So apparently, the new Wii doesn't have Gamecube ports anymore, which means I'm potentially screwed if I want DDR for it (nice job Nintendo)

Is the only option to try and find a old one?

Looks like it.
Unless konami "revolutionizes" and makes wireless pads for the wii somehow.

I agree with aegis. either Konami makes wireless pads for the wii (IIRC didn't the 360 have wireless pads?) or be stuck using the classic controller.

on a side note I thought this was going to be a discussion of the upcoming Wii U.

Also how convienient that Mario Mix wasn't listed.

I bought a black USA firmware Wii just this last October, and it has Gamecube ports.

I just didn't expect the new Wiis to come out so soon.

Maybe mine was part of the later old Wii batches.

Btw, is making USB dance pads or GC to USB adapters for the Wii feasible? I haven't heard of such a thing so far.

There is a reason they did not include the gamecube PORTS.
It i because the new wii does not run it's GAMES at all.

The problem is that plenty of Wii games also use the GC ports.

I've always been curious as to why Konami didn't make the pads just plug into the Wiimote.

The hands and feet mode wouldn't exactly work well.

True. Though they're not in the latest releases. It still doesn't make sense that they didn't just use the USB ports... which I believe the new Wiis still have.

I wonder aloud again if the PS3 pad (which -is- USB) would work on the Wii.

I don't really think that would work, but trying never did hurt.

The PS3 pad probably wouldn't work unless they added in support for it, which I am assuming they didn't because there are plenty of GameCube port pads out there.

I don't really get why Nintendo would cost-cut the GameCube ports out if there were actually games that used them almost exclusively, though. That didn't stop them from removing the GBA port on the DS, though, so who knows.

This probably means the old HP games are dead, seeing as the Wii doesn't really have a good system for installing game updates. It'd be nice if they did find some way to make their new pads work...

Backwards compatibility is a double-edged sword. You want to make people comfortable migrating to a new platform without totally alienating the last one. But these days where every console has a digital marketplace, you also want to get them off the classic platforms to have an excuse to sell them digital versions of games they may already own.

The other reason I think Nintendo dropped 'Cube support was the drive. One of the most under-spoken features on the original Wii was the slot-loading disc drive. It required a lot of work to make a slot-loading disc drive accept the undersized GameCube discs. For reference, I know of ZERO slot-loading drives for the PC that accept anything other than a full-sized disc. If you put one of those goofy business card CDs into a normal slot-loading drive... it just falls into the cavity and won't come out unless you dismantle the drive. And the drive's efforts to read whatever it is probably destroys the disc in the process.

Nintendo developed their own slot-loading drive with a double-armed disc receiver that catches GameCube discs and guides them to the center of the drive, preventing them from getting jammed. At the same time this arm knows to get out of the way if it detects a Wii disc being inserted. That probably cost them more than we realize and they're probably glad they don't have to make any more of them.

Either way, the aftermarket price of older Wiis just went up. Wink

WiiWare games use gc controllers (More than half).

Nintendo messed up a market for people who bought new wiis.

Case Closed.

This actually makes perfect sense, but removing the GC controller ports when Wii games use them does not. The ports are probably far cheaper than those drives.

It could be that Nintendo was trying to prevent people from attempting to use GC games at all, though.

They removed the GC Ports/backwards compatibility just to sell some Wiis for cheap this Christmas, period. People who waited this long to get a Wii PROBABLY had a GC before or never cared about it, and they won't even bother with wiiware when they have a decent library of actual Wii games to explore. In my honest opinion, Nintendo just wants everybody to try Skyward Sword and accept motion control as a real control alternative, since they will NOT be dropping that for their next console. People who NEED their GC compatible Wiis can still find them used for cheap, the Wii won't be Nintendo's flagship console for much longer anyways.

My Wii could've been the new one. My last console was a PSX and I intended to just use the Wii for Wiiware virtual console and DDR.

Things may have turned out differently if that happened.

Maybe they're planning a (forced) market for wireless GC controllers?

Either way, yeah. Botching a system's features is NOT the way to roll.

Actually, our local EB Games still had a good number of "old" Wii + Remote Plus bundles. And, they were $10 cheaper than the "new" ones at the other stores. This, plus that one detail, made it a better value.
