So today I found a DDR Extreme machine with the best pads I've ever encountered in my life at a local theater. The only two problems with it were that the unlock codes weren't enabled and the screen is slightly discolored. While looking up the unlock codes (I intend to shake down the maintenance guy and make him unlock the songs), I noticed there was a Degauss button mentioned.

What's the exact procedure for degaussing the screen?

To degauss the screen:

Get the maintenance guy to open up the coin slot door. If this is a Japanese machine, the inside should look like this:

(shamelessly lifted from the DDR Freak Arcade Machine FAQ -- it's too late right now to get a pic of my own machine)

The first two red buttons (from the top) are to get to the Test and Service buttons, resp., and the third is degauss. Pressing it will degauss the screen.

If the inside is in Korean...I'm afraid I can't help, since neither of the two buttons are degauss.

Hope this helps!

If your monitor doesn't have a degauss built in, you may have to use a degaussing ring.

Okay, so it's just a matter of pushing the button on a Japanese machine? There's no other procedure that has to be gone through first?

Oh, and is there any surefire way to tell whether it's a Japanese or overseas machine before opening it up?

Yeah, as far as I know you just have to push the button Smile If there's something else that has to be done, I've been doing it wrong myself.

As for knowing whether it's a Japanese machine or not...so far all I found was a post talking about differences in coin slot appearance. I'm not sure if that's a legit thing to go off of (it claimed Korean machines have one coin slot, which may be true, but mine has one coin slot and is indeed a Japanese cabinet). I'm searching for a thread somewhere that might discuss the differences between the two cabinet styles as we speak.

Scratch that, here's an image of what they're talking about:

(taken from some thread on aij)

If the coin doors don't look like that, odds are it's a Japanese cab.
