First post here but I thought you guys might know something about this.

I will be off to Tokyo in January and I'm looking forward to playing DDRX3.
Last time I was there I noticed the DDR machines had USB slots. I did a bit of research and found a guide for making edit charts for X2.
But I'm not sure if it works on X3. I was really hoping I'd be able to make some custom stepcharts for DDR songs because I prefer ITG style.
Either that or I will have to find an X2 machine somewhere

"."
Well, if you find X2, do note that you still won't be able to make edits since they took down the site that made it possible to do that.

DDR X3 (and by extension, X2) has stopped existing in Japan, I'm 99.9% sure all you can find is DDR2013.

That said though, you can still make edits.
The procedure differs between Japanese/Asian versions and American/Europe versions. For American/Europe versions, you need that website but they took it down. (So Aegis, that only applies to American/Europe versions)
For Japanese/Asian versions, it might be complicated. First, you need the Japanese CS game that has the song you want to edit. You make that edit and export it through the library manager (doesn't need to be done for PS1 games). Then, you need DDR X CS JP (must be Japanese version). Go to DDR X's edit mode (after exporting), then go to "Outside Manager". You'll see edits that you have exported there. From there, you can import it to DDR X's edit library (which, per library, may contain up to 30 edits). Finally, after you compiled up to 30 edits in one library, you have to export to USB. For this you need a USB thumbdrive (duh), I forgot whether it requires FAT/NTFS or not (also it doesn't have to be that big). After you've done that, a folder called "DDR_EDIT" will appear in there, and inside you'll have "DDR_EDIT_J.DAT". No need to tinker with that, all you have to do is bring that to the arcade and plug that in the USB slot when the game requires you.

For songs appearing in DDR X CS JP, you don't need to go through the exporting part, but for PS2 DDR games (they have to be Japanese versions), you need to export them. For PS1 DDR games, you need to copy the edit data from a PS1 memory card to a PS2 memory card through PS2's memory card manager. Then they will appear in the Outside Manager.

Previously on X2, it was possible to create edits for songs not in PS1/PS2 CS games such as will or any song debuting in X2. Early in X3's life, it was possible to do so for X3 songs but after a certain patch, the machine will not load any song that isn't supposed to have edits in the first place because they aren't in any PS1/PS2 DDR game (there are exceptions though, such as AFRONOVA (X-Special), for some reason).

Finally, there is a software that allows you to skip the "owning Japanese versions of old games" part. It's rather complicated to use though, requiring you to create the edit in StepMania (adhering to the 4th/8th/16th/12th limit etc), converting it to BMS (or some other format, can't remember), loading it into the software, making sure it aligns with the song perfectly, exporting it as a PS1 save file, putting those save files into a PS1 memory card, copying them to PS2 memory card and finally loading them in DDR X CS JP's Outside Manager.

Ok Thanks so much for your help Silverhawke, I just have a couple more questions, and sorry if they are really stupid questions.

Is DDR X CS the PS3 version of DDR and does it have any other names (I'm just having a bit of trouble googling it)
Will I encounter any problems using the Japanese version of the game on a PAL PS3?
How many songs are on DDR X CS that I can edit?
finally... will the edits work on DDR 2013? or only on DDR X3?

Thanks again Big Grin

DDR X CS is the one for PS2, which is I think the last Japanese PS2 DDR game.

The edits work for all versions accepting USB thumbdrives, which is all versions X and above.

I don't know about doing it on PS3, I have never done that. As far as I know, you'll need the PS2, and the fat one on that if you're planning on using the software/editing songs on the PS1 games. Otherwise you're fine with slim PS2.

For the songs available on each game, just consult this site's game database.

bah! too much effort for such little return. I guess I'll just look forward to playing DDR 2013 and hope that there are some good songs on there.
If only they had ITG in Japan, if only...

I heard there is an upgrade cab in Japan somewhere, but I don't have any more info than that Sad
