"DDR-ing regularly again!~" |
So my boyfriend really wants to get good at DDR after seeing me play it several times and because post-prom takes place at an arcade in my town with an Extreme cab and he wants to be able to play with me and impress other classmates. I figured that most people can pick right up with DDR so it shouldn't be too hard. However, I've been having trouble getting him to pass stuff on Light/Basic now because he does not use both feet when playing. I try to tell him to use the right foot for mostly the right and down arrow, but all he says is that his left foot is more dominant and I can't get him to let go of that mindset and just hit arrows without thinking. I also tell him to stay off the center, but then he thinks that means stand on the back corners of the mat instead. I don't know what to do.
I also tried to show him what the Extreme cab songs will be like by playing Max 2 and he could not pass any because the colors in the background were too bright. I can't get him to just let go and be a little more flexible with the variety of DDR through the older and newer games.
Could anyone help me please?

Honestly, just have him keep practicing. We all started off doing the same things he did and we all sort of unconsciously started playing the right way after time. If the colors in the background in EXTREME are distracting, have him practice with games that have those kind of backgrounds to get him used to it. Most things pre SuperNOVA should do.

It might sound dumb, but get him on ITG. I love DDR to death, but I can't deny that I've seen way more noobs get a handle on the game through ITG due to the dimmed backgrounds, the color scheme of the arrows, and the simplified interface that helps out newbies a LOT. Also, try writing some ridiculously easy charts that involve very simple things. L D U R or U R L D patterns should be good. Maybe add a few corner jumps in there to get him used to some of those.
I used to play with only my right foot for the longest time until I read an FAQ article on DDRFreak that suggested a method to train yourself to break this habit. In the example it suggests that you FORCE yourself to play on the opposite foot you're accustomed to. So, in your BF's case, he'll stick his right foot on the Right arrow, but use his left foot to hit everything else. Do this for a few sets, then let him try playing without restrictions again. I know that for me, this method helped balance me out and break me of the one legged habit within a day. I hope it can help him out, too.
Regarding his problem with returning to the center, I have no idea what to tell you...good luck with that.
Oh yeah, I'm curious. Does he play a lot of video games? I've noticed that people who're generally considered hardcore gamers pickup the basics of DDR pretty quickly compared to people who rarely or only casually play video games.

You just remind me something. I think i did this with 1 or 2 of my ex-gf.
Make a special edit for your lover. Use a song that he likes and make it work the weakest point.
For exemple, you should make an edit for your bf with a lot of freezes, long ones.
So while his left foot is one an arrow, he MUST move his right foot to an other panel (because he will get an NG by using the left feet again).
And tell him that's it's normal to act like this at first. I think 95% of the players started this way (play on center, one foot dominant, ect).
But he should really try, he'll improve really fast.
And reward him with hugs and stuffs

I never thought of the beginner charts on ITG. Yes he plays BlazBlue, Evony, Final Fantasy, used to play WOW, and I'm not too sure what else, but he has a huge crate of video games for PS2, PS3, Wii, and Gamecube. @PanStyle I never thought about editing a chart. I could give it a shot and see if that helps.

I'd say that problem of having your feet on the center is due to Bus and Train who do this lol
Well, your bf should try ridiculously easy songs, like We Will Rock You, I pretty much started with this one. And now you can see how beast I am
EDIT: Bus and Train are the two dancing characters from Beginner Level in DDR Extreme.

ITG's beginner mode is amazing.
Playing CS games / Stepmania with 2 fingers (index and middle) is a good idea, as well, because it teaches yo to :
a) Leave your foot / finger on the key
b) Read step or two ahead, and "buffer" the patten in your mind, instead of reading it one step at a time

If there's any advice I can give, it's practice, practice, practice. Practice makes perfect. He'll eventually get out of his misguided mindset and be passing songs like a pro. Just don't give up on him.

I hope so, he only can practice once or twice a week at my house so I hope that's enough. Post #10 · Posted at 2011-04-26 03:30:20am 14.2 years ago

If all else fails, just threaten him with electric shocks until he gets better. Pain and fear can be a wonderful motivator. =D

"Not going through this again" |
I suggest to start looking into tutorial and training modes for when you start playing DDR at home. Keep practicing so that he gets used to it. Start working from the beginner and increase difficulty every time he feels confident mastering the song. This could take a while depends on the effort he put into it. Just let him do his best and guide and support him to be the very best.
There's loads more tips to explain but don't feel like writing it all out.
Just remember practice is the key to success. Good luck.

But seriously ITG Beginner is good, those Hottest Party TRAINING songs are good, the TUTORIAL mode in ITG PC is good.

Mirror the charts.
