboy got through (and it SHOULD have, it was brilliant), maybe there wouldn't have been the semi elimination you guys had.

Wow...this semi was a shock to me

Montenegro (About time they made it in, they were robbed last year)
Hungary (One of my favorites this year, I can see this winning)
Russia (Who didnt see this coming but LOL them getting booed)
Armenia (Saw this coming, but he didnt pulled it off that well live imo nerves maybe?)
Azerbaijan (ofcourse)
San Marino (Woah...go Valentina <3 Now why didnt they qualify last year but this year they did?)
Ukraine (Expected)
Sweden (Saw this coming haha)
Netherlands (Wow I thought I was the only one who liked this song o.o)
Iceland (Haha never under estimate Iceland )

Kinda shocked to see Estonia not qualifying this year, I had it under my dark horse winner

I can see that for the final

I think it might be a show down between Slovenia, Switzerland & FYR Macedonia for the last spot. I do fear about Poland since I think juries had gave it a low ranking like they did with Montenegro in 2013 Also I can see a shock about Romania not making it in since their rehearsals been getting some negative reviews :x

Slovenia (Also quite unexpected)
Poland (Well, Europe seemed to like Slavic Girls)
Romania (One of the favorites, though I'm sure it won't win)
Norway (Another favorite through, and also one of my personal favorites as well)
Greece (The floorfiller and third favorite through)
Malta (This kind of music seems to have its charm)
Belarus (Gross...)
Finland (Of course, what would a Eurovision final be without the rock song?)

Switzerland (I like this one, whistling and a violin solo that has FUCKING 32NDS IN at 190bpm)
Slovenia (some nice poppy thing with flute and bilingual bonus lyrics)
Poland (Soulja Boy but Polish and with tits)
Romania (It's not as good as Playing With Fire but I really do like it, so yay, piano trance!)
Norway (ballad that I suspect will be lost on the night)
Greece (of course. Electro-swing lite which is basically the mash up of We No Speak Americano and Party Rock Anthem but better than both)
Malta (I love this one, a really nice bit of pop-folk)
Belarus (It's being billed as Robin Thicke 2.0 but if anything the lyrics spell nearly the opposite. I shouldn't like it but I do anyway so meh)
Finland (I really like this, it's Lostprophets without the rapey singer and they're actually the age they SHOULD be)
Austria (AS IF this wasn't gonna get in!)

What didn't:
Israel (surprised, I thought people loved this sort of thing)
Georgia (light folk pop-rock that nobody really remembered so...yeah)
Lithuania (urban RnB downtempo deriviative thingy with someone who can't really sing, bye)
Ireland (nice pop song, shame Ireland can't make the party but at least they didn't sell out with Jedward)
Macedonia (another good dance track let down by a singer who can't really do good)

Malta (Feel good song, Malta found its way to pick good songs now)

Finland (Completes all the Nordic countries being in the final)
Austria (I knew they were saving this for last, another dark horse?)

I'm real shocked Israel and Ireland got knocked out, if you replaced Belarus with Israel I would be ok.

Also no Baltic countries in the final this year (like how there was no ex yugoslav countries last year)
