Below is a letter I am submitting to my local gym. I'd appreciate any feedback before I send it, as I may only have one shot.

Anytime Fitness,

I am not familiar with the guidelines on what equipment would be available for your gym, but I believe I know of a good addition.

A major problem for many people is finding the motivation to work out and the fun in doing it. Most have played, seen, or heard of the game "Dance Dance Revolution". In this game, people step on panels laid out in a cross pattern on the bottom of the machine. Not only is it an enjoyable game to play, but it is a great light cardio exercise and can even offer a challenging endurance workout at the harder levels of the game as it demands more frantic movements and more difficult stepping patterns. The game also offers competitive play - two can play at a time or tournaments can be arranged.

Dance Dance Revolution is a unique game. Many owners of high-traffic areas have purchased the machine when it became easily available more than 8 years ago. Because of this, many of the machines in these places today are outdated and worn. If you were to consider purchasing the game, your gym would own the only recent cabinet in Michigan. Enthusiasts would be willing to travel miles to play, and many would purchase a new membership so they would have access to it as well. I have seen hundreds of visitors on websites who would enjoy being able to play the game in their region.

The newest model, Dance Dance Revolution X2, costs about $10K - about as much as new gym equipment. It can easily be found for purchase and delivery online.

Bringing Dance Dance Revolution into your gym would provide a fun alternative to tedious treadmills and spin bikes while still offering an equally challenging workout experience. Many people would enjoy using it and it would draw new members to your gym. Please consider my suggestion.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at pia-soderstrom@live.se

Thank you.

What do you suggest that'd be easy for them to get their hands on?

Aside from a few typos, it looks good. Make sure to tell us how it turns out. Smile

Fixed - Any suggestions? Think in their shoes. Why would buying DDR benefit them and their customers?

The problem with DDR is it's incredibly expensive for what it does in terms of exercising. An arcade can afford DDR because it brings in traffic and pays for itself usually pretty fast. In a gym, which I'm assuming has fees and whatnot, the traffic just isn't there to pay for the cab, the resulting hike in the electric bill, and routine maintenance that dance games need.

Also keep in mind that none of the "casual players" even break a sweat playing DDR. Like for me I don't even get in the cardio zone unless I play something harder than an old scale 9. and I'm overweight, so that's kind of saying something

Basically, it would be a terrible investment for any gym. Not to be pessimistic or anything, but looking at it from a business perspective, $10,000+ is a lot for something you can emulate with a piece of plywood.

As of right now there is a Japanese DDR X on eBay for $8,000, the US unlock codes would work on it. There's also an ITG 2 dedicab on eBay for $7,000, you could make the inclusion of any kind of music they'd prefer (or just a boatload of it) part of the appeal.

That's true. I'm not really expecting them to put it in anyway - I just want to see what their thoughts are.

Who knows?

Also, leaving in a few minutes to submit it.

Then I guess you can walk away fine with whatever their answer is to your request.

If they are seriously gonna weigh in your suggestion, I think a USA SN2 (dedicated or updated) cab would be more likely the machine they may get (true, X2 AC does show you the calories you burned on a song without e-amuse, but I don't think the local gym would like it when somebody is tinkering with the pads frequently, or them breaking down if they won't let someone perform tweaks routinely).

Thank you so much, Lord Toon!

Turned in my suggestion. They said they'd consider it and e-mail me what they think.

They just spent $25K on new spin bikes, so they're willing to spend a bit of cash for their gym, which is good.
