I've always referred to them as follows:
Beginner
Basic
Difficult
Expert
Challenge
Purely because I only started playing shortly before X3 was released, and that was on an SN1 cab. Even now, I only play SN2. It's just what I'm used to

In the sense that whenever I use the old terminology, I often try to correct myself afterward.

I don't think
has ever been labeled Normal, on Mario Mix it is called Hard.
is called Standard on some European mixes, and
has never been called Oni (That's just the literal translation of the kanji in the symbol) or S-Maniac (The misnomer that formed from 4thMIX PLUS replacing some Maniac charts with harder charts and keeping the original charts as Edit charts called Maniac-S on Single, and Maniac-D on Double). But
is called SuperManiac on DancingStage featuring DREAMS COME TRUE. That said...
I just go with the current name set; Beginner/Basic/Difficult/Expert/Challenge. Though I find myself still using the MAX~EXTREME names; Beginner/Light/Standard/Heavy/Challenge.

For me its
Beginner Mode
Light Mode
Standard Mode
Heavy Mode
Oni Challenge
yep I'm strict on the Max-Extreme naming though for me
is interchangeable for Oni or Challenge
I wouldn't count the difficulties for Mario Mix as they were not on par with the normal difficulties of the main DDR series. Super Hard is not equivelent
, but it is more equivelent to

I've always used Light, Standard, Heavy, and Challenge because that's what I've grown up on and everything else just seems weird. Also when I say "Expert" I'm talking about ITG Expert 99% of the time.

My favorite mistranslation was players at the first western DDRMAX 2 location referring to the new Nonstop mode as "Hell Mode", not because it had anything to do with demons, but because they had to play through 5 identical-sounding Paranoia songs, in a row, on 1x speed for 8 hours, in order to unlock all the songs on the machine.

But for a long time (because of Dancing Stage EuroMIX 1+2) our Standard was your Light/Basic, sp everything was very confusing.

Isn't it called Oni in the DDR EXTREME modifier selection menu?
This is true.

It is, probably because that's the only word that would fit in the space left between Heavy and the end of the screen.

It's a technicality though, right up there with the 6thMIX announcer calling the difficulties Roku/Yo/Geki (sic?). Everywhere else, it's called Challenge.
