Need Help with Themes for Stepmania

You guys probably get this a lot, I need help installing the DDR Themes to my stepmania. Which stepmania do I have to download and what do I have to do? thank you XD

It depends on which version of StepMania you have. A lot of arcade-like themes are for 3.9, but there are also a couple for 4.0 and 5, though they're a bit rarer. It depends on what you want in a theme if I'm recommending which one to download. If you want themes that are truer to the games (pre-X2 cover flow, that is), go with 3.9; if you like more ITG-style step gimmicks like rolls or lifts, go with 4.0; and if you like X2's interface, what with the cover flow and all, go with 5.

As for where to get themes, I know I get mine from StepmaniaThings, but I'm sure there are a lot of other themes that aren't on there--I know I found an X2 CS one and a working EXTREME one that weren't on that site, so you could always Google it. Personally, if you get StepMania 5, I'd wait until STARLIGHT comes out--developed by a few ZIv members, even!--but that isn't happening very soon, as coding is only at around 3%. For 4.0, dubaiOne is nice, and there's a LOT out there for 3.9, so you probably wouldn't have trouble finding one that you like.

Never go with Windows Vista StepMania 4. There's a reason why it was shuttered. Every good theme for that version has been ported on to 5. And there are multiple flavors of 3.9 that some themes will require you be using. The American DDR X2 theme required 3.9+, for example.

I can tell you what themes I recommend, and which StepMania you need to play them on:

Takuya's EXTREME (download) - requires 3.9 final (download)

foonmix 2 (download) - requires 3.9 final

Takuya's SuperNOVA (download) - requires 3.9 final

DDR X2 (American) - requires 3.9+ (download theme + stepmania)

In The Groove 3 (download) - requires OpenITG beta 2 (custom fork of StepMania 3.95) (download)

ultralight (download) - requires StepMania 5 (download)

beware's EXTREME - requires custom build of 3.9 (download theme + stepmania + simfiles)
- This is a recreation of the entire EXTREME arcade game. It's possible to add your own simfiles to it, but it requires some doing.

Most of Takuya's stuff is offline now, he also has a really good DDR X theme. His last update on Facebook says that final releases of Takuya EXTREME and DDR X will be out soon but no indication of exactly when... or where. There are other promising themes in the pipeline as well, sillybear's SuperNOVA 2, AJ's 5thMIX (a beta is out but it has shortcomings) and DDRMAX2 and Friends, and STARLIGHT (The thread is here on ZIv). All of those are going to be for StepMania 5. StepMania is free and all the official simfiles work with any version but theming is finally moving towards StepMania 5. So if you want what's down the road, get that.

Put the theme in the theme folder. Make sure there is only 1 folder containing the BGanimations, Fonts, Graphics, Languages, Numbers, Other, and/or Sounds folder. The folder structure in my Stepmania setup is:
H:\The Greatest Of Stepmania\Themes\default_3_9

yeah i was actually looking for that X theme, but i dont know which version of Stepmania is required

All of Takuya's themes to date use 3.9 final. He says that after the final release of EXTREME and X he will start theming exclusively for StepMania 5.
