"now led_light for short" |
Expanding on this thread, what made you interested in any Bemani game (IIDX, pop'n, etc.) in the first place? Did the huge popularity of DDR lead you to the other games? Or which Bemani game did you start with?
I got into IIDX, jubeat, and pop'n music thanks to my study abroad in Japan two months back (I wouldn't have been able to play these games otherwise). Many of the crossover songs helped me pique my interest, but then I got into some of the KOs and other songs unique to those games as well. Since my visit was short, I still have yet to play anything else, but I am interested in DanceEvolution and GF/DM too.

"Gimme a mothaf----n' break!" |
DDR was the first BEMANI game I ever heard of and played which obviously led me to finding out more about the BEMANI scene.
If I remember correctly, DDRMAX was the first main sign for me that other BEMANI games existed after I looked in the information about PARANOiA MAX ~Dirty Mix~ (CLUB ANOTHER VER. 2) when I unlocked it. It said something about beatmaniaIIDX and I was like "what the hell is that?" I briefly was trying to find out what it was but at the time I wasn't getting enough clear info about it, so I gave up for a bit. Then the other PS2 DDR games kept being released with the same "Information" selection and would again list something from the beatmania series and pop'n music. I was getting more curious as I was realizing that some of these songs I love on DDR actually came from somewhere else. I found out more information and eventually got to fully realize what beatmania/IIDX was. For a while, I never got to see it in action but I was finding out about the different styles and the song titles, which intrigued me because of some of the strange wording. Eventually I finally got to see how IIDX was played back when bemanistyle.com had a video section. The first gameplay I saw was the HYPER chart of rottel-da-sun on 6th style CS. I was amazed. I had never seen anything like it and I thought it was the coolest thing, but was upset that mainly Japan had it. Since then my interest in the whole beatmania series continued to grow and even though it is still primarily in Japan and I rarely ever get a chance to play it, it's currently the one BEMANI franchise that I follow religiously. And when I finally got my chance to play on an actual IIDX machine (DistorteD), I felt that my life was filled with cool.
For pop'n music, I pretty much had the same experience. When I found out about 8 on the Break and how they had a pop'n music game in there, I was excited to finally try it out. However, it doesn't have an effect on me like IIDX does. I definitely like the game and the style of it, but the music and gameplay of the beatmania series was always better to me. To this day I follow pop'n music every now and then.
As for the others, they don't interest me as much since I've never played them (except for GuitarFreaks 11thMIX/drummania 10thMIX and KEYBOARDMANIA 3rdMIX, but still not very meaningful to me), but whenever there is a new BEMANI release, whether it be a next installment in an existing franchise or a brand new game, I'm always eager to at least see what it is.

In order:
I don't exactly remember how I got into jubeat/jukebeat, but it was sometime last summer, when I first got my iPad. For a while I only played those 6 default songs on them both, until much later, around the time jubeat plus' celebratory sale, when I bought several with a Japanese iTunes gift card.
I got interested in REFLEC BEAT after playing Telperion's War Games simfile for Elisha (which I originally downloaded because some speed gimmicks were mentioned, and I like those). I really loved the song, so I looked it up on YouTube and found this video:
It was fascinating to me, so I waited for REFLEC BEAT plus to come out on the App Store, as this was a little while after it was officially announced. When it was finally released, I downloaded it right away, and I've been playing it almost daily ever since.
For years, I have heard some IIDX songs (originally from DDR or some simfile pack), and watched them being played on Youtube sometimes, kind of passively noticing the existence of IIDX/beatmania. But it wasn't until around spring 2012 that I realized that I actually wanted to play a rhythm game that's key-sounded. So I looked for ways to play IIDX on my computer, and eventually ended up with a StepMania 5 + DJ TROOPERS theme setup. I started by only downloading songs I was familiar with through DDR, jubeat, and REFLEC BEAT, or simfiles again. Even later, I started to be more interested in the soundtracks, which got me to download more BMS files.
I got into pop'n music the day I found out there was a Timezone arcade out in Auckland with Sengoku Retsuden. The first few times I played, however, I only played songs I was already familar with, but I'm starting to play more unfamiliar stuff I noticed through similar artists or music styles, just like with IIDX.

DDR 1st Mix was my first Bemani game. I remember it because the background for PARANOiA freaked me out so much I couldn't get past the first half of the song
But then 2nd Mix came out, and I loved the music so much (more than the game, to be honest), so I started following the series. My favorite mix would still be a tie between 2nd and 3rd Mix, since it brings back so many memories and the epileptic BG's back then were full of win.
And then I heard of Beatmania when I was at an arcade. Got into it, found some music, and everything else was history.

Haha, I had no idea that Elisha simfile had such repercussions!~
Like most people did, I think, I started with DDR~ SN2 AC to be exact. I didn't care much for the Konami original tunes at first, but once I was able to play some of the higher level stuff I really started to enjoy the variety. After seeing that I was interested in the music, a friend at college lent me his beatmania US and I passed all the level 2 charts it had, lol. I was still pretty n00bish at the timing aspect and didn't enjoy the gameplay back then.
It wasn't until I got my hands on a copy of SM and found out that IIDX had a LOT of songs in it that I started to branch out, though. And it was primarily in order of the music I liked most from playing simfiles - Raison d'etre from IIDX17 arguably got me into IIDX music (if not the game); cross-referencing Zektbach and finding Kagachi brought me to pop'n soundtracks circa Sengoku Retsuden; Nekomata Master's discography led me to jubeat; and I was around for the first release of REFLEC BEAT so by that time I was already watching closely to see what'd be on it haha. Simfiles are also what got me into Technika music, and by extension, Technika
PIU's probably the only rhythm game besides DDR I got into originally for the gameplay.
I didn't get a chance to play most of the non-DDR Bemani games until I studied abroad in Japan last year, and that was when I touched jubeat and pop'n for the first time. Now that I'm close enough to a pop'n machine to play regularly, I think overall (music + gameplay) pop'n is the most fun experience for me at the moment
