"now led_light for short" |
I ask this in part because: a) I don't see many people in the forums who talk (or care?) about any charts that are below
, even though they're part of the game, and b) freestyling seems to be something that's now neglected but is still a part of DDR culture nevertheless. [It's still surviving in Japan, at least.] I don't care how you define "freestyling" (whether it be simply looking away from the screen or *gasp!* actual dancing) as long as you are having fun while not (necessarily) trying to get a high score. If you don't freestyle, why?
Here's my first (though pretty lame) attempt at freestyling, though I hope to improve on this once I get the opportunity.
Other songs I want to freestyle to if I get the chance (partial list):
-smooooch・∀・
(and apparently S-
, too)
-女々しくて
[These first two are pretty obvious.]
-Programmed Universe D-
-Kung Fu Fighting D-
or
-PARANOiA D-
I guess this also shows that you don't need edits in order to freestyle. If you're creative enough, you can probably freestyle on almost any official chart!

The most I can do is some small leg cross tricks and a pretty fun trick I stole from the end of the below video.
If it's not clear enough, that is not me.
I have been memorizing the chart to Dynamite Rave B4 ZA Beat Mix so I can though. Free styling is a tough thing to start.

I do. I freestyle Super Eurobeat (parapara routine) and She is My wife (video routine). I haven't pulled out Eternity in a while since the crowd doesn't appear to be enjoying it and Ez Do Dance is in the doghouse since it's so bad it's embarrassing.
I used to do these dances as warmups, but I am frankly tired of doing these songs on freestyle anymore, but when a crowd gathers on an X2 machine, I can't help but bust out at least She is My Wife. I have also done the dance for Memeshikute, but I had to do it on one of my last free days in the Philippines (I was hoping for a proper DDR farewell event but I missed that window), I did it only once so there was no second chances (I got a crowd gathering though and some appluaded
), and I did on a stepmania machine (there are no X3 cabs there).
For freestyling as a whole, I'd like to keep on doing these from time to time, but I'm not much of a choreographer and I seriously have to think of routines for songs that aren't exclusive to the latest DDR version.

I would try, but if I did, then I'd fail a song because the pads suck.
Missing notes + Pad faults = Bad.

Thats why I usually freestyle on PIU. And I use the term "freestyle" loosely but hey, it can be just as fun as massive 16th streams and crossovers if you're confident you don't look retarded

Freestyle isn't my thing, but they can be entertaining to watch. Since I'm pretty much a PA player, the most you'll see me do is mess around with spins when I'm not in the mood for playing for score.
I'd try get into freestyle or something, but I'm definitely not creative. At all. So I'll stick with PA

I do a mix of both. You'd be amazed at how much spin/showoff potential some
charts have.

I remember creating some awkward freestyle routine for Jet World
on DDR Extreme around six years ago. But I never tried it in the arcade.

The closest thing I do to freestyling is playing Saturn
without double-stepping; unfortunately, it makes me dizzy half-way through! Plus, haven't exactly memorized the steps enough to do well on it.

I don't freestyle, but I like to move around a bit. I can really only spin on back/forth jumps and a a half spin on Love Shine. I like having fun trying to dance on the easier charts.
I kinda hope it's entertaining enough in an arcade for new people to think it's a fun game and not serious gamer business. Although I'd imagine most people look at me n00b-styling and think "lolol remove those arrows and you look stupid" but whatever. When I first started out, some dude was trying to dance all cool on Cartoon Heroes light or standard or something... my sister thought it was lame, but I liked him.

Wow, I should try that song again soon. I totally forgot about those spins.

Doing the spins properly, not really. Actually trying to dance, yes.

I agree, this "serious gamer business" is only a part of the game. Actually, the "fun" aspect should the most important part of the game, isn't it?

"Oh god what I have dooooone?!" |
I tried learning to spin, but at $2 a game and with so many misses = fail, I play to try and get my money's worth. I somehow feel that if I fail or don't play songs that make me sweat, it's wasteful.
Hell as it is I don't play nearly as much as I used to, because I'm experiencing quite serious money issues as of late. Plus uni.

Here is some video of freestyle competition in my country. The competition was a few days ago ^^. (the first one is me, lol)

Granted that freestyling is not that widely practiced nowadays though, but it's still fun!
APPEND: I'm unable to embed more than one video on a post. I wonder why...

Fixed. Good to see that other parts of Asia do it too! I wish there were still competitions here in the US (competitive or freestyle) . . .

If anything to try to add a freestyling element (or to just look drunk, whatever you'd like to call it), then try to hop on one foot and spin like mad on that one foot during the DOWNDOWNDOWNDOWNDOWNDOWNDOWNDOWNDOWN part in Orion (Ameuro Mix)
... Makes me really dizzy, but I feel that it accomplishes the freestyle part in a session if I ever play (never).

Given that our community is really small, I am willing to call anybody who is willing to spin, alt-step or otherwise be flashy as a freestyler. There's really no point to being asinine about the requirements because the tournament scene is dead here. You don't have to like someone's stuff, but you don't have to take any steps toward being alienating either.
As a player, I'm in between entry level freestyle and routine worthy. I pick energetic songs, use my arms, try some silly ground-work whenever I can get away with it. Overall though, I try to match the flavor of the music in some shape or form, and that's really what counts in the end. Surprisingly enough, it took practice just to get used to using the space in between arrows in a basic chart, alt-stepping and general disorientation issues. A couple years on-and-off before it became fun as opposed to debilitating.
I feel like I'm one of the last of my breed, but it's nice to know that no matter where I go, the likelihood that I'll run into someone that rocks out as hard as I do on Super Driver is pretty much nil. It also helps that I don't pick anything smooth, haha.

Freestyling becomes pretty fun in the Hottest Party series with hand markers turned on, since you actually have to move your hands.
This is most fun on HP2, because you get extra points on every beat as well as on the actual markers. Also they're fairly sensitive, so you can get away with virtually any motion. I personally find moving like a conductor's baton pretty fun.
