I'm sorry if this has been asked long ago. This is such an old game that I don't believe I can find anything on this.

But when they say the timing window for the DDR games are wider than the arcades, do they mean ALL of them? Even the Japanese releases? Wouldn't this insult the Japanese players (long ago) who wanted this game at home and used it as a practice tool for the arcade and it would be easier to PA at home?

I have a tournament tomorrow (Saturday May 21st), and after practicing on ITG, I decided to play on my PS2 rather than stepmania it, which I do all the time anyways. Good idea to get ready for it? Let me know what you guys think. I feel the timing in Extreme CS JP is pretty comparable, and I play IIDX a lot too! lol

You can manually customize the judgment timing window (via editing Stepmania.ini file, not in Main Options Screen) in StepMania, to tweak your own and mimic the timing used in DDR any series AC games. So far, any 3.9 variants have no feature to set your own Global Offset Setting, only OpenITG/ITG2, SM4 and sm-ssc have it.

Awesome, but how do I find out what Global Offset to use to match, or mimic, the arcade timing, and where? I got sm-ssc.

Excellent source of information. Thank you, everyone. I really appreciate it Smile

Oh wait. Where do I change the settings in sm-ssc? And will the songs themselves be "off" if I change the timing window ms?

That's right. The timing in the CS versions is bigger then in arcade releases. Actually, there is a patch for DDR Extreme JP CS which can modify the timing so it can be like the one from the AC.

Hope this helps.

You can patch Extreme CS (and SN1 CS too!) to have arcade-like timing, but honestly, it feels a bit too harsh compared to the arcade. It's good to train your PA, but then again, your arcade scores depend largely on pad conditions rather than on how miliseconds off you usually are from the PA/MA windows.

@TsukiyoX: If you prefer to use sm-ssc, here are the steps:

- Look for your Preference.ini file (found mostly in "C:\Users\[YOUR ACTIVE USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\sm-ssc\Save", if you are a Windows OS user). Open the file with notepad, Look for the TimingWindowSeconds settings, then update the right values to the given settings. Don't forget to save your file.

TimingWindowSecondsW1=0.016667
TimingWindowSecondsW2=0.033333
TimingWindowSecondsW3=0.066667
TimingWindowSecondsW4=0.083333
TimingWindowSecondsW5=0.133333

*Note: those values are based from the frame values per judgment specified in gamefaq. These are not certainties though.

- Open sm-ssc, play regular game, select any easy song (should be any OFFICIAL DDR AC simfile/song you downloaded from z-i-v) preferably in basic to difficult charts.
- at the start of the the gameplay, press as many F6 key until the screen display "Sync Machine".
- Now play the song. MAKE SURE YOU ARE FOLLOWING THE SONG'S BEAT AS YOU STEP/PRESS THE ARROWS (no sight-reading) regardless of how many great/good/misses you got until the required number of steps is met (found in the right of the screen). This will change the Global Offset Setting automatically in game. Continue playing until you finish the song (you will eventually notice that the steps are now sync to songs as long as you step/press them correctly). After you clear the song, select yes to save your GOS setting. Finish.

OMG, razorblade, thank you so much. That helped a ton. I also like to thank CoreyBlaze and Ali Uchiha for the idea of patching my PS2 game, which should also prove helpful because it's good to practice crossovers with the Dualshock2.

The tournament passed and I won 5th place (out of 6 places) lol. There's going to be another tournament in a month, and I'll practice harder than ever Smile

Edit: Keep the Judge Difficulty at 4, right?

Im assuming you meant no way to automatically change the machine offset in stepmania 3.9 because in every version of stepmania you can change it just by editing the line in the .ini file you just have to work it out manually.

yes, it is.

Aside from that, if somebody is a really die hard fan of any 3.9 variants, you can use SM4,OpenITG or sm-ssc for audio calibration only (for setting your Global Offset setting). The value you got for GOS using the latter programs can be pasted to your GOS in StepMania.ini (in SM3.9 variants that don't have audio calibration/GOS setting option).
