Now, I know what you can do with the PSX memory card slots on DDR machines, that's pretty well covered, but I can't really find information on what the controller ports right underneath them do. I heard from some they can be used for debugging or using your own pad (should the official ones fail?) and others that it can be used to edit the edit data on the memory cards.

I tried googling it but I couldn't get any information really.

They do nothing. They are actually blocked off with plastic so you couldn't plug anything into them anyways. The PCB literally only supports reading and writing data to/from the memory cards.

The ports don't do anything on DDR. They do however work on some versions of Guitar Freaks. The PCB supports a WHOLE lot more than reading and writing the memory cards. Trust me on that.

I stand corrected. But they do nothing on DDR. GuitarFreaks... I would have no idea. I have a GuitarFreaks cabinet with the slots but I think the controller ports are blocked off.

edit: They are blocked, just as they are on a DDR machine.

A lot of GF's have their ports stolen from a DDR. The DDR ones became more common when DDR X came out and the upgrade kit mandated the replacement of the front panel.

That said the board underneath all this mess is an incredibly powerful piece of equipment for what Konami tasks it with. It was designed as a fairly universal I/O board for all manner of interesting things, but Konami ended up only using a small portion of it's capabilities. In reality the thing wasn't "designed" to read and write PS1 memory cards, it was designed to be a very powerful, extendable JVS I/O board, that happened to be extended to read and write PS1 memory cards. Konami even fucked up by not providing the high voltage line on the PS1 memory card connector. This is why most 3rd party cards (Which nearly all rely on the 7.5v line) don't work. The board also has some ports I haven't figured out yet, and what appears to be a standard Konami 15pin player connector (See The Simpsons, all Konami GX games) but those things aren't populated. They would've been gangbusters for the satellite terminal 573 games of the day, giving a player a way to save data (PS1 memcard) and a controller port all in one I/O board, cutting costs. I just think Konami never got around to doing it.
