aka beware stepmania extreme
this is an accurate simulation of ddr extreme arcade, based on stepmania, which is unpack and run (everything included. songs, bg videos, etc). it is a 650 MB download. This is also worth considering for anyone who
wants/needs an instant, good looking, dance game/simulation, with minimal hassle.
this is the beta version of r3. i ask for feedback.
file: beware_stepmania_extreme_r3_beta1.zip
size: 673803371
SHA1: a694edf2b114eb1acb2f1137f6f283ad5c62eb72
SHA256: 0c879cc5ad1ed18f6a8aaf0b623f963590ed9c00fa636bb863a0c5fb511bd303
direct download url:
https://ddr.bircd.org/beware_stepmania_extreme_r3_beta1.zip
unpack the zip into a new directory, without another stepmania installation, it works on its own.
new in r3:
- all of the cumulative updates for r2 (bug fixes, debounce patch, etc)
- re-encoded all songs from the lossless sources with ogg aotuv beta 6.03
- found and fixed a stepchart error in 3 more songs
- improved syncing of songs (fixed a number of sync problems)
- bg videos are disc ripped
- verified and fixed all bg scripts for accuracy
- verified and fixed song preview starting points
- course wheel entry card images
- improvements to theme accuracy, including more patches
- random bemani and random dancemania nonstop courses
- linux support. it should be easy to get working on most current setups.
- the special ending
every aspect of the game/simulation has been patched/modified/themed with attention to many details, simulating behavior SM cannot normally do.
some screenshots to give an impression:
FAQ: make sure of these before asking support questions:
- be sure the initial zip was unpacked with preservation of subdirectories? you should see subdirs such as Songs, RandomMovies
- this simulation is not intended to be used as part of another stepmania install. it is a full self contained setup. install it in a new directory on its own.
- if the framerate is low/laggy during gameplay, try to disable vsync to see if that fixes it. also try to disable background videos.

I believe this might be more fitting in the Simulation forums.

Anyways, keep up the good work with this project.

Man I love this simulation... oh yeah and disregard what I said a year ago about it being detected as malware, it was a false positive. Keep up the good work (if you're still working on things )

Quality thread. Thank you, beware, for continuing to work on this.

Thanks for all the hard work. It plays EXTREME just like in the good ol' days, proper background movies and all. So how exactly do you access all 240 songs in the game?

ok if an admin/mod thinks this thread better fits in another category, please feel free to move it.
press left+right simultaneously to access all songs. just like on the real thing

the source code patches are included, so if SM 3.9 can run on a mac, you could make a mac build with SM 3.9 and the patches. also to cater to unix-like platforms (including OS X) i include a shell script in addition to a batch file for the update procedure.

Sorry for the possible necro, but really, what is the difference between using this, and Stepmania with a DDR Extreme theme? Can this accept custom simfiles?
This does look incredible...
EDIT: Never mind about the first part. I just had to read the thread more xD But can it still accept custom sims?

This build is pretty much an exact replica of the DDR Extreme AC and yes it can still accept custom simfiles.

o:
Beware, you are my biggest hero.
I have been searching and searching for ways to make Stepmania behave as close to DDR Extreme AC as possible.
And you bring this upon me.
You have officially restored my faith in humanity.
Which reminds me: would using this count when submitting scores to Zenius? xD

Hm, technically it's still Stepmania, so IMO it won't count.
I unknowingly AAAed some song under this, and submitted it. I'm still looking forward to reAAAing those songs on a real EXTREME.

no I played that in Galeria Mall, Yogyakarta. I was suspicious, because it was very cheap (about 1200 IDR/credit), on widescreen monitor and other behavior (like allowing second player to join in the middle on a player's credit, ala PIU).

The thing you'll download there includes its own Stepmania installation.
For this to work, beware modified the source code of SM3.9.
And he'll need to modify SM5's source code to simulate it.
It worked perfectly on SM3.9 though, so I don't see why he should port it to SM5.

as for if scores count as being extreme: IMO, no. this is not the real thing.
i think it *could*, perhaps, count, if a simulation has known to be exact timing behavior and everything (or, if you were to run a perfect MAME emulation), and do so in a real cabinet. but the timings are an educated guess. in addition to simply having judge window timing values, another issue is alignment to framerate etc - say the real thing polls 60 times per sec but stepmania may measure more precisely, so it's different.
the PSM unlock is not implemented. but you can always choose PSM.

After using it for awhile, it's extremely nice, but there are some luxuries I had in Stepmania that I wish I had in this. All in all, I think I'm going to stick to using this, but I just have a few questions.
1. Is there any way I can view groups by default?
2. In Stepmania, groups showed banners in the same manner that songs do. Is there any way I could enable this?
3. If a song's preview plays, and you switch groups, the last song continues to play. Can I disable this and have the menu song play instead?
I know no one wants to help a noob... but thanks a ton for at least reading what I had posted. :p
Thanks for the DDR Extreme simulator, btw. It's amazing!
