Hi all!

New member and first time posted here and I have a question for everyone Smile I know this is possible to do as I've been told by Jousway (partial Stepmania coder / noteskin and theme maker) that it is, but I can't seem to contact him to ask how... I have been playing games like Stepmania and FFR (Flash Flash Revolution) now for a while, and recently (well, two years or so) Thirdstyle, which is a newer and very similar game. Thirdstyle has a very long play field, so the arrows are on-screen much longer than FFR or SM (for example, I use C675 on Stepmania and have trouble reading C700, whereas on Thirdstyle I can use 850-900 or so). It helps a lot in fast passages as with 850-900 I can read the patterns easier than C675 of course. The problem is switching back to Stepmania! I can go and play the same song in Stepmania but not be able to read it at all and failing because the arrows are too smushed together, and if I speed up my mod to spread them out, the arrows are too fast!

SO! That being said, my question is: Does anyone know how to extend the playfield in Stepmania? I have checked all the options (and yes, I've tried just enlarging the game, but that just stretches and scales everything in the game so that doesn't work) and I've found elsewhere that it has something to do with the code. I know it would probably involve making the arrows and receptors a tiny bit smaller, and I'm fine with that, probably wouldn't be a huge difference anyway :p

Thank you all for reading and for your consideration, and even if you don't know the answer I'm still happy to be here and make my first thread. My name is Sam Smile

P.S. I genuinely apologize if the thread has been made or the answer is somewhere, I really did search for it and still can't find it! If it's out there, I'd be extremely grateful if anyone could direct me there. Smile Or if you know anyone who might know how to do this, it'd be great if you could pass the thread onto them too. :p

What theme are you using?

Many themes have "mini" modifiers, which may accomplish what you're looking for. It effectively makes the arrows smaller. If this is not what you're looking for, or if it makes the arrows too small, respond here, and I can try to help you more.

I am using the default theme for Stepmania v5.0 alpha 3, and that isn't what I'm looking for :p in essence, I am looking into how to extend the length/height of the playfield. Imagine there was a solid block from the bottom of the screen to where the center of the receptors are (from where the arrows enter the screen to where you hit them) I wish to extend it longer. If I make my entire SM window larger, of course that playfield will be longer but it will retain the same aspect ratio. Stretching the SM window in any way just stretches everything, trying to maintain the same pixel relationships etc. Now "mini" does actually work for what I'm looking for, but usually "mini" keeps the receptors the same distance apart horizontally and makes it hard to read xD (I also wouldn't want that arrows to be THAT small)... it is difficult to explain exactly what I'm looking for but if you play Stepmania often, if you compared it to Thirdstyle yourself it would be easier to comprehend what I'm trying to do.

I'm... not really comprehending what you mean. You want to make the playfield longer? The only solutions I can think of are:

mini: makes the receptor arrows smaller, increasing the height/width ratio of the playfield; mini actually does not keep the "horizontal distance" the same, unlike your description of it...

changing the metrics: you could change your metrics to move the Y position of the receptor arrows up higher, but this would also cause them to overlap on other elements of the UI. You could then also move other UI elements around, but that starts to get messy.

My best recommendation is to use mini. If the default mini modifier makes the arrows too small, let me know, I'll try to write up instructions on how to modify that.

Also, you should definitely upgrade to SM5 beta2a ASAP: http://www.stepmania.com/wiki/Downloads
Alpha3 is 1.5 years old by now and no longer supported. A lot of bugs have been fixed since then. Smile

EDIT: Can you post a screenshot of Thirdstyle? I'm completely unfamiliar with it and what you're trying to achieve in SM5.

I see now, after a test (which I should have done initially after your suggestion) that mini does not keep the same distance horizontally. The game that did that was FFR (Flash Flash Revolution) and earlier versions of SM, whereas this one doesn't. So that DOES help, actually a lot, but the downside is that you were also correct in assuming that the arrows a bit too small :p

Also, I would love to post a picture of Thirdstyle but the game is unfortunately not loading for me at the moment. It can be found at thirdstyle.com/play and will probably have a very far off off-set if you go to play it for the first time. I find that it's as smooth as SM, but online benefits like chats/forums/website are good (hopefully multiplayer one day too lol). Thank you for your help and instructions, if you could find a way to modify the mini that would be extraordinary!

P.S. after downloading the SM5 beta2a installer, it's naturally asking me to uninstall my current version of SM5. Will my songs transfer over if I do, and if not, what would you say the easiest way to transfer a LARGE amount of songs/files/packs over to the new version is? Smile

EDIT: Thank you very much for all of your help. I have looked through the metrics a bit and figured out how to make the mini effect a little bit bigger, and I have not tried it yet but I am sure I can work through things enough anyway. This will improve my scores immensely, I appreciate it a ton Smile

Hi, I have read all your post (I notice that DBK2 has helped you), but... when you gonna install a newer version of SM you have to unistall the current version BUT it doesnt delete you the Songs Folder and the folder where are saved your profile.

Which OS do u have btw??

Even, you can have more than 1 SM5 Installed... I prefer the method of Create a additional folder outside the Stepmania Folder for my Songs (like the image), you can add aditionals folders... On my Stepmania Folder I dont have songs, all my songs are on a separated folder.

RED Folder - That is the Stepmania Folder
Black Folder - My Songs folder.

Hello! So I have moved my Songs folder to another location before making the final uninstall / install of alpha 3 and beta2 respectively. Everything is up and go with all of my songs etc, but thank you very much for offering to help and the picture as well Smile

Edit: HOWEVER! After updating to SM5 beta 2a, things run very choppy. I am on the same resolution and coloring I've been using for Alpha 3 (800x600 windowed and 16-bit instead of 32-bit for pretty much everything), and nothing has really changed besides the version; and I tend to lag a lot. There are no major skips or stops, but the game overall is very choppy and sometimes if I hit perfectly on sync (audio has been calibrated) my hit won't register until maybe 20-30ms later, and I will receive greats/goods that I shouldn't be getting from the lag... I have also tried openg1,d3d switching, but my computer does not run at all on d3d so openg1 is the way to go. Alpha 3 ran very smooth and I noticed no bugs at all from the editor to options to gameplay, so I might just switch back to that if I don't get a solution for the lag fix :p let me know if anyone has had this problem and fixed it xD
