I created a simfile the other day, and I noticed that there were no ingame banners/backgrounds/etc. so I looked in the song's folder to look at the .sm file. It was blank. I looked back into the game and I think the problem is that Stepmania 5 is sort of "trapping" my simfiles in the .exe itself. Is there any way to export the .sm file so I can erase the folder and start again? (Export Packages in the Edit menu doesn't work either, by the way. Not like that'd help considering the .sm file is blank, though.)

Actually sounds like SM5 is saving your data somewhere else than you are expecting it to.
If I'm not mistaken the most common cause of this behaviour is when you install SM5 in Program Files.
If you happen to have it installed there, simply move the whole SM5 folder somewhere else, your personal folders for example.
After that it -should- be saving your files as you expect it to, outputting the changes directly in your StepMania 5/Songs folders.
I can assure you the .exe is never changed.

Or you can make a new song folder and add the simfiles there.
That's the lazy way to fix this...

Installing StepMania in your program files is one of the worst things you can do, nowadays, especially if you have a version of Windows that's higher than XP.

I suggest you install SM5 to any location in your data drive and make a shortcut link of the exe to your desktop.
