Lately, I haven't seen CS DDR games have a master mode. The last one I saw was Dice Master Mode. My guess is that people didn't want these, but why? Now it just goes by DDR Points.

People had really mixed reactions to those. I personally like all of them except Street and Dice Master.
I like unlocking things simply by playing...although having the shop mode return would be cool.
Since the DDR main series is on the Wii now, I don't think we'll be seeing more Master Modes anytime soon.

Maybe if they decide to release a DDR game for PS3 or Xbox, then the master modes will come back. Stellar Master Mode was my all-time favorite along with the shop.

Technically, the Wii series did have master modes on the first 3 games. I think it was called Groove Circuit Mode on HP1 and HP2 and then it was a dance challenge mode on HP3. I don't know what they did on HP4 though.

I enjoyed those modes on Extreme US and Extreme 2, but beyond that they never had much appeal. I agree with Burtzman in saying that since the Wii is their only CS output right now, there's not much demand for it with potential buyers.

HP4 started the DDR Points trend.

But yes it would be nice to have Master Modes again, I personally loved Extreme2's Master Mode.

And I liked how they implemented a storyline in DDR X's Street Master Mode...But it felt awkward when they say they "must dance" to show how much you improved...And I find how Rage dancing to advertise for his takoyaki stand quite...humorous! XD
Oh and Disco having to face himself, ahh you gotta love Disco Puppy Face

And Dice Master Mode...Ugh...It became REALLY tedious after a while...And..."You must make a Perfect/Marvelous Combo to Pass"???
WTF Konami!! Oops

I loved Street Master Mode because I was a huge character fan. Queen-Zukin's story was my all-time favorite(especially when she and Rage fought off that octopus in Horatio). And I did enjoy Disco battling himself. It would have been interesting if they used the X2 AC characters in a story mode maybe centered around Rinon and Disco.

Dice Master Mode is fun until you have to get everyone up to level 10. I skipped a ton of the impossible trials, but I only have one character at lvl 9(Zukin). The game is really time-consuming.

Getting the characters to 10 isn't as ridiculous as like the first hour of DMM where you can only do two missions but you don't have the right dice to land on them, imo. :x
For the record, I liked Dice Master Mode and thought it was eventually awesome just with flawed missions.

Why they stopped, who knows? Maybe it just wasn't worth the effort of thinking of a new one for the last some CS releases/

I think normal play mode is now Master Mode. Especially in DDR II. You collect points, get a checklist of achievements and requirements, get preferred songs to unlock stuff faster, etc.

It's probably a lot easier to code that way than to make a whole separate mode.

I wouldn't mind the return of SHOP mode.

The CS team that made the games with the masters modes was a different team. I would like to see them return though. I really enjoyed Dance Master Mode.

I never really got to try any of these modes apart from DDR X's SMM, but because I own the Japanese version, I can't understand the story. What were the other ones like?

I'll share of my all time favorite modes of unlocking songs.

SUGOROKU DE 8 from pop'n music 8 is so much fun. Everytime you play a round of arcade mode, the game will give you a challenge. It could be anything from play a song with speed mods or full combo etc. If you meet this requirement, you'll earn a chance to spin a roulette which determines how many spaces your cute robot character will go around the map of Japan. Landing on certain cities unlocks goodies so it's a great way to open the game.

pop'n music 11 has a world tour theme and a simple travel-themed game to unlock songs. In essence you have to earn millage points by playing arcade mode. Accrue enough millage and you can pick a continent to travel to. Your stay in that continent lasts 2 or 3 arcade mode playthroughs and you'll get letters from your travels which also unlock goodies like new songs.
I don't play simulators. Only the real official games.

I presume some transferred to AC while others floated into the celestial firmament, but without some serious credits analyzing I don't know.

Don't worry, there is no story. Unless...

"Hi Rage"

"Hi Emi"

"You're shopping for takoyaki too?"

"Yeah, you wanna dance?"

"Sure, the winner is buying!"

...counts as a story.

Or my personal favorite, *Looks at PaperSak's signature*

Before Master Mode Konami revived Challenging Mode from way back on the console version of 4thMIX. It was simply a list of challenges to complete. The first Master Mode was a simple criss-crossing grid of mission linked by paths. Clearing a path in a certain direction led to a Boss mission and clearing enough missions opened new segments of the map. IMO, the best application of the mode ever. SuperNOVA turned the grid into a solar system of planets each with their own set of songs and challenges to pass. Pass enough challenges and you could play Showdowns for VIP cards that unlocked stuff in the shop. SuperNOVA 2 was simply a linear list of challenges. It's uniqueness was that you could unlock "mods" for your dancer that acted like modifiers making the challenges easier (or harder) to pass. Then there was X, and Master Mode died on the saddest note ever with X2.

Some of the dance master modes were interesting as others pointed out. If people are saying that the disc space on DDR II was filled to the brim, would you rather have Konami add a DMM and have less songs? I think most people would choose more songs over DMM.

The disc was not as filled to the brim as we were led to believe. But yeah, Songs > Gimmicky Modes.

All of the master modes were awful. I'd rather not play the game at all then unlocking shit through that mode.

The Master Modes were a fun diversion, but some of them got fairly tedious. Either you were stuck playing through ridiculously easy missions as a seasoned player, or banging your head against a wall on nigh impossible missions if you weren't in the 99th percentile of skilled players. I think Master Modes fine as long as there is a simple, alternate way to unlock all content, like simply playing enough songs.

"MAGGLE"
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dice Master Mode's tendency to crash and take with it your unsaved unlocks.
