It costs the US more than 1 cent to make pennies. You can't buy anything with pennies. Vending machines and parking meters don't accept them. I think the US should get rid of pennies and round everything to the nearest 5 cents.

Perhaps. It kind of defeats the purpose of having "cents" though if all prices are rounded to the nearest fifth. Maybe we should divide the dollar into 20 units instead of 100 like the cent. Of course that would involve reprinting a whole new set of coins.

I do think the US should start re-printing the 500 and 1000 dollar bill. They're convient for if you have to pay for a car in cash or something. The 5,000-100,000 would still be too extreme though.

That was a pretty terrible video.

Yes, I would want the US to abolish the penny, only so that I can exchange my copper pennies for cash :3

Well, if no one ever wanted a cent back, it wouldn't be a problem to get rid of pennies. Sure, if everything was rounded to a nickel, that'd be okay.

As of now, I'm a cheapskate so I demand all my change and will save all pennies that people don't want. Tongue In hopes that maybe they'll add up to a piece of candy by the end of the year. But a piece of candy is better than no piece of candy.

Side note: Modern day pennies actually contain very little copper. After the price of copper went up to the point where there was more than a cent worth of copper in a penny, they started making pennies out of zinc with a little bit of copper mixed in to give it the copper color.

I have loads of pennies.
They are all probably worth 10 bucks.

Give me all your pennies.

I know that. All of my collected pennies are before 1983, which was around the time they started changing the metal in pennies, if I'm not mistaken

So you haven't thought of trading it for dollar bills..?
You can.. have more money on your pocket, but it'd probably make another bulge on your pants.

It's kinda illegal to burn down pennies for the copper at the moment, so I'd rather wait.

I think the penny should be done away with. the only thing that takes pennies are coin count machines (i.e Coinstar). its kinda funny when the MSRP of any thing is always like X,XXX.99. I'm like 'seriously you can't round the damn thing up?' Time to send the penny to the grave.

"Oh god what I have dooooone?!"
the sam4e 6yNew Zealand did away with 5 cent pieces a few years ago when they redid the currency.
Our currency basically goes 10 20 50 1 dollar 2 dollars in coins, then 5 10 20 50 100 in notes.

The coins used to be pretty huge, like, a 5 cent coin was thumbnail size, 10 cent was the size of an xbox analog stick top, the 20 cent was d-pad size, and the 50 slightly larger. Dollars were thick gold 10 cent pieces, 2 dollars were closer to 20 cents but gold.
The 20's and 50's used to absolutely kill when you dropped them on your toes because they were very thick (which happened alot down here in jandal/flipflop country.

They also weren't magnetic.

We had a big debacle over dairies doing away with 5 cent lollies and such, was a major shitting point.
Also the 5 cents were the same size as australian ones. Not sure bout other coins but yea/h those are (lol cat across the keyboard) the same.

Old arcades used to be 20 cents 50 cents and a dollar for games. They were the shit.

I can't even acknowledge this as real money. It looks like something from a board game. I'm glad that 'Murrika is still strong enough to be artistic with its money, and the Lincoln one looks cool, but to me it feels like a misappropriation of resources.

All those lone pennies from $XX.99 purchases can add up to something eventually. Instead of looking at this purchase-by-purhase, look at it as a year's worth of purchases. Say you buy 1000 things @ $0.99. If that was rounded up to a dollar, you would spend $1000 vs. $990. A small difference, but a difference nonetheless. Yes, pennies (the coins) are obsolete, but a currency unit of 1 cent isn't. I think it would be best if cash purchases were rounded (so we don't have to deal with the coins) but electronic purchases stayed the way they are.

In Malaysia there is no cent (cen) piece, but prices still act as if there were. Probably because of taxes. If something comes out to 2.97RM, you only pay 2.95RM. Alternatively if it's 2.98RM you pay 3RM. Cen are rounded to the closes five, after tax. If you bought enough things that were 2.99RM you would still save something.
