But how can I get ZIV to email me whenever I get a PM? Because right now it doesn't and PM alerts on-site keep changing. I just want a simple "you have a message waiting".

Either send emails or alternatively format the User menu like Facebook:
Username (1) 123.4pts
The same could be extended to unread threads if you really wanted to push the boat out, which for regular users would make the email feature redundant.
